President’s Beat – Earl PercyWhy are only 5% of Smolts returning?

20 years ago out of 100 smolts leaving the rivers intheUKasmanyas25wouldreturntotheriverasadultsalmontospawnandfurtherthedevelopmentofthespecies.Today,asfewas5willreturn.Thisphenomenon,invariousdegrees,isbeingexperiencedaroundtheNorthAtlantic.The Atlantic Salmon Trust has done some great workoverthelast50yearsbutwenowhavetoworkwithagreaterlevelofurgencyandfindoutwhatishappeningoutatsea.

Aspartofour50thCelebrationsweareholdingascientificsymposiumandbringingscientists,anglers and statisticians together to further a co-ordinated approach to research into The Wild AtlanticSalmonintheMarineEnvironment.Thisresearchistobewelcomedbutitisexpensive.TopreservethisamazingfishforfuturegenerationsweneedresourcesandIwouldaskforeveryonewhoisinterestedinAtlanticSalmontohelpinanywaytheycan.

Our President, George Percy, has asked the key question - Why are less than 5% of smolts leaving our rivers returning as adult salmon?Ifwecanunderstandmoreaboutthepressurepoints during a salmon’s long journey out to the Atlanticfeedinggroundsandback,wecantrytoimplementmanagementsolutionsthatcanhelp.For 50 years, the AST have successfully spent time, money and expertise identifying and addressing someofthemostimportantfreshwaterproblems.Wenowwanttomovefurtherafieldandlookatimpactsinthetidalzoneandtheopenocean.Likeanysuccessfulorganisation,itisdowntotheteamtodeliverontheobjectives.MyjobasChairman is largely to make sure the team is up to the job and the funds are in place to enable our work.

The Board of Trustees–areagroupof10individualswitharange of skill sets that are motivated to deliver the Trusts objectives.Theygivetheirtimeforfree,setthestrategyandensureeveryPounddonatediswiselyspent.The Honorary Scientific Advisory Panel – A carefully selected groupofscientistswhoreviewandvalidatetheresearchprogramme of the Trust to ensure that projects are viable beforetheyarecommissionedandwrittenupwhentheyarecompleted.The Executive Management Team – The organisation is led by Chief Executive, Sarah Bayley Slater and the Science ResearchbyProfessorKenWhelan.Theirjobistodeliveron the strategy as set by the Trustees and to have their workreviewedbytheHSAP.ThenewlyfocussedAtlanticSalmonTrusthassetitselfaverychallengingobjective.The50thanniversaryGalaCelebrationsareverymuchalaunchpadforthiswork.Weneedyourhelp.

TheASTisusingthesignificantmilestoneofit’s50thAnniversarytoraiseawarenessoftheplightofthewildAtlanticsalmonanddrawfocusonthequestion:Whyareasfewas5%ofsmoltsleavingourrivers returning as adult salmon?The AST’s aim is to gather the information to improve our understanding of the causesofthisdecline.Itispossibletomakeassumptionsbutactualquantifieddataandevidenceoftheproblemsallowsustoworkoutthemosteffectivesolutions.Tooperatewithinadefinedstrategyandtoco-ordinate our research around the Atlantic wearedevelopingTheSuspectsModelwhichourResearchDirectordescribesonpage7.To assess the impact of some of the Likely Suspects that could be contributing towardsthesalmonsdeclinetheASTarefocussingon3keyareas:

Suspect 1: “Do smolts die in large quantities in the lower river and coastal zone and, if so, why?”

Project: Acoustic Telemetry TrackingTogetaclearunderstandingofwhatis happening to smolts during their migration the AST is developing a Tracking Programme for smolts, to monitor their progresstowardstheopenocean.Dr.MattNewtonhasjustbeenappointedasAcoustic Tracking project Co-ordinator for theAST.

Suspect 2: “What are the effects of the pelagic fishing fleet on salmon smolts at sea?”

Project: Environmental DNA (eDNA ) Understanding pelagic by-catch For some time there has been concern about the level of accidental killing of salmon by pelagic vessels at sea during their migration from and to their rivers of origin.

Using environmental DNA (eDNA), the AST and University College Dublin are running an innovative project to develop and pilot a pioneering technique to assess the presence or absence of salmon DNA fragmentsonboardfishingboats.

Suspect 3: ”How can we reduce the impacts of salmon aquaculture?”

Project: To work with the Aquaculture industry to reduce its effect on migrating wild salmon and sea trout.Inlightoftherecentscientificinformationon the impacts of Aquaculture the AST has revised and updated its positioning statementonsalmonaquaculture.Wearefindingwaystourgentlyandpositivelymoveforwardthedialoguewiththefishfarming industry and Government so as to alterfishfarmmanagementpracticesandimproveconditionsforwildsalmonandseatrout.

