About*Us*ECOMS!was!established!as! a! student! society!way!back! in!1949.!Originally! the! ‘Economics!

Students!Club’,! it!was! strictly! an!educationObased! society,! focusing!on! the!discussion! and!

study!of!economic!theory!and!its!application!in!the!real!world.*!

While!still!retaining!this!core!focus!of!supporting!students’!education!and!helping!to!foster!

Education*overview*Firstly!Congratulations,!you!made!it!into!UWA,!by!far!Western!Australia’s!best!university!for!

Business!students.!The!good!times!that!you!will!have!at!university!and!the!people!you!will!

Teaching*and*Learning*Committee*ECOMS! sends! representatives! to! attend! the!monthly!meetings! held! by! the! Teaching! and!

Learning!Committee.!This!committee!is!a!combination!of!the!University!management!staff,!

academic! teaching! staff! and!members!of! the! student!body.!The!committee!deals!with!all!

issues!related!to!teaching!and!learning,!such!as!unit!assessment,!teaching!practices!and!unit!

scheduling.!!

Guild*Education*Council*meetings*Representatives! from! ECOMS! also! attend! the!monthly! Guild! Education! Council,! which! is!

attended!by!all!of! the! faculty! societies!of! the!university.! The!purpose!of! the! council! is! to!

compare! and! evaluate! educational! practices! across! different! faculties! with! the! aim! of!

improving!the!overall!standard!of!education.!

*Business*School*Student*Advisory*Council*A!new! initiative! for!2012,! the!Business!School!Student!Advisory!Council! is! comprised!of!a!

diverse!range!of!students,!from!first!years!through!to!honour!students!studying!a!variety!of!

different!degree!structures.!The!aim!of!this!council!is!to!understand!the!issues!that!may!be!

affecting!you,!from!a!student’s!perspective!and!devise!solutions.!ECOMS!strongly!supports!

Mannkal*Economic*Education*Foundation*Essay*Competition*Mannkal! Economic! Education! Foundation! is! a! registered! nonOprofit! “think! tank”!

organisation!aimed!at!exploring!free!market!ideology.!!Over!the!past!few!years,!ECOMS!and!

Mannkal!have!worked!together!to!bring!students!an!opportunity!to!express!their!ideas!on!a!

variety!of! free!market! issues! via! an! essay! competition.! This! competition! gives! students! a!

chance! to! think! outside! the! standard! university! syllabus! and! at! the! same! time! be! in! the!

chance!to!win!loads!of!prize!money!!

**What*every*first*year*should*know*You*don’t*have*to*buy*all*of*your*textbooks*Most! of! them! you!won’t! need! and!will! regret! buying,! no!matter! how!much! the! lecturer!

thinks! it’s! the!best! thing!since!fairy!bread!(how!could!anything!be!better!than!fairy!bread!

anyway…).!It’s!a!UWA!requirement!that!all!required!textbooks!have!copies!available!at!the!

library,!so!you!never!need!to!buy!a!book!if!you!don’t!want!to.!

Watch*out*for*scaling*Scaling!is!a!bit!of!a!mysterious!entity!in!university!units,!if!a!unit!is!run!well!by!the!lecturer!

there!won’t!be!any,!but!keep!in!mind!that!aiming!for!50%!might!not!cut!it!if!it’s!not.*

Go*to*all*of*your*Tutorials*(and*prepare*for*them!)*ECOMS! sets! realistic! goals.! We! understand! most! people! won’t! want! to! go! to! all! their!

lectures! and! will! prefer! to! watch! them! online.! However,! in! most! business! school! units,!

tutorials! are! an! easy! 5O10%!of! your!marks! and!preparing! for! them!will! put! you! ahead!of!

your!lazy!colleagues.!It’s!not!hard!to!take!30O45!minutes!before!each!tutorial!to!revise!the!

lectures!O!so!do!it!*

Read*the*Unit*Outlines*Unit!outlines!are!all!online!now,!so!you!won’t!be!given!one!automatically.!Be!sure!to!go!and!

find!it!though!because!it’ll!give!a!good!idea!of!the!weighting!of!all!the!assessments!(in!turn!

