“When I got home, I got out of my car andsuddenly heard a loud hissing noise. I wasvery shocked to see this snake in my garagebecause I thought that snakes hibernatedduring winter,” she said.

an acquaintance, offered to collect thesnake that she could relax.

“I was scared and when I wasn’t hidinginside my house, I was inside my garagetrying to move out the snake.”

Karlitz said that the puff adder was notbeing aggressive and was most likely onlylooking for a warm place to sleep. Accordingto research, puff adders are said to have thefastest strike of any snake in the world, although mostly they are quite sedate. Theirvenom is highly toxic to humans and if leftuntreated could lead to death. Whenfrightened, the snakes will coil up and puffthemselves out to look as big as possible.

The danger with puff adders is that they areexcellently camouflaged. Puff adders have achevron pattern in their scales and tend to bemostly olive green and brown in colour.

Real men don’t rape

There is something terribly wrong inthe world. It’s not a new thing —such records as have survived tell usthat as far back as ancient Egypt, men were executed for rape.

Of course back then, they wereexecuted.

These days, many prefer to blamethe victim. “Oh, but she shouldn’thave been drinking,” they will say.“She was asking for it, wearing sucha short skirt.”

Of course she was. Everyoneknows women secretly want to beraped, don’t they? And of coursethose cases of elderly women andlittle children being raped…theywere asking for it too, weren’t they?Everyone knows little girls areterrible flirts andgrandmothers…well, we all knowwhat they are like.

If you read that last sentence andwinced a little and thought ‘ofcourse not, don’t be stupid,’ then youare guilty of not following a chain oflogic to its end.

Women do not ask to be raped.Old women do not ask to be

raped.Little girls do not ask to be

raped.Teenagers do not ask to be raped.Drunk women do not ask to be

raped. The point is that nobody asks to

be raped. The point is that women do not

decide when rape will occur. It is frankly ridiculous to say to a

woman ‘don’t go out late at night.’Less than six months ago TheBEAT reported on the case of awoman who was raped in her ownhome, by a man who climbed inthrough a window.

So we tell women not to wearrevealing clothes. Really? Womenhave been raped wearing abayas, they have been raped wearing thehijab. They have been rapedwearing jeans and long skirts andshort skirts.

Clothing does not determinewhen a woman will be raped.Nothing a woman can do, short ofkilling herself before it canhappen, determines whether shewill be raped.

Animals are the ones who decidewhen rape will happen. Not men,and not women. These animalswho walk among us and think thatthey can take what they want whenthey want it, these predators whothink that they have some kind ofright to rape…they are the oneswho determine when a woman willbe raped.

One out of three South Africanwomen will be sexually assaultedor raped in her life, and that’s thelow estimate.

Ladies and gentlemen, it lookslike the animals are winning.

Klaas Mabunda writes: My dearcomrade, brother and friend, MphoDube.

The article written by yourself inThe Sunday Independent, dated 5July 2015, encouraged my focus injotting this piece of opinion.

Dube, for a while now I have readclosely your work, whichinsinuated that you are that oneperson which the ANC can do with, for the ANC needs to criticized bycritics who carries around withthem immediate solutions toidentified weaknesses andchallenges, some important tool oforganizational existence yourcriticism lacks.

Importantly, it should be notedthat I too, miss the wisdom andleadership of Cassel Mathale.

Although unfortunate, theleadership tenures are bound to bedifferent, so is in their approachesand actualities, thus, like you, I amdevastated to observe themembership deterioration, asituation to be blamed on us themembers, who chose to not torenew our membership, or evenwho silently and mischievouslykept quiet and decided not toremind or caution others of thelapsing of their membership, something which cannot be blamedon the PEC.

Rule 23.1 of the constitution ofthe ANC states that: “Everymember of the ANC shall belong toa branch, which is the basicstructure of the organisation.”

This is supportive to myconviction that we cannot blamethe PEC mainly, although it mightbe failing in its oversight role.

The Oath I know you also signed, unless you did so without readingit, or if you did, you did so withoutcomprehension, has in it thefollowing statement: “I will placemy energies and skills at thedisposal of the Organisation andcarry out tasks given to me, that Iwill work towards making the ANCan even more effective instrumentof liberation in the hands of thepeople, and that I will defend theunity and integrity of theOrganisation and its principles, andcombat any tendency towardsdisruption and factionalism.”

I am not saying that we should notcriticise the ANC, what I am sayingis that the damage we have done tothe ANC through the media isenough, we are at the verge ofburying what has been our platformfor everything, therefore, let us riseand use internal platforms to echoour views.

I know that in your line of duty, sarcasm is principal, but for thesake of your love to and on theANC, please consider its fate.

He added that the fact that themunicipality cuts off residents’ electricitywhen they are unable to pay for services, isa concern to them. Mothokwa also said thatthe municipality is failing these wards whenit comes to budgets and service delivery.

Other speakers also addressed theattendees and urged members of thecommunity to make sure that the people areaware of the DA. They emphasized that thepeople need to understand the purpose ofopposition parties, and said that they aretired of empty promises from the currentgovernment.
