Happy New Year 2013. It was a massive New Years this year as the centre of town was closed down to traffic through Sudirman and Thamrin and unprecedented crowds gathered to ring in the New Year. The action that night has been compared to the world’s great cities like New York or Paris, but we wouldn’t want to go that far, now would we? Fireworks were blazing all over the city and bars and clubs were full to the brim to welcome in 2013. Let’s hope you all had a wonderful time and this year brings all the happiness you deserve or require.

There were a bunch of events on during the festive season but mainly centered around Christmas and New Years and while a lot of people were out of town in places like Bali or further afield good times were had in most venues.

One thankful by-product of the exodus from town was the lighter traffic and the ease of getting around. These holiday periods in the city always offer great moments of relaxed driving and are always welcome. The daily stress is subdued to almost a point of being bearable at these times. It’s too bad they don’t last longer.

Now we are back into a brand new year and aren’t they travelling fast nowadays? With a new year comes new hope and 2013 looks set to be bigger and better than ever before. A lot of expectation is building for the new Jokowi government and what they are going to do to make this city a better and easier place to live for everyone. In the next few months there is no doubt that we’ll be able to see clearly if anything tangible is going to come of it. We hope so much that it we do.

We also hope that just like last year, the number of international performing artists and entertainers continue to flock to these shores like they did last year and bring their very special acts with them. Just this next week we have Swedish House Mafia and a number of top DJs arriving. Bring it on and bring on 2013.

After bringing in Above & Beyond, Tritonal and many other big-time DJs throughout 2012, Illigals Jakarta has made a reputation as the go-to place for the hardcore clubber with serious taste in trance and progressive music. So much so, it was named Best Club of the Year from the Paranoia award 2012. 2013 will even be a bigger year for them, and as early as January 24, DJ-slash-producer Jaz Von D from the Netherlands will perform at Illigals. Then on February 1 Armada music’s DJ from Australia, tyDI, is scheduled to bring serious beats to the club. The following week is also not to be missed as Dutch trance megastar DJ Dash Berlin will be bringing the house down in the MusicIsLife event.

Compared to the ‘70s and ‘80s, today’s music scene is definitely ripe with options. However it is undeniable that the nostalgic tunes of an era marked with fondu, psychedelic fashion and hippies, this music is still enjoyed by many old-school fans these days. Seeing an opportunity, music promoter Andalan Entertainment has invited two ‘70s and ‘80s funk and soul sensations The Commodores and Tavares to perform live in the Retro Reunited concert set to be held in Tennis Indoor Gelora Bung Karno on April 5. The concert will also feature Indonesia’s very own funk and soul artists such as Fariz RM, Reza Arthamevia and The Groove. Retro Reunited was initially planned to be held on December 2, but the headliners request it to be postponed due to hurricane Sandy. Tickets are available now at www.rajakarcis.com.

Indonesia can never get enough of K-pop, and with that the 7-member boyband U-Kiss will soon make its first ever visit to Jakarta. Debuting in 2008, U-Kiss is an acronym for Ubiquitous Korean International idol Super Star. Their Jakarta visit will be even more than just a concert, the so-called ‘Fan Party’ concept will also include various interactive sessions such as ‘fan sign’, ‘high five’, ‘hug session’, group photo and dinner. Although the concept is relatively new for Indonesian fans, Oppa Oppa Live, the show organizer, said the event will also come with an interview session with the fans and many fun games, to create a “feeling of meeting an old friend”. U-Kiss will perform on February 2 at the Tennis Indoor Senayan. Tickets are now available at www.oppaoppalive.com/buy-ticket.

Has BeenJasper Kuijper adalah Jaz Von D, DJ kelahiran tahun 1991.

Jasper Kuijper AKA Jaz Von D was born in 1991, and has produced music and remixes since he was of a young age. The hangovers have come and gone and the credit card bills to pay for your end of year merry making have already arrived. What

next? You’ll have to look forward, not back, otherwise you’ll end up mired in depression.