allowing!you!to!decide!which!ones!not!to!do).!!It!will!also!tell!you!if!you!have!assignments!

and!their!due!dates.*

Keep*track*of*Due*Dates*Assignments!with!due!dates!that!are!a!month!away!don’t!seem!so!urgent.!!However!when!it!

gets!closer!and!you!realise!that!every!unit!has!an!assignment!or!test!in!that!same!week,!

that’s!when!the!panic!sets!in.!!Start!planning!early!and!don’t!let!due!dates!creep!up!on!you.*

*Don’t*be*a*hermit;*Study*at*Uni,*not*at*home*While!we!understand!that!many!of!you!may!think!you!study!better!at!home,!often!the!best!

thing!to!do!is!to!get!a!few!friends!together!and!go!to!one!of!the!collaborative!areas!within!

the!big!libraries!on!campus.!If!you’re!all!doing!the!same!unit,!your!understanding!of!the!

coursework!should!improve!as!you!discuss!any!of!the!concepts!contained!in!lectures.!It’s!

also!a!great!way!to!get!closer!to!the!people!you’re!going!to!be!spending!quite!a!lot!of!time!

Williams!is!friendly,!approachable,!and!very!good!at!explaining!all!the!concepts.!His!funny!

jokes!and!overall!style!certainly!makes!this!unit!even!more!enjoyable.!The!tutes!are!easy!to!

do!if!you!have!attended!the!lectures!and!if!you!have!the!textbook!on!hand.!The!assignment!

is! fairly! straightforward! to!understand!what! is! required,! but! is! not! necessarily! so! easy! to!

actually! complete.! The! final! exam! has! a! question! on! each! major! topic! in! the! unit,! so! I!

suggest!that!you!make!summary!notes!on!each!topic!before!the!exam.!As!for!the!specific!

sections!of!the!unit,!game!theory!and!market!failure!were!among!my!favourites,!but!watch!

unit!was!that!it!was!very!heavily!oriented!towards!the!theory!side!of!economics,!going!into!

more!depth!on!such!topics!as!the!bond!market!and!exchange!rates.!I!found!the!stuff!on!the!

Global!Financial!Crisis!and!European!debt!crisis!to!be!especially!intriguing!(probably!helped!

that! the! news! about! the! Greek! crisis! breaking! just! as! we! were! about! to! learn! about!

government!debt,!but!moving!on).!!A!cautionary!note!though!O!you!will!need!to!learn!a!lot!

of!new!graphs,!but!most!are!quite!simple!once!you!get!the!theory!behind!them.!Once!you!

understand! the! graphs,! everything! else! mostly! just! falls! into! place! by! itself.! Professor!

Crompton!is!a!great!lecturer!and!is!more!than!happy!to!answer!any!questions!you!have!(his!

lecture! notes! are! really! good! too).! Just! remember! to! start! the! assignment(s)! early! in!

lulls! you! into! a! false! sense!of! security,! as! you! think! you! know! the!basics! of! the! unit! and!

enough!to!pass,!and!then!the!exam! is!always!harder! than!you!think! it! is!going!to!be.!The!

textbook!isn’t!very!much!help!either,!as!the!unit!is!only!loosely!written!around!its!contents!

and! navigating! through! it! is! difficult.! Quant! makes! you! learn! things! like! multiOderivative!

calculus!and!other!Maths!with!long,!frightening!names!that!you!will!probably!only!need!to!

Australian!Economic!History! is!the!semester!two!option!available!to!you!to!do!a!firstOyear!

economic! history! unit.! Aside! from! the! obvious! differences! in! subject! material,! the! main!

distinguishing! factor! between! the! two! firstOyear! economic! history! units! is! that! while!

ECON1105! was! quite! economics! theoryOintensive,! this! unit! is! very! historyOintensive,!

focusing! on! the! period! between! the! First! Fleet’s! arrival! in! 1788! to!Australia! in! the!Great!

Depression.! Really! it’s! almost! like! a! modern! history! class,! except! that! a! much! higher!

standard!of!economic!analysis!is!expected.!That!said,!you!will!definitely!have!an!advantage!

if!you’ve!studied!Year!11!and/or!Year!12!modern!history!(even!more!so!if!one!of!your!units!

was!an!Australian!history!one).!

