BACK TO BAHRAIN

DUQM

New Orleans traveled back to Manama, Bahrain, from February 1st to the 5th. While most of the crew toured the city or spent time at Naval Support Activity Bahrain, the remaining crew went and played with children at a local school.

On short notice, New Orleans changed course and headed to Duqm, Oman. NOL would be the second ship to ever spend a port visit there. While there, the crew took advantage of the port call and relaxed at local hotels and racked up over $26,000 worth of Pizza Hut pizza.

Kuwait Exercises

On another short notice change due to weather, New Orleans turned away from her original plan of spending a few days in Hong Kong and sped onto Manila, Philippines, for a two-day visit. While in port, New Orleans had local celebrity reporter Ces Drilon come onboard to tour the ship and visit her son, HM2 Mikhail Drilon. The rest of the crew explored the capital city of Manila. This marked the last port call for New Orleans before the quick stop in Pearl Harbor.

New Orleans anchored off the coast of Kuwait for four days as the 13th MEU and Sailors from ACU 5 offloaded its vehicles for the end of deployment washdown. Other Marines conducted dive qualifications with Sailors from ACU 1.

After leaving Manila, New Orleans cruised up to South Korea, where Marines from 13th MEU participated in Ssang Yong 2014, an annual combined exercise with the Republic of Korea.

As New Orleans arrived in Pearl Harbor much of the crew were glued to their phones. This was the final stop before we closed the books on this Western Pacifc deployment and returned home to San Diego.
