From the Principal’s desk…
What? It’s the end of the school year already? It went by so
fast, a blur of smiles and hugs and art shows and family
gatherings and so much more. I feel so lucky to be the
principal of a truly unique neighborhood school. A place
where difference and culture is embraced and celebrated.
East Hill is a place of hope, where students from many
different backgrounds gather together in pursuit of the skills
they need to lead lives of service and fulfillment.
We need to keep that preparation for the future going in the
summer as well. We know that while summer let’s kids
relax a bit and be kids, we also know that if they don’t read,
they will fall behind in that pursuit of skill. Students can
lose up to three months of reading progress in the summer;
in three years, that means they lose an entire year of
progress. This is not OK at a place that is about constant
improvement. We are taking action this year to combat the
summer reading slide. We have identified 200 students in
grades K-3 that we want to help catch up in reading. We
have let them pick 10-12 books to read over the summer and
we will be checking in with families to support summer
reading. In addition, we are going to coordinate reading and
book checkout with lunches delivered by the Kent School
district at three sites this summer at three sites all summer.
The schedule of lunch deliveries is attached to this
newsletter. Here is the schedule for summer lunch reading,
beginning on Wednesday, June 28th:
Every Tuesday and Thursday, East Hill staff will bring
books to Valli Kee Apartments. If you live near Valee
Kee, come get lunch and books at 12:00 on these days
(free lunch is served five days a week until August 26th
,
except the 4th of July).
Every Wednesday, East Hill staff will have books
available at East Hill (11:45) and Alderbrook
Apartments 12:45).
Come read to us! We will be tracking students who take
advantage of these opportunities, they will be eligible to win
fabulous prizes on the first day back to school!

We want to wish the very best as they move on to their next
challenge. We are happy they are pursuing happiness in their
lives and careers and want them to know they will always be
part of the Blazer Bee Family.
Jennifer Yager will be teaching four th grade at Lake
Youngs next year. We will miss her energy, skill and
laughter, but are happy that she will still be serving
students in the Kent School District.
Danielle Johnson will be ser ving students in the
Snoqualmie Valley School District. Our loss
is their gain!
Emily Carberry (Williams) recently got
married and will be moving up north. We
wish her the best as she settles in to married
life.
Joy Thrall is moving back to Texas with her fiancé, she
will be coaching teachers in Dallas. I am pretending
she is not leaving.
Our Literacy Coach, Julia Hyres is heading south to the
Parkland School District to teach struggling readers.
She will be great at this!
Shree Coorg, a longtime paraeducator at East Hill is
retiring to pursue her art and teaching others to sing.
Students and staff will miss her tremendous positive
attitude.
Alan Lain will be star ting work on an advance degree.
We will miss his kindness and warm smile.
Claudia Johnson left us midyear , we wish her happiness
and hope she will return to visit
Our Health Tech, Tatyana Rawat has a new job. While only
here a short time, Tania has done a fabulous job. She
will be successful at whatever she does.
Tamra Himmelman filled in for Ms. Lesko and quickly
became part of the family. She is off to her next adven-
ture, hopefully flying a lot!
Thank you to our amazing PTA, to our awesome Art
Docents, and to our cool Choir, Soccer and Track
Coaches. You help to
make our school a wonderful
place to learn and play.
