NEWS RELEASE October 25, 2017

The Jockey Club Releases 2017 Report of Mares Bred Statistics

The Jockey Club today released Report of Mares Bred (RMB) statistics for the 2017 breeding season. Based on RMBs received through October 17, 2017, The Jockey Club reports that 1,342 stallions covered 31,863 mares in North America during 2017.

Based upon historical reporting trends, The Jockey Club esti-mates an additional 2,000 to 3,000 mares will be reported as bred during the 2017 breeding season.

The number of stallions declined 5.7% from the 1,423 reported at this time in 2016, and the number of mares bred decreased 5.6% from the 33,746 reported last year. The number of stallions cover-ing 125 or more mares decreased from 64 in 2016 to 60 in 2017.

Further book size analysis shows a 3.3% decrease in the number of mares bred to stallions with a book size of 125 or more in 2017 when compared to 2016 as reported at this time last year; a 13.0% decrease in mares bred to stallions with a book size be-tween 100 and 124; a 27.4% decrease in mares bred to stallions with a book size between 75 and 99; a 11.5% decrease in mares bred to stallions with a book size between 50 and 74; a 14.9% increase in mares bred to stallions with a book size between 25 and 49; and a 4.7% decrease in mares bred to stallions with a book size fewer than 25.

When comparing statistics based on reports received through the same day (October 17) from previous breeding seasons, the per-centage of broodmares covered by large book size (125 or more) stallions increased from 19.3% in 2013 to approximately 29% in 2015 where it has remained over the past three seasons.

The proportion of stallions with book sizes of 125 or more mares grew from 2.6% in 2013 to 4.5% in 2015. It has remained con-stant at that rate over the past three breeding seasons.

RMB statistics for all reported stallions in 2017 are available through the Fact Book section of The Jockey Club’s website at jockeyclub.com.

The stallion Into Mischief led all stallions with 235 mares bred in 2017. Rounding out the top five by number of RMBs were Dialed In, 231; American Pharoah, 214; Uncle Mo, 204; and, Bodemeis-ter, 192.

Kentucky traditionally leads North America in Thoroughbred breeding activity. During 2017, Kentucky’s 229 reported stallions covered 17,275 mares, or 54.2% of all of the mares reported bred in North America. The number of mares bred to Kentucky stal-lions decreased 2.7% percent compared with the 17,750 report-ed at this time last year.

Of the top 10 states and provinces by number of mares reported bred in 2017, Ontario, Pennsylvania and Indiana stallions cov-ered more mares in 2017 than in 2016, as reported at this time last year. The table to the right shows the top 10 states and provinces ranked by number of mares reported bred in 2017 plus Arkansas’ numbers:

STATE/PROVINCE 2016 2017 Pct. 2016 2017 Stallions Stallions Change Mares Mares Bred Bred

Kentucky 227 229 .88% 17,570 17,725

New Mexico 72 58 -19.44% 692 605

Pennsylvania 41 36 -12.20% 489 563

Indiana 48 59 22.92% 386 554

ARKANSAS 36 39 7.69% 409 391 NOTE: Arkansas lists 49 stallions that will stand in Arkansas for 2018 in the 2018 Directory, but if history repeats, not all listed as standing will have breedings. The total number of mares that were bred in Arkansas aren’t quite up there with Pennsylvania, but look at Indiana in 2016. If every Arkansas stallion o wner had submitted their Report of Mares Bred to The Jockey Club timely (by August 1) Arkansas would have been the one listed as #10 in the above rankings in 2016, not Indiana. Indiana had a 22.92% increase from 2016 to 2017; Arkansas had a 7.69% increase. Arkansas’ number shown above for 2017 is not accurate, a few reports have not been received, but even so, 2017 total numbers still won’t reach Indiana’s! Let’s see what 2018 brings!!!!!

OBITUARIES

GARY W. WEIR - 75, of North Little Rock died peacefully in his home October 4th after a long ill-ness. His love for horses led him to create and produce the television horseracing replay show, “The Oaklawn Report,” which aired for 18 years, providing Arkansas horsemen and horse enthusiasts withthe recap of Oaklawn Park’s live meet racing on Arkansas television KARK, Channel 4.

