Football

The Marisr Canberra Football Club (MCFC) has finished its thirty-first football season with a sensational thirty-three reams with 435 players. Ir has been a very successful season.

Nor only do the teams strive for glory and the thrill of the win, bur they also enjoy the camaraderie of playing together with their mates, win lose or draw. The MCFC encourages this spiri t of sporrsmanship and teamwork.

So many people have made wonderful contributions to the Club. In spite of a number of challenges this year the 2009 Committee has coordinated the smooth functioning of registrations, rosters, grounds, referees, fundraising and compliance with all things necessary. There are so many behind the scenes activities handled graciously by their generous efforts. I thank you all. As representatives of the school, Suzette Thompson and Kreso Gavran have been wonderful in pitching in and doing what needs to be done. Ir was a ~rear effort.

I really appreciate the wonderful dedication of all the coaches and managers. Your efforrs nor only help the boys grow in skill and fitness bur will give them fantastic memories to carry through their lives. We also plan to conduct some 'Coach the Coaches' workshops to help you gee the drills and training ideas that could help you and your reams. Special thanks to the Year Ten and Twelve boys coaching this year.

There was a great influx of referees this year. Thank you to all rwenty-five referees this year especially the younger refs coming through. This year we had our biggest induction of First Aiders with seventeen new people. This firs in line with our aim to have a first aider for each ream.

Congratulations to Bruce McKenzie who was coach of the year while his ream Ul6/3 Royals won their third championship in a row. Our First XI also made the semi finals. UlO Red are non competitive bur went through their season undefeated.

The MARSEC hield was hotly contested this year and it went down to the final game. le went to Sr Edmund's after five consecutive years with us.

Many of our reams rook part in other tournaments. Kanga Cup fielded four reams of Marist boys: An under 15, a 14'2s and rwo under I O's. Under 12 Reds went to Young. The success of the Club should nor only be measured by winning but by the friendships and fun thar so many boys experience.

One of the decisions thar will have the biggest impact for MCFC in 2010 is our partnership with Olympic ending unexpectedly. The consequences could have spelt the end of the Premier League for MCFC. This would have been disastrous. With much due diligence and careful consideration, the Committee and the Headmaster, Rick Sidorko agreed ro align with Cooma Tigers for our Premier League reams.

Cooma Tigers share values the same as ours and I expect some great synergy. Cooma fielded some highly talented and successful teams including winning the premierships with their Women's State League 3 and their men's Scare League 1 side this year. Many of their other teams were finalists and runner up. We look forward to some valuable coaching support from the experienced Cooma coaches.

All Premier League reams will play in the same strip with the home strip being yellow and black and the away games (in the ACT) with sky blue panel and royal blue shorts and socks.

The premier League provides our players the chance to play at the highest level and offers a pathway to continue to play football after finishing school.

We had good feedback from the Chris Tanzey coaching clinics this year. For more convenience Chris Tanzey will run clinics ar Marist from 18 January. Chris will also do a 'Coach the Coaches' session early in the season.

1he annual dinner was a great succe s. The green theme was well supported and all had a good time. Fundraising went well with the chocolates and the entertainment books bringing in much needed funds. This year's online registrations system promises to save a significant amount of rime for registrars.

A special thanks to Rick Sidorko, Chris Morrissey and Matthew Egan-Richards, who have been involved and highly supportive with the many challenges the MCFC has faced this year. The College has shown great support in regards ro grounds allocation, naming and other changes by the Club.

Last bur nor least, ro all players, I hope you boys have enjoyed your season and look forward ro seeing you again next year ro continue playing the world's greatest game.
