Getting rid of those energy hogs

A 20 year old refrigerator or freezer consumes up to 1,400 kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually while an ENERGY STAR labeled model consumes between 400 to 500 kWh annually.

The environmental benefit of recycling 25,000 refrigerators is equal to removing 50,000 cars from the road for a year.

Recycling 25,000 refrigerators will result in 75,000 pounds of aluminum that could yield nearly 2.1 million aluminum cans.

In-home pick up of old, inefficient second refrigerators and freezers (up to 2 per household).

Rebates for $30 per unit, not to exceed 2 units per household.

The units must be at the service address. All units must be between 10 and 30 cubic feet, using inside measurements. The units cannot be the primary refrigerator and must be clean, empty and in working order at the time of pick-up. They must be accessible, with a clear path for removal by JACO Environmental.

Seeing and feeling the difference

Upgrading your windows could help you save on your cooling bills by reducing the solar heat gain coefficient (SGHC) in your home.

In colder climates, a window with a low U-factor will reduce the “ghost draft” effect and increase your comfort.

Automatic or setback thermostats can help you save as much 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills by turning back your thermostat 10% to 15% for 8 hours.

National Grid electric heating/cooling customers and gas heating customers.

Cash rebates of $10 per ENERGY STAR replacement window with a U-Factor of .35 or lower, with a maximum rebate of $500 (50 windows). The windows may be self-installed or installed by a qualified contractor.

Cash rebates of $25 per ENERGY STAR rated or 7-day programmable thermostats, up to 2 per service account. The thermostats must be self-installed.

Submit a completed rebate form along with a dated copy of the sales invoice or receipt. The complete model number of each unit installed and the cost of each unit installed must be clearly listed on the invoice or receipt. A copy of the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) label for each window installed is required.

Burning dollars makes no sense

Old forced-air furnaces operate at very low efficiencies, sending 30% or more of their energy dollars up the furnace flue, and in doing so, each has pumped up to 4 tons of carbon dioxide, the “greenhouse gas,” into the atmosphere every month.

Upgrading a boiler from 56% to 90% efficiency in an average cold-climate house will save 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year if you heat with gas, or 2.5 tons if you heat with oil.

Customers must obtain a rebate reservation for their anticipated rebate incentive at: www.powerofaction.com/efficiency. Customers and contractors can view how much funding is available for this program on the rebate reservation webpage. Rebate offers are subject to change without notice and the program may be suspended or terminated due to funding constraints at anytime. After receiving your rebate reservation, you MUST complete a rebate application and mail it in with a copy of your dated ITEMIZED invoice. Equipment must be installed and rebate applications with all required documents submitted within 60 days from the date of the reservation.

Bundling up to stay warm

The EPA estimates that homeowners can typically save up to 20% of heating and cooling costs (or up to 10% of total energy costs) by air sealing their homes and adding insulation.

It is estimated that you could save about $600 per year by boosting the amount of attic insulation from R-11 to R-49.

An average home loses up to 30% of its heating and cooling energy through air leaks.

Enhanced Home Sealing Incentives Program (EHSIP)

National Grid Residential natural gas heating service or active electric heating service homeowners who reside in 1 – 4 unit dwellings.

EHSIP offers eligible customers a site visit to the home for a cost of $50. A participating Building Performance Institute (BPI) accredited contractor will conduct a Comprehensive Home Assessment (CHA). This will include a health and safety check, a blower-door test to identify air leakage in the home and up to two hours of basic air sealing. At the conclusion of the assessment, the customer will receive a report detailing prioritized recommendations for energy efficiency improvements.

Incentives of up to 50% of the total cost for attic insulation as identified in the CHA and deemed eligible by energy efficiency standards in the NYS Tech Manual. The incentive total is not to exceed $3,000.

Getting the most outof Multi-family

Insulating hot water pipes reduces heat loss and can raise water temperature 2ºF–4ºF hotter than un-insulated pipes.

CFLs use about 75% less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and lasts up to 10 times longer.

Low-Flow fixtures can achieve water savings of 25%–60%.

Energy Wise Multi-family Energy Efficiency Program

National Grid Residential Metered Buildings with 5 - 50 units.

The Energy Wise Program provides incentives for installation of building envelope measures such as insulation, sealing attic ventilation, ductwork and air infiltration testing, lighting and refrigerator replacements. In addition, participants may be eligible for incentives for measures under other National Grid energy efficiency programs.

Eligible Measures: Free energy evaluation to assess energy usage and increase energy efficiency.

Free installation of up to ten compact fluorescent bulbs per dwelling unit.

Incentives up to $300 towards refrigerator replacement costs.

Free installation of low flow showerheads, aerators, hot water pipe and tank wrap.

Incentive for air sealing and insulation for gas customers.