At the end of my last article, I hinted that many might be thinking about making a New Year’s resolution. I also looked at how a compromised approach was likely to affect two issues of topical interest. The first was the US “fiscal cliff”, which dominated the international news agenda as the end of the year approached.Technically, the US did not jump over the cliff in the end but the result was an eleventh-hour quick fix rather than a grand bargain, with many key spending decisions postponed for two months. However, the world breathed a sigh of relief, if immediate market reaction was anything to go by. The key benefit for President Obama was that he avoided what could have been a disastrous start to both the year and his second term in office.

Freshly re-elected, he was more determined than ever to stick to commitments he’d made during his campaign. Conversely, the Republican party realised they would probably have taken the lion’s share of the blame for the financial and economic calamity that would have followed if a fiscal cliff deal had not been reached.

The second issue was of much greater interest to us here in Jakarta: the on going matter of Governor Joko (“Jokowi”) Widodo’s dealings with the central government over improvements to the capital’s transportation infrastructure. That has still to play out but what happened at New Year could show that Jokowi, too, may have got off to a good start.

His decision to ban motor vehicles from key sections of Jl. Sudirman and Jl. Thamrin allowed open-air music stages to be set up there on

New Year’s Eve. This then enabled the city to participate in what has been described as the biggest festivity the capital has ever hosted.

People from every part of the city and walk of life showed up to see in the New Year: Their body language and the expressions on their faces showed how much they enjoyed the opportunity to party on the nation’s premier boulevard without any interference whatsoever from motor vehicles, even though steady rain fell all evening.

As it was the first of its kind and hastily put together, organizational arrangements were far from perfect but it was a good start and the success of the event probably means it is now here to stay. Although the New Year celebration is literally a once-a-year event, the way it was handled this year is a stark reminder that both pro-car and pro-pedestrian (ie. mass transit) measures must be carefully balanced if the city is not to grind to a halt in 2014, as many have predicted.

So how do we as individuals get 2013 off to a good start? I believe the key is to make – and stick to – realistic New Year resolutions that may be related to personal health or lifestyle, or our dealings with others.

People worldwide identify resolutions for themselves but an astonishing proportion – around 80 per cent-plus – have either partially or completely abandoned their resolutions by the end of January as they are either too ambitious or impractical. This then makes the people who initially adopted them feel all the worse.

Make a good start to 2013 by proving to yourself that you can adopt a meaningful resolution that you’re still adhering to by December. (Jim Read)

Bassist, Radio announceR

Sammy is currently working his butt off in order to achieve his goal: making Lawless the greatest lifestyle shop in the Big Durian. He also spends some of his weekends on the road promoting Seringai’s new album, Taring; while during weekdays he’s busy as an announcer in Gen FM radio. During his time off he hangs out at home or goes away with his family. He can sometimes be seen drinking beer and banging his head at music concerts, while at the same time he claims to be 24/7 staying alert just in case a zombie apocalypse finally happens.

What music are you into at the moment? Right now I’m pretty much into the Deftones’ latest album, Koi No Yokan. I listen to it almost all the time. In the car trapped in traffic, on my iPod, on the plane, and so on. Also Torche’s Harmonicraft. Yeah, man, I personally think that the rock and heavy metal albums of 2012 are really interesting.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it?It was Metallica’s Black Album. You can consider me a late starter in terms of knowing what was going on in the 80’s and early 90’s, as it’s definitely not Metallica’s best album. I got to know the previous ones after. I also discovered Iron Maiden after that. I started learning to play guitar because of those Metallica albums. It was so good, I just had to learn to play it... To impress girls as well—but later on I found out that metal music attracts men more than women. Haha.

What are your all-time favourite albums? Why?Well, Metallica’s And Justice For All has got to be one of them. Because it was one of those eureka!-shouting albums in my life. I also love Black Sabbath’s Paranoid, Queens Of The Stone Age’s Songs for the Deaf, Taint’s Secrets and Lies, Foo Fighters’ The Color and the Shape, Mute Math’s Teleprompt, Beastie Boys’ Ill Communication, and Pure Saturday’s self-titled album; to name a few. Those albums are the ones that I play over and over again and never get bored. Those aren’t albums, they’re magic! Aside from Seringai’s influences I also listen to a lot of non heavy metal/punk/hardcore bands, old and new. It’s really good to keep myself sane by not listening to hyper blasts, sustaining low E chords, or dudes growling all the time...