Chief Executive’s Take The problems facing salmon and sea trout inthemarineenvironmentaresignificantand it requires focus, energy, determination and strong partnerships to put together aprogramwhichaddressestheissuesatsea.Ouraimis,overthenext10years,to understand the reasons for mortality in migrating salmon and sea trout and through this understanding develop the toolsandstrategiestoaddressthem.TofindoutmoreabouttheAST’sprojectsandtheresearchithasfundedpleasevisit:www.atlanticsalmontrust.org

Atlantic Salmon Dying at Sea – The Likely Suspects

It’s hard to believe that only a decade agowewerepreparingtomakeourfirstconcertedinternationaleffortstofollowwildsalmonacrosstheAtlantic,tolearnmore about migration and distribution patterns and to begin the process of identifyingwhereandwhyoursalmonaredyingatsea.TheAtlanticSalmonTrustwastotheforeinprovidingfunding for the initiative and as the story of salmon at sea unfolded the AST has, through its funding of research, becomemoreandmoreinvolvedwiththe mysteries surrounding the losses of salmonintheocean.A decade of research has revealed that a range of likely suspects may be impacting on migrating smolts and post-smolts.Studiesonthegrowth,conditionand survival of salmon at sea indicated alinkwithclimatechange,particularlythewarmingofthesurfacelayersoftheoceans, the very environment through whichyoungsalmonorsmolts,migratenorthwardstowardstheirfeedinggrounds.TheSALSEAprojectidentifiedpost-smolts captured at sea to their river of origin and led to the concept of anannualconveyerbeltofnorthward

migratingsmolts.Alongthisroute,thenumber of post-smolts declines due to cumulative effects of natural mortality aswellasanyman-madeinfluences,suchasfishingmortalityintheformofby-catch.WiththehelpofProfessorWalterCrozierandthroughcollaborationwithour partners around the Atlantic, the AST is currently developing the concept of a mathematical “likely suspects” model to seek to quantify the relative (and absolute) importance of each of thecandidatemortalityfactors;whereexactly are most of the smolts dying and whereshouldweconcentrateoureffortsin ensuring that the maximum number ofsmoltsreachthefeedinggrounds.

Our only means of off-setting high seas mortalityisboostingthenumbersofwildsmoltsandpost-smoltssurvivingatsea.Thelessonwemustlearnisthatman’sinfluencecananddoeshaveanimpactonthesestrugglingpopulations.Management actions have historically takenplaceinfreshwater,buttheemphasisisnowmovingtothecoastalzoneandtheopenocean.ThisisinlinewiththethreeprojectsourChief Executive Sarah Bayley Slater hasdescribedonthepreviouspage.The current research objective is tocommissionprojectswhichareguidedbytheSuspectsModel.Thiswillthenfeedbackintothemodelandprovideuswithafoundationfor future research, particularly on factorswheremanagementactioncanmakeadifference.ASTbelievesthat our challenge is to reduce or at least mitigate the man-made pressures currently on the populations at risk so as to give them time and space to adapt andtorecover.Anewandexcitingphase of research on salmon at sea is abouttounfold.

AcousticTracking–Howyoucanhelptrackingsmolts.

Acoustic Tracking is one of the Atlantic Salmon Trust’s keyscienceprojects.WithfundingfromtheFishmongers’Company, the Trust has recently employed a project Co-ordinator–Dr.MattNewton.

Thebackbonetoanytrackingstudy,arethetags(£350each),attachedtothefishandreceivers(£4,000each),whichdetectthefishastheymigratethroughtheriversystems.Vemco, one of the manufacturers of tracking equipment, have donatedtotheASTasinglereceiver.Weurgentlyneedtobuild on this generous gift and to purchase 50 tags costing £17,500.ThiswouldenabletheASTtostartbuildingabankofequipment to support a project(s) uncovering the behaviour of migratingsalmonids.

The Eriskay pony is a small pony of 12/13 handshigh.Surefooted,intelligentanddocile, they roam the Island of Eriskay ontheWestCoastofScotland.It is said the Little Grey Palfrey that Robert the Bruce rode at the Battle of BannockBurnin1314wasfromEriskaystock.BeforemotorsarrivedtheywouldcarrypeattotheirownersCrofts.Inmore recent times, they have come intotheirownasexcellentchildren’sridingponiesbeingnarrowandcalmintemperament.Salar is one of the same, being a gelding 2yearsold,hehasbeenwellhandled,used to a halter and a horse trailer, but notasyetasaddleandbridle.Alltheseponies are born completely black and turnwhitebeforetheyare3yearsold.ThewinningbidderandthedonorwilldiscusshowtogetSalarfromEriskaytotheir home, he is presently still on the island!
