Rabbinically Yours There is an age-old joke about a congregation that decided it was time to engage a new rabbi. There were many different suggestions that were made, everything from a younger rabbi to a more experi-enced rabbi. Some wanted a friendlier rabbi;
some wanted a more scholarly individual. Some wanted a more pastoral indi-vidual and some wanted someone who would simply be there. In the end the board of directors created a committee to interview other congregations to find out how they were going to go through the same experience. Congregations decided that instead of the placement service sending out rabbis to interview, they would simply exchange one rabbi for another in a rotation. Everyone agreed that such a system might work. That is until one president made a very interesting comment. She said, be careful what you might wish for in the rotation and the rabbi you get…if you wish too hard, you may get your own rabbi back. Congregation Beth El has been fortunate to have wonderful rabbis during its long history. I remember meeting Rabbi Astor at a Rabbinical Assembly convention at the Concord Hotel when I was first starting out in the rabbinate. That was thirty-seven years ago. Many of my friends today remind me that they interned with Rabbi Astor when they were in rabbinical school and ac-quired many great skills and some great advice from him. A member of my previous congregation recently shared with me that her uncle was the rabbi here in New London many years before Rabbi Astor. For the past seven years, Congregation Beth El was fortunate to have Rabbi Rachel Safman as our rabbinic leader. We all wish her well in her new pulpit in Ithaca, NY. As I sit down and begin to think about “be careful, you may get your own rabbi back,” I am thinking in terms of the strengths of each of your rabbis, how we can build upon not only their strengths, but also what the valuable gems they each gave our congregation. It’s not be careful, you may get your rabbi back! It is how to build upon their successes and the challenges they faced. I write this note, a week prior to beginning anew, as your rabbi. I turn to G-d and pray that through the lessons of Torah and the values it has inspired through the years, that I be privileged to receive the blessing of wisdom of Solomon; the ways of Moses in leadership; the ability of Aaron to bring shalom, peace, between people and in the community; and Abraham’s love of G-d, love of people and the ability to know how to use the Jewish way and Jewish values to be there for you in the different situations of simcha, chal-lenge and simply life in general.

The Beth El Bulletin
Our Mission Statement: The mission of Congregation Beth El is to foster a welcoming, diverse, and egalitarian community within the framework of Conservative Judaism, and to enrich the lives of its members through worship, learning, fellowship, celebration and tikun olam—healing the world.
Dear Congregants, To say that we are in unchartered territory with respect to the COVID-19 pan-demic is an understatement. In the last few months, Conservative Jews have done the unthinkable – celebrated minyanim and Shabbat services over Zoom. No recent generation has faced a pandemic of Biblical proportions, and the Conservative movement has been quick to respond by figuring out how to maintain synagogue life without gathering in-person and while still maintaining our Conservative Jewish values. This is a rare opportunity for a creative and innovative approach to services on Zoom. Would you like to replace parts of the Shabbat morning service with a Torah discussion that engages everyone attending? Would you like the service enhanced by more frequent guest musicians? Would you like to try an outdoor service? How about an outside Torah discussion rather than a service? Be-cause this is truly unchartered territory, we have the ability to experiment and to tailor our Shabbat services to the particular sensibilities and needs of our congregation. If you haven’t yet joined a Shabbat Zoom service, please do so as soon as possible and give us your thoughts. Rabbi Kideckel welcomes your feedback, so please be honest and constructive. This is your shul and everyone’s opinion counts! As you know, Rabbi Earl Kideckel will be joining us as our rabbi on July 1st, and we’ll be formally wel-coming him on July 10th and 11th. Please make every effort to attend on July 10th and 11th, and if you are around during the holiday weekend, we’d love to have you join us for services July 3rd and 4th. At the Annual Meeting, I quoted the following words of Rabbi Sacks: “Optimism and hope are not the same. Optimism is the belief that the world is changing for the better; hope is the belief that, togeth-er, we can make the world better. Optimism is a passive virtue, hope an active one. It needs no cour-age to be an optimist, but it takes a great deal of courage to hope.” For the next year, I’d like this thought to be our watchword. Given all of the uncertainty in the world and in our community, it is vital that we have the courage to hope and to actively bring about the changes that are needed to make sure that the Beth El communi-ty survives this pandemic. We truly do need your faith and hope in the Beth El community. As a first step, I ask all of you to begin this journey of hope and active involvement to bring about change by taking a fresh look at services

in the time of COVID-19. With your input, we can create the kind of Zoom services that you will want to attend every Shabbat. Please email Rabbi Kideckel at [email protected] or me at [email protected] (or call me at 213-505-6756) with your ideas – what type of a Zoom Shabbat experience would make you want to attend every Shabbat service? Stay safe!

Tammuz –Av 5780
I pray that G-d guide us all in our new chapter of Congregation Beth El to appreciate each other, to listen to one another and to inspire not only ourselves, but others in what makes our congregation a pillar in our community and in Jewish life in New London. And then, we might get what we all wished for. I would like to express my appreciation to all of you who have already made our congregation so special to me. One special todah rabbah to Kathleen McFadden, our president, who has spent countless hours inspiring me and guiding me through the months of preparation for this moment. I look forward to our future together. Rabbinically yours,
