T HE most elaborate attempts, by the most gifted writers, utterly fail to convey, to those who

have never seen them, an idea of what the Caverns really are. Even the most modern

photographers fail to reproduce adequately the true likeness of the stalactites, stalagmites, columns

and drapery in their wonderful figures and to bring out fully the delicate hues and shadows

wrought by the hand of nature.

Although no one realizes more fully than the writer how imperfect and inadequate any

illustration or description must necessarily be; this little book ~ill give a slight intimation of

what the tourist may expect to see in this greatest of World Wonders in the famous Shenandoah

Valley of Virginia.

The Caverns were discovered, after a long-continued search, on August 13, 1878, by Messrs.

T. B. Stebbins, A. J. Campbell, and W. B. Campbell.

They are fully lighted with electricity and fitted throughout with cement walks, stairways,

and iron railings. The Caverns of Luray are visited each year by thousands of persons from all

parts of the globe; all testifying to their supreme beauty and interest.
