But these are not normaltimes. For many American Jews the current era is a period of profound uncertainty. We are experiencing a visceral fear of a sort that has not been commonplace in our community for many decades. Fatal attacks on Jewish religious gatherings in Pittsburgh, Poway and Mon- sey and uncoordinated assaults on identifiably Jewish individuals in the streets of New York (not to mention widespread instances of anti-Semitic graffiti, arson attempts and desecration of Jewish cemeteries) have left Americas Jews feeling exposed and vulnerable. Some have even expressed fears that if the Democratic presidential nominee is Jewish, it could unleash a surge of anti-Semitic violence. In this climate, we cannot help but read the megillah through a different lens. The tale of a besieged Jewish minority, drawing on their relations to the corridors of power to ensure their safety, resonates with us in a way that it has not for generations. It is not a farce, it is our lived reality – or at least a means of understanding our contemporary experience. So, what lessons can we draw from Esthers reluctant heroism? From Mor- dechais insistence on staying true to his values and identity? From the Sagesdecision to commemorate this incident in perpetuity? Clearly one of the enduring messages of Esther – reified by scholars based in Eretz Yisrael – was that Jewish existence in the Diaspora was not only possible but, at some level, desirable. After all, the Land of Israel lay within the one hundred twenty-seven provinces over which King Ahashveros ruled, meaning that less Esthers intervention, the Jews of Israel would have been targeted for annihilation. This, of course, does not mean that Jewsexistence as a minority will always be comfortable and safe. Indeed, this has been the rare exception in Esthers day and our own. We are thankful for the intervals when our Jewish status does not present a barrier to full integration into the larger society, but when faced with a choice between relinquishing – or trying to hide our identity – From the desk ofRabbi Rachel Safman March 2020 Adar-Nisan 5780 Continued on page 4

A Dark Comedy

The Purim story reads like a burlesque comedy: an effete king is manipulated by a dysfunctional court to turn the power of the throne against an imagined enemy only to discover that the people targeted in-cludes his personal savior. The story ends, as does every good comedy, with the downfall of the plot’s instigator, the villain Haman, and his sons. Reading

this tale in “normal” times, we wonder – as did our early Sages – why this farce warranted inclusion in the Biblical canon. What message of enduring worth could such a superficial tale convey? But these are not “normal” times. For many American Jews the current era is a period of profound uncertainty. Fatal attacks on Jewish religious gatherings in Pittsburgh, Poway and Mon-sey and uncoordinated assaults on identifiably Jewish individuals in the streets of New York (not to mention widespread instances of anti-Semitic graffiti, arson attempts and desecration of Jewish cemeteries) have left America’s Jews feeling exposed and vulnerable. So, what lessons can we draw from Esther’s reluctant heroism? The Beth El Bulletin

Our Mission Statement: The mission of Congregation Beth El is to foster a welcoming, diverse, and egalitarian community within the framework of Conservative Judaism, and to enrich the lives of its members through worship, learning, fellowship, celebration and tikun olam—healing the world.

Dear Congregation Beth El, February was another busy month for the leadership of Congregation Beth El. The High Holiday Cantor Search Committee, chaired by Sandy Greenhouse, along with Diane Maran, Elyse Landesberg, Sue Miller, and Rabbi Earl Kideck-el, reviewed audio files from a number of candidates. I am pleased to report that Cantor Sanford Cohn, who is retiring from The Emanuel Synagogue in West Hartford this year, has agreed to serve as our High Holiday Hazzan. Cantor Cohn, who has been a mentor and friend to Cantor Michael Zoosman, has an absolutely beautiful voice. We look forward to having Cantor Cohn enrich our high holiday services this coming fall. In additional cantorial news, Cantor Michelle Rubenstein has decided to pursue a full-time position rather than renew her part time contract with Beth El. We will miss her and her lovely voice and wish her the best at her next pulpit. I am in the process of forming a Cantorial Intern Search Committee, which Sandy Greenhouse has once again agreed to chair. You may have heard the good news that Solomon Schechter Academy (SSA) will continue to operate through the 2020-2021 school year, which means that BE’s move is delayed until the fall of 2021. That is because TE’s very busy Religious School requires all seven of its existing classrooms. The newly cre-ated chapel will potentially be used as a classroom for the students who are preparing for b’nai mitz-vah, but that still leaves TE with one less classroom than is needed for its Religious School. TE’s plan has always been to convert the SSA principal’s office into a classroom to make up the shortfall. Since that can’t be done while SSA is still in the building, we’ll need to wait until the fall of 2021 in order to move to TE. I have already advised Crossroads Church that we will be extending our lease for another year. As you are witnessing, transparency and democracy can be both messy and time-consuming, and I apologize for that! As always, feel free to email me at [email protected]. Happy Purim! Kathleen McFadden

versus fighting for our rights (openly) as Jews, we are always on our strongest footing when we opt for the latter. Finally, our history and traditions are empowering. Even – perhaps, especially – when confronting challenges that are new to us in our generation, we should remember that we are the scions of a people whose resilience stretches back to Biblical times. We can and should model our responses after those of our ancestors, building strong alliances (and calling upon them strategically), standing united in the face of a common threat, and remaining resolute in our commitment to our core values and goals even in those moments when it may be tempting to yield or hide. The story of Purim reminds us that history unfolds in cycles and we await the day when we can again blithely laugh at its machinations. Hoping to see everyone at our communal Purim celebration, on the evening of Monday, March 9 at

Temple Emanu-El.