What was the worst record you ever purchased? It has to be Ugly Kid Joe’s As Ugly As They Wanna Be somewhere back in the early 90’s. I bought the damn thing because I had a lot of friends back then who were into that “Everything About You” song. I also saw it being played often on TV and it was even featured as the soundtrack of Wayne’s World. Not to mention, their kid-giving-the-middle-finger t-shirt was a massive hit. So I bought it, listened to it, didn’t like it, listened to it again, still didn’t like it, felt really bummed about it, would like to get a refund for the money and time spent listening to it, gave it to a cousin, waved goodbye, and never heard it again.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?Dave Grohl. I mean he was the drummer of the legendary Nirvana, he’s the leading man in Foo Fighters, he played the drums for Queens Of The Stone Age and Killing Joke, he formed Probot and had all of his metal music idols sing in it, he just won a Grammy, and he was recently named one of the richest drummers in the world. Who wouldn’t want to be him?

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? I just started reading Mötley Crüe’s The Dirt. I actually have had this book for a month or so already but haven’t had the time to read it until now. I really enjoyed reading their previous book, The Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx, and didn’t want it to end. Even though I’ve only just started reading The Dirt, I would give it a solid 9 already. It’s a really good autobiography. It’s badass, extreme, sad, intense, and very inspiring. Basically, it inspires you not to be like them haha!

What new movie should people see? Why?I think everybody should watch Life Of Pi. Especially in times like now where a lot of religion-related issues are big. I watched it like a week ago and it was really good and the visuals were fantastic. To me the movie suggests that you should have faith in whatever you choose to believe.

What song do you choose to start your weekend? If I had to choose a weekend kickstarter, it would have to be “Annihilation (Of the Generations)” by S.T.U.N or maybe “The Age of Pamparius” by Turbonegro. Really want to watch them both live!

And song you choose to end your weekend?“Whorehouse Blues” by Motörhead or something soothing like any song by Joao Gilberto while sipping on a really really strong Mojito would make a nice closing.

Do you have a lover you miss in Russia? Thinking about that guy in the countryside of Florence or just want

your mates recent success in the USA?

Forging a friendship during their academic years in a university in Australia, 24 year old Aldwin & Willy now spearhead FlowerAdvisor.com, a simple yet extremely purposeful and lucrative business that aims to bridge the distance between friends and lovers alike with flowers and gifts. Take your pick from over a 110 countries and these boys will get your goodies sent.

The Beat sits down with these dynamic gentlemen and talks about their vision and why they value flowers as a commodity.

Gentlemen, tell us a little about Flower Advisor.com

FlowerAdvisor came about as a result of a prominent absence of a single strong brand in Asia for international flower delivery. We’d like

to clarify that we are not florists, but rather our business is an e commerce business based around flowers and gifts. We are an Indonesian owned business with an office here and in Singapore. We call the Singapore office our HQ simply because the office there operates 24 hours year round. Our main goal when we set this up was to bridge the distance between business associates, friends and lovers all over. We are a company that delivers flowers and also gift sets to a 110 countries all over the world and fast with prices that are as cheap as it gets.

So, why build a business around flowers?

That’s a question we get often and the answer is really quite simple. From our point of view flowers are a bit of commodity. It has a global appeal, and last we checked giving/sending flowers has never gone out of style. It’s an idea that’s been going strong since the stone age and ever since.

I have never heard of this business up until

meeting the both you. How long has this business been running and how does it operate?

Yeah, unfortunately the brand hasn’t quite gotten the attention in this area of south east Asia but otherwise we do pretty well. Despite the improvements in the information technology part Indonesia is still left behind when it comes to matters of the internet. Small examples would be slow and unreliable internet, something that is absolutely crucial in our business. This is one of the reasons we have a head office in Singapore. With all that being said we have noticed a spike in the amount of Indonesian clients and so there is improvement regardless. We’ve had this business for 4 years now and after the initial knee jerk reactions any startup business would’ve experienced we got through and we are very happy with our brand. In terms of how we operate it’s very simple. We are just like any other online shop. You click on our website, pick your flowers and destination, your message, punch in your credit card details and boom! Job done.

Sounds very simple, but how do you guarantee fair prices in a global market you deliver to?

