On thirteen Sundays between June and September this year our epistle readings be taken from St Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, the sixth

book of the New Testament. It is, in my view, the greatest work of Christian theology ever written. It’s an extraordinary document in which Paul eloquently describes the tenets of Christian faith to his contemporaries in Rome. Firstly, It tells us convincingly that people were practising Christianity in Rome long before either Peter or Paul arrived there. The faith was most likely imported by Jews from Jerusalem, which was then a part of the Roman Empire. Indeed, historians estimate that in the first century AD, there were at least eight thousand Jews living in Rome and ancient records indicate the existence of at least 13 synagogues. In 49 AD, the Emperor Claudius was so disturbed by incessant fighting in the streets between Jews who recognize Jesus and those who do not that he exiled all Jews from Rome.

Jesus’ Jewish adherents, who welcomed pagans to worship alongside them, were the leaders of the Christian sect. However, when the Jews were exiled the Gentiles, who then made up the majority of Christians in Rome, took up leadership positions in the church, and, by the time the Jews were allowed to return to Rome after the death of Claudius in 54 AD, they were far outnumbered. (Indeed, part of Paul’s letter warns against divisive behaviour in the once united Jewish-Christian church there) Paul had been making missionary trips for many years, and he had founded numerous churches throughout Turkey and Greece by the time he writes his letter in 57 AD. It was Paul’s intention to evangelize in Spain but he, nevertheless, wanted to visit Rome, a place he has never been, first. His letter is intended, in part, to prepare Christians there for his arrival there. When stressing the

importance of the Gospels, Paul reminded his readers of Christ’s sacrifice; and, in accepting it, he says, we allow him to work through us and forgive our sins. In living just lives, we align ourselves with God, but, more importantly, it is faith, not actions, which matter. Although it is necessary for Jews to follow the Law of Moses, it is even more important for them to adhere to the spirit of the law. While Paul sincerely hopes the Roman Jews embrace Christ, he realizes, as a Jew himself, the depth of their tradition makes this inherently difficult. Nevertheless, salvation’s power is available to all those who do, in fact, believe. Your friend, in Christ.

WI Report

Dunkerton W.I. met at Tunley Recreation Centre on Tuesday 13th June.

The meeting opened with speaker Linda Dowsett, author and speaker. Since sadly losing her husband Linda has devoted her time raising money for her late husband's favourite charity, Guide Dogs for the Blind. She has been so successful in raising money through her talks and auctions etc. that she has been instrumental in providing guide dogs Gordon (named after her husband),Jim and Rosie. She has met the recipients of the dogs and has regular up-dates on their progress. So this explains how she came to give us the most amusing and entertaining account of her holiday cruising the Nile. Many, many anecdotes like the bags of sweets for street children and the amorous attention she received from the locals, hence the name of the talk "Love on the Nile" Members were delighted with her talk and look forward to inviting her back for more. There was a real buzz thanks to Linda After a break perusing Linda's photographs and tea, the business began with a warm welcome back to Valerie, who had a lengthy illness and a get-well card signed by members for Angela. Minutes are now emailed or sent by post. There was a large amount of Correspondence, which included a Walk and Lunch meeting at Connies in Timsbury, and a Croquet Taster Day at Peasedown Cricket and Croquet Club (to include a cream tea). Viv took a Craft Stall to Dunkerton Fair, which at the time of writing this, had taken place and was a splendid success. All thanks are due to Viv and the Craft club and their handiwork. Not to mention the glorious weather! Frances gave a detailed, light hearted account of her trip to the AGM in Liverpool. The Resolution results were the Campaign to end Loneliness For 4334 Against 1919 Plastic Soup For 6132 Against 156. In her own words she said she had been truly inspired and proud to be a member of such a great organisation.

Tunley Overdale Footpath

There is to be a site meeting between BANES, David

Veale and relevant Parish Councillors to discuss

improvements to this scheme.

Defibrillators A consultation with Parishioners will be conducted

via the Batch and the Parish website.

Request to BANES for CIL funding of new

footpath by AVS site.

BANES is producing a feasibility study for a stretch

of new footpath to be funded from the Community

Infrastructure Levy.

Consultation on other candidates for CIL

funding

Suggestions received so far include some new play

equipment at the TRC, a new bench by the meadow

in Tunley and a track around the cricket field. The

Clerk will reply to all who have offered ideas. A

decision will be made which to consider for further

work when any more ideas are received and we

know more about any possible contribution required

by BANES from the parish council to the possible

new footpath in Tunley.

The balance of funds as at 15 June is £17,092.27.

It was decided to progress the restoration of two

fingerposts in the parish which will be partly funded

by a ward Councillor’s grant.

purposes are treated in the same way as extensions.

BANES enforcement has visited the site and has been

briefed on the history, in particular the volume of

builder’s waste that has been tipped and the

construction of agricultural buildings without consent.

The new case officer intends to conduct a Land

Registry search to identify the landowner’s name and

residential address, and will be contacting the owner

accordingly. We will be advised of developments by

the officer.

“Running Free”: Consultation on preserving the

free use of public parks

It was agreed to submit a response to be approved by

email that would effectively state that councils should

be free to charge organisations that have salaried staff

but also retain the option to charge local voluntary

organisations where use of council facilities by large

numbers of event participants could result in wear and

tear.

Commemoration: D&TPC Participation?