This Committee was amazing. They understood the urgency involved in bringing Rabbi Kideckel to Congregation Beth El as soon as possible and moving quickly to make him an offer once we realized that he is an excellent match for Congregation Beth El. Many thanks to all of the Committee members on moving quick-ly to achieve this fantastic outcome! And a special thank you to Artie and Barbara Dean, for opening up their home to Committee members and Board members on Sunday, January 5th so that they could get to know Rabbi Kideckel in a more relaxed and informal setting.

DO YOU KNOW WHO KNOWS WHAT YOU BUY, WHERE YOU GO AND WHO YOU MEET? Join friends and Ben Wizner at a private home for dinner, a talk and a provocative discussion on April 26 at 4:30 p.m.

Ben Wizner who heads the ACLU’s Project on Speech, Privacy and Technology, works at the intersection of civil liberties and national security. This is where your right to privacy collides with the government’s need to know and both battle with commercial interests.

PARALLEL UNIVERSES: THE TWO SIDES OF THE SURVEILLANCE DEBATE

Mr. Wizner has written that “In the first universe, the U.S. intelligence community operates in a framework so regulated and constrained that it should be the envy of the world, not the target of its scorn. No intelli-gence agency in the world can match our respect for rules and laws.

In the second universe, the U.S. surveillance community has outgrown legal restraints and allowed its sur-veillance activities to be driven by technological capabilities. It developed and deployed a global system of mass surveillance without the knowledge or consent of the public and it is sitting on massive databases of private information that constitute a genuine threat to free societies”.

Is it possible that both of these pictures are largely accurate? Find the answer at:

Mr. Wizner’s public lecture April 26, 7:30 PM. The Weller Center at Mitchell College

Beth El Book Club - Wednesday, March 18, 8:00 p.m. Be Strong and of Good Courage, by Dennis Ross

Dear Congregants, Next month we're doing something unusual. Rabbi Safman suggested the book Be Strong and of Good Courage by Dennis Ross. ("For more than 12 years, Ambassador Ross...was point man on the peace process in both the George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton administrations." Washington Institute web site) It discusses Israel's founding leaders and contrasts their challenges with Israel's current challenges. Ross is understandably worried re some of the issues on Israel's current political scene. Since we won't have Rabbi Safman’s suggestions for many more meetings, the current members chose to read the book, even though, because of its newness, we can't get it on interlibrary loan. We decided we'd read it electronically. The electronic version is less than $20, ie, less than we'd spend going out for dinner. If you sign up on Amazon for a trial of Audible, you can get it for free. Another option is to borrow an e-reader from a friend who's finished the book or you can buy the hard copy. Even though people have been hesitant to do so, consider coming to the meeting even if you have-n't read the book. Those who've read it will be discussing its main points and you can get a sense of the club and join in the discussion. All in the SE Connecticut community are welcome. Any thoughts/questions, call me at 860-235-9569. Regards, Dan Bendor

Blanket Making Continues

Nancy Brand, Harriet Juli and Ruth Radin are continuing to make lovey blankets (small 14 x 14 with satin tabs) for children hospitalized at L&M Hospital and for adults in area nursing homes.

Any monetary donations would be appreciated to help cover the cost of materials would be appreciated.

Kindly send, or bring, donations to the Beth El office (P.O. Box 1310, N.L., CT 06320).

Thanks in advance for your support and generosity!

The Blanket Brigade,

Harriet Juli, Nancy Brand & Ruth Radin

A heartfelt recommendation from Stuart & Sue Miller:

For approximately the last two years, Sue and I have been attending the JFEC/TVCCA senior kosher lunches on Mondays, at Temple Emanu-El. The requested dona-tion for the meal is $3.00 and raffle tickets for small prizes are sold. Almost each week there is a speaker or activity after the meal. A good time is had by all and we encourage other Beth El members to make a reservation at the JFEC and check out this nice way to meet and be with people. The best part is that the food is prepared by Dona and/or Ken Casey!

Join us on our next build date!

Sunday, March 8th, at 12:30 p.m. Build site @ 122 Golden St., Norwich

New volunteers are always welcome!

No experience is needed and it’s very rewarding! Please contact Mike Sherb at (860) 691-0622 or [email protected].