Good question. Over the past four years we have built an extensive network with local florists in 110 different countries and we are adding to that list. So because local florists sell flowers at a price that doesn’t include shipping and such it naturally becomes way cheaper and that’s what we work with. We are also happy that this results in these florists generating more income because of we basically bridge the gap, we always have something for florists to send anytime and anywhere.

What has this business taught you about flowers?

Haha, that flowers are a girls best friend other than diamonds. And also that even numbers of flowers are given in an Asian culture meanwhile in the eastern European/Baltic nations you give flowers in the odd numbers. So much really, but mainly that flowers are so versatile that it’s the perfect gift most times.

The Idea behind the business is pretty simple, are there a lot of companies like yours out there?

Well we can say that there are a lot of online florists, however, most of them only cater to the local market. So I don’t see that there are a lot of people doing the exact same thing, which is an international flower and gift delivery service.

How much do you generate as a business and how do stay ahead of the competition?

We cannot reveal the exact figures, but we generate more than a million dollars revenue yearly. In order to stay ahead of our game we spend a lot reinvesting, improving and maintaining our business and we are confident about our network with florists around the world and the good relationship we have built with them over the years. I must remind you that we deliver to 110 different countries and counting and we deliver even on short notice. So far no one has been able to compete with that.

So if I wanted to start a company just like yours, the both of you wouldn’t have a problem?

Haha. Well we are more than happy to assist if you want to set up a business like us. In fact we provide a platform for people enabling them to set up their own international online shop by leveraging FlowerAdvisor International coverage and the best thing? It’s free! So if there’s anyone out there interested, do feel free to contact us.

Jakarta, one can practice socializing tirelessly day after day and enjoy doing so without hassle. From

conversational lunches to tipsy talk over drinks, it is undeniable that this art is best practiced over food and alcohol.

Reasons as to why such garrulous habits have arisen in this beautiful city are often debated. Some suggest that this is due to the extensive and now fully embedded “mall culture” that has permeated the entire city. Others attribute such expressions of sociability (and consequently, the unquenchable demand for malls) to the inherent nature of human beings. Being a rather friendly, amiable, semi-social being myself, I am inclined to support the latter. After all, what would life be if I couldn’t enjoy my daily serving of gossip and business over a classic caesar? Living might then amount to a little less than nothing. Call it dramatic and biased if you like, but in this city, relationships are one of the most precious assets to own.

This being said, the precise location, the exact hotspot to be at, cannot simply be pinpointed. Locations can often be like fashion trends with their crowds changing within seasons. As such I have just listed 4 popular areas that have a good mix of restaurants, cafes, clubs and crowds.

THAMRINPrice: Not for those on a BudgetMalls: Grand Indonesia and Plaza IndonesiaPlaces to Chill: Cork and Screw, Playground, Canteen, Tin Pan Alley, Social HouseNightlife: Skye, and ImmigrantMust See: Skye, great views of the city

SENAYANPrice: AverageMalls: Plaza Senayan and Senayan CityPlaces to Chill: Portico, Brew House, Black CatNightlife: Red Square, Equinox, X2, Diagonal, DomainIf you dare: find a place called Asaf, for dodgy cheap bubble gum tasting alcohol

SCBD Price: Average to highMalls: Pacific PlacePlaces to Chill: Potato Head, Lucy in the Sky, Canteen, LibericaNightlife: Bengkel, Fable, Red Line

KemangPrice: Low Average - HighMalls: None, but lots of independent retail boutiquesPlaces to Chill: Café Amore, Vin+, The Trip, Casa, Tree House, Nightlife: Shy Roof Top, Tipsy, Nu China, Elbow RoomExtra: Good place to find good food, although it can be quite priceyAnd there are so many other places and clubs in Kemang, there are just too many to list.

There are countless other locations to enjoy in Jakarta. However, nightlife and food aside, the beauty in such an imminent culture of sociability underpins the lifestyle that is witnessed on a day-to-day basis in Jakarta. Within such a framework, it is only through friendship that one can experience the value time and place. Hence, as any Jakartan will know, the best places to be in this city are only known through the word of mouth or right here at the beat, of course.

Joe Lean and the Jing Jang JongJoe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong

Garage-punk squall from DalstonKrautrockcosmonaughts.