Once the exact proposed date of the commemorations is

confirmed (post meeting note: confirmed 7.00pm 11

Nov 17) Cllr Gardiner was to contact the TRC about

combining their bonfire night with this celebration. It

was also agreed to hold another Help for Heroes dinner.

Playing Pitch Consultation BANES has proposed a

new strategy to encourage wider use of sports fields.

Cllr Orme had responded to the consultation on this

(Note: to meet BANES deadline for responses) with

regard to the cricket field.

Post Meeting Note: Where have the poppies gone at

the Stoneage Lane Junction? Unfortunately one of

our well meaning local residents, with all the best will

in the world thinking he was helping strimmed off the

old daffodils and in the process cut all the poppies

down. The additional bad news is that because poppies

are annuals the seeds won't form on this year’s flowers

and drop onto the ground for next year’s crop but don't

worry we will sow new seeds for next year.

LOCAL CRIME REPORT UPDATE JULY 2017

Nottingham Knockers

There have been numerous reports of “Nottingham Knockers” operating in the Bath area, most recently in

the Newbridge and Lansdown areas. These are cold callers who tell residents they are ex-offenders trying to go straight, then try and sell poor quality and over-

priced cleaning products. The police want to remind residents they are under no obligation to answer the door to anyone they don’t know or aren’t expecting. If

you do talk to them, they are supposed to be able to provide a valid Pedlar’s Certificate and should leave your property when asked.

Possible rogue traders are also in the area, offering to jet-wash driveways. Again, use the advice already

mentioned but please let the police know they are in your area by calling 101 or by going online at

http://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk. If they give you an advertising flyer, please send it into the neighbourhood watch office.

Nominated Neighbour Scheme

Avon and Somerset Police is marking Stop Adult Abuse Week with the launch of a scheme to protect elderly and vulnerable residents in the region. The Nominated Neighbour scheme is being rolled out across the Avon and Somerset policing area, to help protect elderly and vulnerable residents from bogus callers.

The scheme works by a vulnerable resident identifying a trusted neighbour or friend to act on their behalf as a ‘Nominated Neighbour’. Any unknown callers at the vulnerable homeowner’s door will be directed to their ‘Nominated Neighbour’ so that their credentials and identification can be checked and verified. Once the ‘Nominated Neighbour’ is happy with the caller’s identity, they will accompany them to their neighbour’s house and stay until they have finalised their business and the caller leaves.

Inspector Julie Knight, of the Local Policing Directorate, said: “Older people can be more vulnerable to cons and fraud, doorstep crime, distraction burglary and online/telephone scams. If they have someone they can trust they are more likely to question something, perhaps saving them from a financial loss.”

Dunkerton’s Big Day ……….

2017 Fair & Dog Show

Saturday 17 June was an exceptionally hot day but that did not stop the Fair being well supported at its new site on the cricket field. In fact with extra stalls, including a very popular bouncy slide, the financial outcome, £3,500 to be divided between the Church and Parish Hall, was the third highest.

The Fun Dog Show and Children's Races in the main ring kept everyone amused alongside the challenge of darts, skittles, coconut shy and croquet competitions. There were plenty of stalls with plant and cake sales, hot dogs, the tea tent and the bar alongside panning for gold, lucky dip, craft colouring and many others. The afternoon ended with the Dunkerton Egg Throw before moving to see the traditional Dunkerton Duck Race in front of the Church.

That was not the end of the day because there was time for a well-attended evening barbecue in front of the pavilion with children playing on the cricket field while adults enjoyed burgers and a Thai curry.

None of this would have happened without the support of the stallholders and everyone who helped set up the field and clear up afterwards, but the success of the day was due to the enthusiasm and energy of Alison Gibbs who took on the challenge of organising the day and made many new friends on the way.

The answer to this question is just a few dedicated volunteers; the number of volunteers has decreased over the past few years due to a variety of reasons, to maintain the excellent condition of your facilities at TRC we urgently need to increase the number of volunteers. Help is required with Grass Cutting, General cleaning within the Hall area and Clearing of Dog Waste Bins. There are also vacancies on the management committee where new members would be most welcome, who can actively assist and have a positive, creative approach in keeping this village asset in a viable state for the foreseeable future. If you are an artist or crafts person in the Cam Valley area, now is your chance to sign up as, registration is open for the diverse November Cam Valley Arts Trail weekend. Why not take space to exhibit, and help us celebrate our 5th anniversary, with a wide range of broad spectrum creators of arts and crafts who will be represented at this inspiring, annual show: painting, printing, textile, clay, felt, glass, pastel, silver, wood, and more. If you sign up for a space it will give you a chance to exhibit your original, contemporary work to a large group of enthusiastic visitors from a broad catchment area. Last year we had over 500 visitors, we opened 8 venues, and over 40 people took stands. The Exhibition and Sale will be housed in venues within the villages of the Cam Valley: Paulton, Cameley, Timsbury, High Littleton, Clutton, Temple Cloud, and Farrington Gurney. Entry is free for visitors and many venues have refreshments available. The Arts Trail also hosts a mixture of taster sessions and demonstrations of arts and crafts for visitors to sample. Each venue has a unique character dependent upon the artists showing work at that venue. Cam Valley Arts Trail Group publicise this event widely, over a large area and take out newspaper advertising as well, so artists receive ample promotion.