As a horse enthusiast himself, Gary was an excellent handicapper. He also bred, owned and raced thoroughbred horses individually and in partnerships. He attended the Kentucky Derby for more than 15 years and hosted years of Kentucky Derby bus excursions to that annual event. The son of Tommy L. and Eva Jane Weir, Gary was born in Russellville, Arkansas in 1941. He attended Russellville schools, but graduated from Benton High School in 1959, and went on to attend Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway. His first job as disc jockey “John Scott” was at radio station KXLR. In 1964, at age 23, he was hired as a station announcer, weatherman and worked in sales at KATV Channel 7 in Little Rock. In addition to his regular jobs at the TV station, in 1966 he was chosen by then station Manager Bob Doubleday to portray the character, Bozo the Clown; and what started out as a one-year contract turned into a 25 year career. During his Bozo career, Gary won his way into the hearts of thousands of children all over Arkansas who at-tended or watched his weekday TV show, “Bozo’s Big Top” which was taped live at Channel 7. Some of Bozo’s more noted sayings were, “Do You Walk to School or Carry Your Lunch?” and “How Smart is Your Mother, 100 or 45?” During his years as Bozo, Gary received numerous honors and commendations, including “Bozo Day in Arkansas.” He also received proclamations from Governors David Pryor and Bill Clinton, an engraved Bozo handprint on downtown Little Rock’s Walk of Fame, and he was named to the “Arkansas Entertainer’s Hall of Fame” in 2013. After retiring from Bozo in 1991, Gary took on a new clown identity as “Candy the Clown” for his new show, “Clown-town, USA,” which aired for 13 years in Arkansas and Mississippi. It was during this era of his life that he created and produced “The Oaklawn Report.” In June of 2012, Gary and his wife Linda created and produced “The Good Ole Daze,” a television dance show featuring music for dancers age 50 and over. The “Good Ole Daze” was Gary’s last project before suffering a stroke in 2013. He was a member of Park Hill Baptist Church in North Little Rock for more than 30 years. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Tommy and Eva Jane Weir, and his brother Randy Weir. He is survived by his wife and partner of 13 years, Linda Gillam Weir; his loving daughters, Amanda “Mandy” (Lloyd) Warford of North Little Rock; Camilla “Cami” Weir of New Orleans, Louisiana; grandsons, Jacob and Ryan Lowther of Sarasota, Florida and Noah Warford of North Little Rock. He is also survived by his step children, Eva McKinney (Shelly), Jackie Murry (Charles) and Derek Gunter and their families; special lifelong friends, Donny Ketcheside, Jimmy Sparks and Paul Richman of Russellville and Mona Kay Ingram of Little Rock. In addition to his family, Gary leaves behind many friends and colleagues. He deeply valued and cherished these relationships through the years. The family said their prayer was that he’d be remembered for his love of people and his passion for horseracing and handicapping; but mostly for his sense of humor, his friend-liness, generosity, and for 25 years of bringing joy, laughter and inspiration to so many as Arkansas’ “Bozo The Clown.” Gary’s absence had been felt for the past four plus years following his stroke. Our condolences are with his wife, daughters, family, friends and the many little boys and girls that grew up meeting, knowing and idolizing him as Arkansas’ Bozo!

(Continued from page 7)

• You have to include detailed markings for your foal’s identification. To assist you with doing this accurately, place your cursor in the center of the top of your online page. You will see four drop down columns. In the column enti-tled “Register My Foal”, (second from the left) click on the line “How to ID a Thoroughbred.” This item will walk you through, step by step, on how to identify and write markings. It has pictures that you can access just by clicking on the underlined item. It’s pretty much fool proof.

• Below the “How to ID a Thoroughbred” you will find “Tips on Photographs” that is very helpful in submitting pho-tographs that won’t be rejected. It’s better to send a few more than not enough. Gray or Roan horses require photographs of their night eyes, which is addressed in the Identification section you used to write the markings.

• Experiment, look around a little and familiarize yourself with this site. It is beneficial and a life saver, to say it mildly.• After you have completed the Application, the markings, the photograph and paid the registration fee, you can

go back to the section in a few days that was mentioned earlier, “Check Registration Status” to see that it’s shown as received, when it’s completed, etc. or if there is anything more they are going to require.