Psychedelic Perth quintet sidestep the ‘difficult second album’ by recording this stoned beaut.

Scrapped album by three fifths of Toy. Two words; torrent search.

Like this? Try these:

Tame ImpalaLonerism

S tumbling into the psychedelic netherworld of Toy is nothing if not a giddy thrill –all the soaring chunks of garage-rock, violence and post-punk drama fronted by scraggly-haired frontman Tom Dougall, crooning away like a hungover spectre

from behind his fringe while the rest of the band disappear into heavily feedbacked miasma of Neu! Krautrockclatter.

Formed from the remnants of now defunct Indie rockers Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, NME picked them as one of the “100 new bands you must hear”, but perhaps most apt was one critic’s assertion that Toy sounds like “some kind of late-80s jam session between Stereolab, Felt and Pulp”. Wowsers.

The album doesn’t open with a bang, but with ‘Colours Running Out’ fading in like a slow motion wave, almost like it’s been playing in the background the whole time and you’ve only just turned the volume up. The poppy post-punk sparkle of the euphoric ‘The Reasons Why’ then dissolves into ‘Dead & Gone’ to make an opening trilogy that will make your average East London band sick with envy.

‘My Heart Skips a Beat’ is a beautifully choreographed ballad dripping in synthesizer, and ‘Drifting Deeper’ runs off like a druggy ghost train ride to nowhere. Multi-layered ‘Kopter’ ends the metamorphic trip in a suitably spaced out fashion.

Still in their infancy, Toy are a good band that still have some way to go before settling in to being a great one, but if this debut is anything to go by, the future looks very bright indeed.

have very sensitive skin that looks very thin on the surface. My capillaries are prominent with the naked eye, which is one of the reasons why I’m not really into facial scrub. Knowing that it’s necessary to exfoliate regularly, I just settle with a facial scrub. I don’t have any problems using chemical

exfoliator but somehow using a facial scrub makes me feel uncomfortable. The beads of the scrub can feel a bit rough on the skin, leaving my skin red. Not to

mention that most facial scrub tends to strip excess oil from your face, it’ll usually end up leaving your skin feeling really tight. For me, since I have

really dry skin, most often than not, my skin would feel really itchy after using a facial scrub because it’s excessively dry.

The facial scrub from ROC however, promises deep gentle cleansing and purifies the skin with its soft micro exfoliating beads

that will leave your skin hydrated and supple, as well as brighten up your complexion. Sounds to good to be true doesn’t it?

Let’s start with the key ingredients. According to their website, they explained that they have 4 ingredients that will exfoliate while leaving your skin feeling comfortable. They are:

• A combination of micro-beads for their efficient but mild exfoliating properties.• A combination of soft surfactants for their gentle cleansing properties.• Bentonite (natural clay) for its smoothing properties.• A high level of Glycerin for its moisturising properties

First thing first, the micro exfoliating beads are really gentle! It’s bright pink in colour and the shape is well-rounded so it won’t leave any microscopic tears on your skin. As you massage it through your skin, the pink beads will dissolve. What else? ROC facial scrub has a really nice soft scent and I can’t figure out what it is, but it’s nice and not overwhelming at all. When I wash my face, my skin feels refreshed and supple, and no tightening whatsoever. I’m happy! So if you’re like me, and prefer a gentle facial scrub, then I’d definitely recommend ROC soft smoothing scrub for you.

PALETTES GALORE FROM 2012 HOLIDAY COLLECTION!by Annisa

Year End is always associated with festive season, not only for the most welcomed big holiday break but it’s also considered the prefect time to shop. Retail companies and malls are having their end of year

sale, and beauty departments always have their holiday gift selections. It’s that time of year that’s worth the wait because this is the time where major

cosmetic companies come out with their holiday palettes!

I note that no less than 25 palette products were released approaching December 2012, some of them are part of the brand’s latest collection. For holiday palettes, some of them offer a huge color selection in one palette where others stick with function and perfect-for-gift packaging.

With so many available, not all of them are in Indonesia but they’re available online. These are my top seven picks from the holiday palettes. I purposely put Urban Decay out of the table as they’ve gotten too much attention already.

