Notes from the Principal... Hello Bartlett Families and Friends, I hope you are enjoying the mild winter weather February has brought to us. At Bartlett, we have been busy moving into our second semester learning. While February is Diversity Appreciation Month, we have been exploring and learning about these concepts all year. We have especially concentrated on building compassion and understanding for others during our “We Care Wednesday” lessons this year. Thanks to our Bartlett Buddies Care Club and our incredible staff, literature and lessons have been shared with students on kind-ness, empathy, friendship, and understanding differences. We look forward to providing students with continued learning and experiences in these areas throughout the rest of the year! Since Valentine’s Day and the 100th day of school are approaching, look for information from your child’s teacher regarding any classroom activities taking place. Finally, we would like to congratulate, Mrs. Ash, Bartlett’s Teacher of the Year! Students, families and colleagues appreciate her continual dedication and her incredible drive to be a life-long learner that strives to do what is best for all stu-dents! Last fall, the Michigan Department of Education provid-

ed schools and districts with an M-STEP Communica-

tion Toolkit in preparation for the release of state, dis-

trict, and building Spring 2015 results. To continue the

Department’s commitment to support teachers, parents,

and students throughout this transition to higher expecta-

tions for all students, a newly developed video is now

available which summarizes the M-STEP and walks

viewers through how to read and interpret student scores

within the M-STEP Parent Report.

WHO: 3rd, 4th and 5th grade girls WHAT: Girls on the Run 2016 Sea-son WHEN: March 7th-May 20th on Monday & Wednesday from 3:30-5:00. A 5k event on May 15, 2016! WHERE: Bartlett Elementary School WHY: GOTR uses running to inspire and moti-vate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. GOTR teaches life skills through dynamic, con-versation-based lessons and running games. At the end of the season, our team will participate in a 5k event that gives the girls a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. COST: $150: Includes 10 week/20 lesson sea-son, 5k entry fee, GOTR t-shirt, GOTR water bottle and a healthy snack at every GOTR prac-tice. Scholarships are available on a first come, first serve basis to families in need! REGISTRATION: Early: December 7th-18th. General: December 19th-Februrary 15th. Late: February 16th-March 18th. Teaching Your Child to be Organized

Some children (adults too!) are naturally organized, but for others organization is a skill that must be taught.

Organizational skills are helpful for school success and when taught early will provide a strong foundation for

adolescence and adult life. Working on these skills at home can be fun when you do these simple activities:

Contingency Plans

Occasionally, school sys-tems have to send students home early due to weather conditions, power outages, boiler failure and so on. Although we try to avoid sending students home early, there have been times in the past and there will, no doubt, be times in the future when this action is necessary. Please discuss this possibility with your children, and devise a plan for them to follow. Your plan might in-volve going straight home and call-ing a parent at work. It might in-volve going to the neighbor’s home, if the neighbor agrees. It might in-volve a high school child staying at home with the younger children. Whatever plan is decided upon, make sure your children know it and follow it, for their safety and your peace of mind. Whenever possible, students at the elementary level will not be released unless a contact has been made with a parent, guardian, or other individual listed on their emergency card. Please continue to keep emergency contact information up to date for all students regardless

Cultures of Thinking Thinking made visible this month….

As part of our continual education about diversity, stu-

dents in Bartlett Buddies Care Club (B2C2) guided all

classrooms in learning and celebrating differences. Stu-

dents in 3rd-5th grade had the opportunity to use simula-

tions to engage in learning experiences like students with

reading, math and attention disabilities. Kindergarten

through second graders viewed images and took part in the

See-Think-Wonder Routine. B2C2 members lead stu-

dents in sharing what they saw, explaining what it made

them think and then ask questions about their wonderings.

Great thinking was shared and all students had wonderful

learning experience about diversity!

Keep a family calendar and encourage your child to write in their own activities-This also helps to teach time management and builds responsibility.

Introduce checklists-Even simple three step to do lists help to teach children to strategize tasks and manage their time.

Have your child do chores that require sorting and classifying-Tasks that require pre-planning, making lists and arranging teach organizational skills (Ex. sorting laundry, grocery shopping, putting away dishes, etc.).

Get ready for activities the night before-Laying out school clothes and preparing backpacks/lunches require preplanning and make the mornings easi-er.

Sort through school folders and your child’s back-pack together.

Cook or bake together-Cooking requires following directions, measuring, preplanning and time man-agement skills.

Praise your child’s efforts at being organized and

be patient as your child learns.