There!were!a!couple!of!slight!negatives!with!the!unit,!such!as!the!2,500Oword!major!essay!

due!in!a!week!after!your!tutorial!presentation!on!the!same!subject,!and!the!lecture!slides!

are!very!writingOintensive.!Nevertheless,!I!found!the!unit!to!be!interesting!and!overall!great!

fun,! likely! in! no! small! part! because! of! the! very! engaging! teaching! style! of! Professor!

McClure,!who!teaches!this!unit,!as!well!as!the!only!remaining!higherOlevel!economic!history!

unit.!An!additional!plus!for!the!unit!is!that!the!‘textbook’!(“Tyranny!of!Distance”!by!Geoffrey!

Blainey)!reads!a!lot!more!like!a!novel!than!a!textbook.!

The! Bottom! Line:! I! highly! recommend! this! unit;! it! is! challenging,! but! I! still! thoroughly!

and!loathed!as!stories!of!ridiculous!fail!rates!rattled!all!business!students.!Now,!however,!it!

seems!the!business!school! is!aiming!to! improve!the!accessibility!of!the!finance!degree!for!

you!newbies.! If! it’s!anything! like! it!has!been! in! the!past!–! the!unit! is!good.! It!gives!you!a!

grounding! of! the!major! ways! in! which! firms! and! individuals! value! and! determine! future!

possible!cash!flows.!You!learn!how!most!types!of!bonds!work,!how!equity!and!the!issuance!

of!dividends!affect! stock!prices!and!a!whole!host!of!other!very!useful! aspects!of! finance.!

The!lecturers!often!change!quite!a!lot,!however,!most!are!of!a!high!quality!and!speak!with!

clarity!and!concision.!They!are!also!pretty!solid!with!returning!emails!and!offering!support.!

This!is!a!unit!you!will!almost!definitely!have!to!buy!a!textbook,!as!most!of!the!tutorial!and!

very!advantageous!position!with!this!unit,!as!a!lot!of!the!first!part!of!the!course!is!basically!

going!over! stuff! like! statutory! interpretation!and! the! structure!of!Australia’s! legal! system!

(Washminster!system,!doctrine!of!precedent,!the!court!hierarchy,!etc).!From!there,!the!unit!

then! looks! at! tort! law,! focusing! on! negligence! and! the! intricacies! of! the! duty! of! care!

principle.! In! my! opinion! though,! it! is! the! second! part! of! the! course! that! was! the! most!

interesting!O!namely!product! liability!and!contract! law,!which!can!be!especially!valuable! if!

you!need!to!deal!with!demanding!replacements!for!faulty!products!and!the!like.!

However,!regardless!of!what!part!of!the!unit!you!are!doing!at!the!time,!Peter!Sinden's!sense!

of!humour!is!easily!the!highlight!O!not!necessarily!because!the!subject!matter!is!boring,!but!

just!because!of!his!very!engaging!and!effective!teaching!style,!not!to!mention!his!myriad!of!

available!in!the!Reid!Library!it!is!much!easier!to!just!go!to!the!lectures!and!watch!them!and!

you!have!to!watch!them.!!The!MidOsemester!questions!are!very!specific!and!usually!appear!

On!a!personal!level,!I!did!not!like!STAT1520...but!then,!I!don’t!like!any!maths!really.!‘Gopal’,!

the!lecturer!for!this!unit,!has!quite!a!thick!accent!that!often!made!it!difficult!to!hear!what!

he!was!actually!saying!(though!he!isn’t!as!bad!as!some!of!the!other!lecturers).!However,!he!

mostly!makes!up!for!this!by!providing!excellent!lecture!notes!and!he!goes!over!most!things!

at! least! twice!and!demonstrates!what!he! is!doing!on!the! lecture!slides,!so!eventually!you!

can!figure!out!what!he’s!saying.!Unfortunately,!there!are!four!(yes,!four!)!lectures!a!week,!

but!at!least!it!means!you!shouldn’t!be!rushing!through!unit!topics!like!you!do!in!some!other!