Bobbi Brown Bellini Palette ($75)

It’s just simply irresistible, for a natural seeker look. 10 eye shadows to mix and match, giving a shimmery and light-capturing look. A classy and long lasting choice, perfect for a fresh natural look during the holidays, without too many colors involved.

Too Faced Sweet Indulgence Palette ($52)

Well maybe Too Faced had some issue regarding their color-pigmentation performance, but this palette really is something! Just take a look at the detailed review here. No wonder many customers fell in love with it. 16 eye shadow, blushes, bronzers (I just don’t get why Too Faced really likes to put bronzers on its palettes), highlight, shadow insurance, just all you need, on the go! Plus, they have these 3 get-the-look cards! A savior for beginners, isn’t it?

Laura Mercier Glamour Wardrobe Dual Decker Palette ($98)

A sleek black packaging more suitable for career women, than for a holiday occasion. It comes with eight well-chosen eye shadows and a range of five lip colors and four cheek colors. It’s easily stowed away in a purse, briefcase, or tote bag — ready to create the perfect look and has a better color payoff.

Disney Cinderella Palette ($55)

I don’t know if Sephora had come up with Disney series palettes in the past, I found this is the first palette wholly inspired from a Disney movie. A 20-piece eye shadow palette, and all colors are derived from Cinderella original movie scenes. For packaging junkies, the palette artwork is something worth collecting. Created by Disney’s portrayal of Cinderella’s magical moment with elaborate silver and gold detailing. Anyway, their color choices resemble Urban Decay palette, don’t you think?

Trish McEvoy Voyager Collection Glamorous Beauty ($85)

This must-have mini makeup kit is filled with the mistake-proof colors and tools you need for emergency touch-ups on-the-go. The fashionable pink pouch gives a glamour touch to your travel bag, yet functional with all eye shadows, blushes, concealer, lip colors-packed inside. On top of that, six of Trish’s iconic performance-driven brushes are also included.

Bare Minerals ‘White Hot’ Palette ($39)

I never second guessed a good palette that contains simple choices inside. Instead of giving you too many color selections, this palette just goes with one look that’s perfect for everyone. Stowed in a stunningly hot gold case, this is what you’re looking for if you seek a practical and ready-in-a-minute makeup.

Tarte Carried Away Collection ($54)

Travel beautifully with this impressive Tarte’s essential. Tarte has decided to do something different than its regular palette. Inside the classic gold and plum travel case are 8 lip glosses, a brush, a blush, a mini mascara as well as their face powder. Is that all? No! Behind the mirror is an eye shadow palette containing 24 full- sized colors to choose from, 4 of which are matte shades.

From the choices above, I have to say TARTE Carried Away Collection is my favorite, giving its price and everything you get inside. I love the packaging, the practical array of kits inside, and the big mirror, yet they still made it in a slender case! So, what about you? Which one is your favorite?

Page 44: The Beat Jakarta 79

As one of the most famous classic literature pieces, this original work from French 19th century writer, Victor Hugo is definitely recognizable, if not worldy renowned already. It was adapted into one of Broadway’s biggest-selling productions in the 80s and continues to be reproduced around the world, a motion picture in 1998, and now director Tom Hooper is making it into a musical film he promises to be different than the usual. All the songs in this film were shot and performed live by the actresses and actors with some renditions of the original songs. If you too ever dreamt a dream, prepare to sing along, and bring your handkerchief to wipe the tears!

Semua bisnis

For guys who like action, what’s more classic than the conflict between mobsters and police force that is full of gunshots, explosions and bare fists fight? Probably if it’s set in vintage Los Angeles in 1949 with familiar acclaimed senior actors playing the roles. The story tells about a small secret crew of LAPD who tries and is brave enough to take on the most fearsome mob king of the West Coast, Mickey Cohen. Load your rifles and join the squad!

Nowadays, many local films in Indonesia have learned about improving their production value. This new film is produced with involvement of foreign

parties, a UK-newcomer director, and an ensemble of rising-star Indonesian young actors with a setting to thrill. A group of men, a quest for treasure deep in the jungle, trapped inside a mine used as a military bunker, and they’re not alone? Interesting premise, right? Bet you’re sold too!

Siap bergabung? Bawa senjata lengkapmu!

