Environment on Call, the council’s bulky waste collectors, will no longer collect large amounts of waste/furniture etc from the building. Due to cuts, each household may only receive two collections a year (3 items per collection). If you have any furniture etc please do not leave the items outside the building near the back gate or dump it within the compound for others to deal with. It is now the responsibility of the householder to remove the items themselves. If you do not have transport to do this you can call Environment on Call on
0161 954 9000. Remember you only get to do this twice a year! At the moment Jo and Fiona are trying to come to an arrangement with the council to pick up from the building more regularly but with no success so far. Please do not leave anything outside unless you have arranged pick up with the council yourself. Please leave your Olat number and a note on any goods you leave.

January is perhaps one of the most unforgiving months. The sensory overload of Christmas has faded and winter is leJ stark and naked. On some mornings dawn fades into dusk without the day ever seeming to really begin. The concept of leaving the house in short sleeves or feeling the need to slap on a bit of factor 15 seems very alien. Life in those countries blessed with la0tudes that border the equator becomes par0cularly appealing. Cypress can offer you 7 hours of sunshine a day during winter, Lanzarote will feel like a hot English summer and in the Maldives you can swim in warm ocean waters under a blazing 80 degree sun. Succulent agaves thrust their sharp spears into the crisp light, rubber plants grow into giants that shame our house bound specimens, and bourgenvillia and campsis are in bloom all year round. But, you see, that is the problem. It’s the same. All year round. Plants living in these sun drenched climes can lazily bask in their sandy soil, casually throwing up the odd new leaf here and there. Whereas their more hardy rela0ves, whose family history is based in the more temperate zones of northern Europe, Asia and the Americas, have had to adapt to the fact that the weather can change drama0cally throughout the year. And this is what brings a constant cycle of drama and excitement to our gardens, parks and surrounding countryside. The unveiling of new growth in spring, the explosion of colour that follows in summer, the warm tones of autumn, and the bare bones of winter give our calendar a richness and vitality. So now, in the leanest and coldest of 0mes, we know that this is simply the calm before the storm. It is the 0me to an0cipate and dream. There is tension out there, quietened roots are gathering energy, dormant buds are smug with hidden treasure and slender twigs slyly fool us with their dry lifeless forms. Lick your lips while spring builds flavour, cooking away slowly and silently. At Hulme Community Garden Centre we have a selec0on of plants that are brave enough to keep their clothes on all winter. Sarcocca and osmanthus take advantage of the fact that nothing else is in bloom, and reveal 0ny sweetly scented blooms that will provide a winter feast for late flying insects. Euphorbias add leafy structure to winter pots and gardens and euonymous ‘Emerald and Gold’ infuse its bright leaves with an added shot of pink. Cu\ngs we took in late summer and autumn are gathering strength, and late sowings of claytonia and mustard greens will provide fresh salad over winter. Pots of bulbs and divided perennials will soon be pushing up the soil as they raise their heads to welcome the new year. January may be quiet, but the silence is decep0ve. We have everything to look forward too.
My daughter Jazmine is studying Music and Media at high school and was approached by a producer from Dragon Fly TV asking if she would like to take part in a documentary about living in Moston. Jazmine desperate to know more about television produc0on begged me to allow her to take part. This seemed like a great opportunity for Jazmine especially as she was recording her first rap song and I agreed. The director was really interested in Jazmine’s experiences of racism growing up in North Manchester, what it was like growing up on an estate like ours, the good and the bad and she was happy to tell her story. Jazmine has some previous experience of ac0ng on camera and seems like a natural at it, I however have had no previous experience and dreading seeing myself on TV! My other daughter J’anaie was also a licle reluctant to appear on TV but is now looking forward to seeing herself. I just hope the filming that made the final edit gives an accurate window into our world. The filming took place at various loca0ons, our home, Jazmine’s school, recording studio and at HFC. Thank you for allowing filming to take place at HFC. The documentary will be shown on BBC3 some0me in January 2013 for 6 hour long episodes and our story is episode 6. As far as I know it will be called People Like Us.