• The Service Certificate from the Stallion owner will be given to you and you will have to provide it to The Jockey Club. The best way, however, is to ask the stallion owner or agent to release the Service Certificate online. That is the most accurate and fastest way to accomplish that part of the foal’s registration.

• ”Additionally, you will need to name your foal by February 1st of the its 2 year old year. If you wait until after that date, you will be assessed a naming fee. To submit a name, on the page you get after you sign in there is a green area entitled “Naming.” Click on “Submit a Name” and follow the instructions for submitting the name you have chosen. I personally prefer to only submit one name at a time, as I have found if you send more than one, they just pick one, it doesn’t matter if it was your first, second or third choice. If the name submitted is declined, you can send in another name to see if it is approved. Do remember, once a name has been submitted for a foal and de-clined, you will not be charged a naming fee if you wait until after the February 1st deadline of the 2 year old year.

If you have urgent questions or problems navigating within their Interactive Registration site, you can always call The Jockey Club at 1-800-444-8521 ... Ask for the Interactive Registry Department.

A Little Funny out of Australia!

"When my husband and I arrived at a car dealer to pick up our car, we were told the keys had been locked in it. We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver's side door. As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked. 'Hey,' I announced to the technician, 'it's open!'. His reply, 'I know - I already done that side'.It happened at the FORD dealership Dubbo.

A Message from our President: I just started feeding more hay lately. I’m missing that green grass already.

In my last letter I wrote about the problem grasses in my pastures. I bought a Weed Wiper. It’s built in North Arkansas and I think it’s going to work. My pastures were already getting dry when I used it, so the good grass didn’t have enough time or enough rain to surpass the grass that was killed. I’ll find out more about the long term effects next year.

I don’t mean to bore you writing or talking about grass, but if you don’t have it, you are haying and feeding all of the time. Horses do much better on good pastures and feed than they do on hay and feed.

I’m looking forward to Oaklawn’s 2018 meet. All that good horse racing and the good purses to go with it! I’m also anxious to see the new barns and improvements in the club house also.

See you soon, Bill McDowell, President

FROM THE ATBHA OFFICE I do believe the summer months are behind us! In that I am not a winter person, probably in the minority, so I hate seeing the warm weather end. I did, however, get to enjoy the beautiful fall colors on a recent drive to northern Arkansas, specifically to Big Cedar Lodge, for a outside fall sunset wedding at Top of the Rock. The view and colors in areas on the drive up, around the Lodge and at the Top of the Rock ... Absolutely Beautiful ... Just Breathtaking! Actually, that was my first visit to Big Cedar Lodge. If you haven’t been there ... you certainly need to put it on your bucket list! I would highly recommend a fall visit, however I can’t imagine it not being beautiful any time of year. They say it’s packed year round. There are so many activities for couples, family and children. Plus, Branson’s shows and shopping are a mere drive up the road or across the lake ... only a few minutes away.

The 2018 Stallion & Farm Directory has now been delivered to the printer! [Pretend I typed a smiley face here!!!!] Now to get the newsletter done and all of the year-end registrations that have already started rolling in. Please do not wait until the last day to bring in your registrations. The December 31st deadline just hap-pens to fall on a Sunday this year. The ATBHA office is not open on Friday afternoons, nor will it be open Sat-urday, December 30th or Sunday, the 31st. Plan accordingly. Your registrations just have to be postmarked by 12/31/17 so you can always mail them on Saturday to get the postmark for the last mail day of the year.

IMPORTANT:

Send in your 2017 Arkansas-bred foal registrations!!! Do not wait until the last month of the year and chance something missing which won’t allow you to complete the registration before the December 31st dead-line. Registration fees increase from $40 to $200 for ATBHA members if you complete 2017 foal registrations after December 31, 2017. Broodmare registrations increase from $50 to $500. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!!!!

ALSO ..... Remember to get The Jockey Club Certificates of all Registered Arkansas-breds stamped BEFORE giving them to your trainer or to the Racing Secretary’s office if they will be running at Oaklawn in 2018.