The legend of Yamashita’s Gold lures a treasure hunter and his group deep into the Indonesian jungle. Once they are trapped in an abandoned World War II Japanese bunker, they face the terrifying reality that the only way out is to go further in.

CounTdownIndonesia, Action, Thriller. Director: Steven Sheil. Writer: Steven Sheil, Ziad Semaan. Cast: Ario Bayu, Mike Lewis, Joe Taslim, Jaitov Tigor, Miki Mizuno, Carmen Soo.

food at its best. Served with baby potatoes, the chicken could easily be a perfect meal for this holiday season. or any season, for that matter. The Pan Seared Salmon with Green Mango and Tamarind Reduction (142k) is another example of Chef Budi’s excellent flair. Cooked to perfection, the salmon is served on a bed of Thai-style green mango salad, and accompanied by mashed potatoes and tamarind-based dressing. A bit of the east, a bit of the West, tastes simply the best!

The Choco eruption (45k) is a crowd favorite for dessert; decadent molten chocolate in a cake, served with vanilla ice cream and mix berries sauce. But give the Drunken Berry’s Risotto (88k) a try; a dessert with sweet strawberry jelly and caramelized Absinth risotto sabayon. Sublime!

Munchies Dine And Bar also has an extensive drink menu, and the bartenders came up with some wonderful cocktails, too. The Black District (90k), Royal Castle (100k), or Princess Warrior (90k) could be your next favorite tipple.

With Munchies Dine And Bar, you can expect a gourmet destination minus the pretense; somewhere you’re happy to hang out, both before and after you’re done eating. Highly recommended. (Budi Iskandar)

Since successfully opening their first Bistro outlet at Gandaria City Mall, Munchies has become a brand of eatery that has quickly

established a firm following and become the popular spot for hanging out while having a great meal. And now, they are launching a second outlet at the newly opened superblock Kota Kasablanka. A ‘new and improved’ Munchies, if you will, simply named “Munchies Dine And Bar”.

This maybe a new venue with a slightly more upscale concept, but rest assured the vibe is far from stuffy. It’s the chic yet relaxed ambiance that makes this place a winner. Munchies Dine And Bar consists of three areas: A dining room, a bar/lounge area, and even an outdoor patio! It’s a fine place for a business meeting, yet casual enough for a first date, family gathering, or a catch-up session with friends.

Just like at his first venture, Executive Chef Budi Kurniawan brings his wonderful creations to Munchies Dine And Bar. The menu boasts a strong modern sensibility, accented by Asian flavors. His dishes are never ordinary.

We visited this eatery on a rainy evening recently. After beating the rush hour traffic and a bit of flooding (Quite a regularity in Jakarta nowadays, sadly), we felt like treating ourselves with some delicious dishes of Chef Budi’s. The hearty Tomato Soup (38k) was our first choice; a perfect treat for such a day. The Prawn Salad with Citrus Dressing (59k) was our next pick. The sweet and tangy combination of the dressing really complimented the succulent shrimp and the greens very well.

Now we couldn’t pass having some of the Munchies Chick Wings (39k); wonderfully 24-hours marinated chicken wings with Munchies’ own secret recipe. But the new Mario Trilogy (39k) also won our stamp of approval. The dish is made out of three kinds of mushroom (button, shiitake, and portobello), oven-baked, and topped with mozzarella cheese. And when accompanied with the home made Garlic Bread (33k), the Mario Trilogy is perfection!

Next, a couple of main course dishes took center stage. The Baked Half Chicken with Lemon Herb Butter Sauce (85k) was comfort

The Harvest was established in 2004, and it is the first specialized European style pastry shop chain in Indonesia. over the years, they have opened up about a dozen outlets, mostly in Jakarta, of course, plus a couple in other cities in Java. It is a statement of how The Harvest have quickly established themselves to become the popular place for all things sweet and sugary.

Now, The Harvest is not a restaurant per se, but more like a pastry shop with a couple of savory selections, should you feel like it. We visited them on their branch on Jalan Dharmawangsa recently. And yes, we were in the mood for something sweet after all that Jakarta traffic! The place is neatly surrounded by lush greenery; a nice respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. The interior is simple chic. But the one thing you notice, it’s like a roomful of dessert creations. Cakes, chocolates, cookies, ice cream, etc. You name it, they most likely have it. They do have sandwiches or quiche, but it’s the sweet stuff that keep the customers coming back for more.

