The Big Apple Greeter Guide toJackson Heights

Where is Jackson Heights?Located in northwestern Queens, Jackson Heights stretches north from Roosevelt Avenue to Astoria Boulevard, and east from the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway to Junction Boulevard.

About Jackson HeightsThe area now called Jackson Heights consisted originally of farmland and open fields. In 1909, the Queensboro Bridge connected Queens to 59th Street in Manhattan; this was followed shortly by real estate speculation. The Queensboro Corporation, led by Edward A. MacDougall, wanted to avoid the dirt and congestion often found in tenement-style urban housing. MacDougall was inspired by the British Garden City movement. Wanting Jackson Heights to be a city within the city, he set the buildings back from the lot lines and planted lawns. He carefully planned the main commercial district along 37th Avenue, donated land for churches, and built tennis courts and a golf course. Many of the cooperative apartments are detached buildings surrounding private interior gardens; this innovative design creates many corner apartments, maximizing light and air. With convenient transportation and good housing, Jackson Heights has always been a stable residential neighborhood.

It’s Easy to Get to Jackson Heightsby subway: 7 train to 74 Street-Broadway or 82 Street

at Roosevelt Avenue. E, F, M or R trains to Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue. by bus: Bus lines that service Jackson Heights include the Q32, Q33, Q45, Q47, Q49 and Q53.

If you arrive by way of the 74th street subwaystation, be sure to notice the trapezoidal-shaped windows layered with a plasma composite material which breaks up the light into the colors of the spectrum. The artist, Tom Patti, has said he was influenced by the markets, flowers and colors on the nearby streets. To learn more, see the website at www.nycsubway.org/perl/artwork_show?126.

In 1924, Queensboro Corporation began construction of a number of private english garden homes called “convertibles.” Their outward appearance is of a one-family structure; the addition of an interior door and staircase meant that the upstairs could be a separate rental. To avoid repetition, the houses were built in groups of two to five, with variation in roofing and entrances. These English Garden homes are on 70th through 73rd Streets between Northern Boulevard and 34th Avenue; on 83rd through 85th Streets between 34th and 35th Avenues; and on 86th through 88th Streets between 34th and 37th Avenues.
