OUR JUDGES

Dogs - Mrs Kim Evans (Treebeard)I first started showing Bearded Collies in 1983 and have owned, shown, photographed and lived with them ever since. We have had ten Bearded Collies, plus some to stay/show for friends and several rescue dogs have been guests. All live in the house as part of the family. We have won Champion titles, CCs, Stud Book Numbers, Junior Warrants, my personal favourite was winning Best in Show at the Bearded Collie Club Show. We breed very occasionally.I have tried to put something back into the breed by working for different clubs. I have attended Seminars and passed a Judging Diploma and the Kennel Club’s required Seminars etc before awarding CCs.I can think of no better way of spending a day than surrounded by this lovely breed and having the pleasure of assessing their merits when judging is a bonus.

Bitches - Mrs Yvonne Fox (Bushblades)We got our first Beardie in 1988 as a pet but were persuaded to show her - and got hooked! I started handling our Beardies in 1992, although from the beginning I had watched them being judged and read everything I could find about the breed. Although we only tend to breed when we want to keep a puppy, we have bred 5 Champions; 4 bitches, one of whom is also a Dutch Champion, and one Champion dog, who was also Top Puppy in 2007 and Top Junior in 2008, as well as several other RCC winners and two CC winners. We currently share our home with six Beardies - they are first and foremost our beloved companions and share our lives and our sofa! Showing takes a bit of a back seat these days but we do get to some of those closer to home.I did not start judging at Open Shows until 1998, feeling it important to get a thorough grounding in construction and movement and the specifics of the breed, although I had judged at Exemption Shows and Match nights prior to that - a great learning experience! I first awarded CCs in the UK in 2008 and I have also had the pleasure of judging in Germany, Sweden and America.I believe the Beardie should be a lithe, unexaggerated dog and one that should have the construction and movement to be capable of doing the job for which it was originally bred. Their wonderful character is for me the icing on the cake!I was Secretary of the Bearded Collie Club for 11 years and am currently Secretary of the Joint Breed Liaison Committee, dedicated to the health, welfare and development of our breed.I believe it is a great honour to be asked to judge your breed and I have always enjoyed my judging appointments and the interesting challenges they present.

Referee - Mrs Glenda O'Connell (Atherleigh)I have owned our lovely breed since 1983 and bred my first litter in 1988. To date I have bred 7 litters of Beardies and have bred/owned 7 Champions plus other CC, RCC and JW winners.I judged my first Open Show in 1993, including 2 Club Open Shows, awarding CCs for the first time in 2008. I have been privileged to judge in Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Norway and Prague.I currently share my home with my husband Mark and 3 Beardie girls who are daughter/granddaughters of my Ch Atherleigh Over the Rainbow JW who passed away at the grand age of 17.

BEARDED COLLIE DNA DATABANKTAKE A POSITIVE STEP TO HELP SAFEGUARD

THE FUTURE HEALTH OF OUR BREED

One of the most important legacies we can leave for our breed is a DNA Databank and the Joint Breed Liaison Committee has made arrangements with the Animal Health Trust to collect and archive the DNA from KC Breed registered Bearded Collies.A DNA Databank is a collection of DNA samples from different Bearded Collies that can be stored for an indefinite period of time with a view to using it in the future for research purposes, e.g. investigating the causes of inherited diseases, studies into genetic diversity or the frequency of a genetic mutation in the general Bearded Collie population, such as was carried out in the recent CEA study. We are interested in storing DNA from any Bearded Collie but especially those which have, or will be, used for breeding purposes. We also want to store DNA from those dogs that are known to be affected by, or be closely related to, dogs affected with inherited conditions.DNA can be collected by means of a cheek swab - the cost of the swab, extracting the DNA and storing it is only £5.00 per dog. BCC Rescue and Welfare are pleased to be offering owners the facility to provide samples of Beardies DNA at our Championship Show at the subsidised cost of £2.50 per kit. The BCC are pleased to provide DNA swabs at the subsidised price of £2.50 to all members using the Puppy List service. You can have your dog swabbed at the show - in which case you will need to bring details of your dog, including KC registration number, microchip/tattoo no. if known and details of any possible inherited health conditions, together with copies of any relevant information regarding them i.e. hip score certificates, eye exam certificates, dates of diagnosis and copies of any key notes from the clinical history. OR you can collect a swab kit, do the procedure at home and send your samples and information to the AHT in the envelope provided.Whichever you wish to do please order the number of kits you require on the entry form.Remember it is important that you update the health information on your dog so that any changes in clinical status can be recorded. The AHT also want to know if your dog lived a long healthy life too! Both owner and dog information is kept in the strictest confidence, although from time to time a list of the names of dogs whose DNA is stored may be released to Breed Club representatives. No information other than the name is released.Swabs and submission forms are also available from the Animal Health Trust, email – [email protected] (also the email address for updating the health information on your dog).