The selection of desserts here is really mind boggling. Hats off to The Harvest’s team for their skill and creativity to add some sweetness to your day.

The beetroot-based Red Velvet (250k for a whole cake/25k per slice) is as we know, the latest craze in town. But don’t let it stop you

from trying out the other delectable treats here. We chose a slice of the Pistachio Dacquois (20k) cake; a delectable mint white chocolate mousse layered between pistachio dacquois and red current. And we matched it with a scoop of Pistachio Ice Cream (17k). A cool pair of green goodies.

Speaking of ice cream, there are at least a dozen flavors to choose from at The Harvest. There’s French Vanilla, Cookies and Cream, Bluberry, ogura/Red Bean, and even the local Jackfruit (Nangka) flavor!

We also had a taste the Strawberry Triffle Gourmandise (40k); layer vanilla sponge with vanilla pudding and sweet strawberry toasted crumble and chocolate swirl. It is a wonderful piece of heaven served in a tall glass!

The multi-colored macaroons (9k each) are possibly the best in town. Take your pick from raspberry, pistachio, blueberry, banana, chocolate, or strawberry flavor.

Don’t forget to accompany your dessert with some fantastic frozen drinks like the Faluda (32k) or Frozen Coffee Oreo (28k) and Frozen Mocha With Jelly (28k).

Looking for gifts? The Harvest have a wide variety of gift ideas for you to choose from. From a set of chocolates to plush teddy bears to exclusive gift hampers, these are perfect presents for your loved ones.

Make sure you visit The Harvest for all your sweet indulgence. We are already planning to see their latest outlet at Jalan Senopati. After all, you can never get enough sweet things in your life, right? And there are still plenty of decadently delicious desserts to choose from. Tiramisu? Cheese Cake? opera Cake? Chocolate Praline? Yes, please. All of them! For an outlet near you, please check out their website: www.harvestcakes.com.

Whatever your take on it, it is now essential that you wrestle back control of your own life, take responsibility and quit being fatalistic about the pointlessness of trying.

It is time to take bold steps, don’t be afraid to stand out, stand up and be counted. Hell, it’s 2013.

New Year’s resolutions always strike me as being as misguided as trying to give things up on a Monday. Monday is already a bad day, why make it worse?

New Year’s Day is a day where any self respecting fan of alcohol will be lying low, eating carbohydrates and hiding in a cool, dark room.

Is this the day to start your detox, your new gym routine or start being nicer to people you don’t really like?

Far better instead to start addressing the things in your life that can be changed through better intentions. These are usually issues that be can considered while lying down.

Help people in need? This is a good one to aim for, if nothing else it looks good on the list.

Adopt a healthy hobby? Yes. You don’t have to get up and start it on New Year’s Day as it may take some time and research to identify what this might be, so you can ease into this one.

Make more time for yourself? Highly recommended and while you’re at it, pass the remote control.

Update your look? An excellent choice and one that can be taken in stages, nothing too abrupt. Considering your new look will involve reading magazines and researching hairdressers etc who

also offer good pampering treatments. Give yourself a month at least.

Save money? Definitely another activity that requires strategizing, time to get out the list and write down all the ways you can save, while lying in a cool room.

Get active? Yes, this is good. Head to the beach and think about it, get inspiration from others who are swimming, surfing and jogging to avoid the rain.

Get motivated? This can be done while researching and signing up for motivational sites, The Daily Love is a nice one, offering all sorts of feel-good-about-yourself advice. It arrives in your inbox each morning, perfect.

Stop smoking? All that festive season partying has probably left you with a bad taste in your mouth so this can be achieved with a full dosage of patches or champix if it doesn’t send you mad. Takes about two months for the treatment. Best of all stress encourages more smoking so relax.

Positive Affirmations? Picture yourself in a lovely home, with money in the bank, lots of admirers and an efficient working life. It’s that easy, or so they say.

Stop worrying. That’s all, also easy.

In a nutshell, it seems that the best resolutions are the easiest of all, simply relax, picture your new self and concentrate very hard (this is the most difficult bit), according to the laws of the universe, this will work.