To encourage owners to submit samples to the DNA Databank, the swabs are available at a subsidised cost, so they are

HALF PRICE when ordered with your entry.

12. 14. All exhibitors must be familiar with Kennel Club Regulation F (Annex B) - Regulations for the Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition.

15. All dogs resident outside of the UK must be issued with a Kennel Club Authority to Compete number before entry to the show/event can be made. All overseas entries without an Authority to Compete number will be returned to the exhibitor/competitor.

16. Dogs in Vehicles on Hot Days. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events.• When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy

holiday route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.• If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at

all.• The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of

water available to drink.• Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog.• When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle.• Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty

of water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated.• Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended

lengths of time. Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead

to dire results. Please look after your dog’s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED.

17. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the Board for disciplinary action under the Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. The use of pinch collars, electronic shock collars, or prong collars, is not permitted at any show licensed by the Kennel Club. This shall apply at the venue or within the precincts of the show.

18. Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel Club registered.

19. No modifications will be made to the schedule except by permission of the Board of the Kennel Club, which will be followed by advertisement in the Canine press wherever possible.

20. If acknowledgement of receipt of postal entries is required a SAE should be enclosed. 21. All postal entries must be made on or before the closing date of entries (Postmark) upon the entry forms

enclosed for that purpose. All postal entry forms must be accompanied by the appropriate entry fees of the entry will not be accepted.

22. Should a Judge be prevented from fulfilling their engagement the committee reserve to themselves the right of appointing another judge to fulfill their duties. Exhibitors are at liberty to withdraw from competition but no entry fees can be returned.

23. No animal other than an exhibit shall be brought into the precincts of a dog show during its continuance except any dogs registered to assist the disabled or dogs required for educational or instructional purposes or by permission of the committee. However, at the discretion of the show society, a dog brought to the show by a spectator may be admitted into the precincts of the show, with the proviso that those in charge of the dog sign a declaration confirming the dog is free from disease and that the dog will be kept under proper control at all times.

24. Exhibitors showing dogs are not permitted to hold any conversation with the judge during the competition, and any exhibitor who persists in addressing the judge after being requested not to do so by the ring steward, the judge or any member of the committee may be disqualified and reported to the Kennel Club, and any prize awarded to his or her dogs may be forfeited. No person other than the exhibitor (officials excepted) will be allowed in the ring during judging.

25. If in the opinion of the Show Secretary, Show Manager or Judge any dog is considered not in a fit state for exhibition owing to disease, savage disposition or any other cause, the dog may be excluded or removed from the show on the instruction of the show management. Once excluded or removed from the show the dog must not be brought into the show at any time under any circumstances and the case must be reported to the Kennel Club within seven days.

26. The committee will be most anxious for the care and safety of dogs brought for exhibition, but it must be clearly understood that the committee will not be responsible for the entire or partial loss or detention of or damage to a dog or dogs, or any other property whether arising from accident or any other cause whatsoever not for any act or omission of themselves, their officers, agents, servants or others, and it is on this understanding only that entries are accepted.

27. The Officers and Committee of the show accept no responsibility for products advertised or sold by the standholders at the show and remind exhibitors that grooming products on sale may not meet the requirements of the Regulation for Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition.

28. Any owner, competitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog is required to remove as soon as possible any fouling caused by their dog(s) at any Kennel Club licensed show within the licensed venue and within the environs of that event including car and caravan parks and approaches.

29. The owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog at Kennel Club licensed events must at all times ensure that the dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches. This Regulation applies before (at any time during the set up period at the venue), during the event and afterwards (at any time during the breakdown of the event).
