My fellow anglers and friends,

Greetings to all. We at The Asian Angler are constantly Trying to improve. We have been getting a lot of feed-back from readers with regards to being not very frien-dly to moblie devices. So we have been testing various formats that will be suitable for mobile devices and it appears that no one for-mat can be used for all mobile systems. We are still testing but for now, with this issue our mobile magazine is a bit different with new parameters which we foud to be the best currently. We hope you like it.

In this issue we tested a few new fishing rods the likes of the Abu Garcia Salty Stage Jig Craft, Zen X EA Slow Twitch and Metal Mayhem which are both su-perb rods. We also tried to force the VFOX pliers to rust with a salt spray test and the results are quite surprising.

In this issue we continue with the series on bearings in the Knowledge Wise section, discussing hybrid bearings. In the Skill Enhancers we continue with the series on spoon fishing techniques, and this time we take a look at jigging your spoons. Most anglers would not have thought of this but it works.

Well, I hope you enjoy this issue and do share The Asian Angler with your friends too. The more readers we have the longer we can stay free. Oh yes! we are looking at doing something new and crazy with regards to fishing. Should you be interested to find out more or join us for this project, do send me an email at [email protected] or send me a private message on our Face-book.

Thank you and happy fishing.

Cheers,PhilEditor In Chief

When Zen Met Extreme

When Zen Met Extreme

If you think that Zen + Extreme = super peaceful-ness or extreme Zen, you are wrong. Bringing Zen and Extreme together brought about a fishing rod that will rock your boat heavy metal style of which is as what metal usually is; rebellious, loud, wild, crazy, and certainly not for the timid hearted. What’s a word for all hell breaking loose? Oh yes, Mayhem. Welcome to Metal Mayhem Extreme style.

a Few Decibels above louD

Inspiration comes in different forms. We’ve tested this rod in our lab but the first article I wrote was drier than saw-dust. I was banging my head to Drag-onforce when the Zagan Metal May-hem by Zen X EA rod came into my head. It is by no means and elegant rod. Far from it. It is a seriously wild, tough, hard rocking rod with carbon X wrap and an unusual kind of red.

Those who know Extreme Angler built rods will know that Kenny (custom rod builder) knows what he is doing and his rods have been catching giants in many countries. The Metal Mayhem is one of his creations. With it comes a giant slaughtering powerful blank and well balanced rod.

consistent Power

To ensure a consistent power range, the Metal Mayhem comes in an offset joint or what is more commonly known as butt joint in laymen terms. If you’ve not heard of this term before, it simply means a two piece type rod with the joint being at the fore handle or grip.

Quality coMPonentsWhen it comes down to components it makes sense only to use high quality components on a giant slayer. Would you go into battle with fire breathing dragon armed with a sword bought at Toys R Us? The Metal Mayhem comes with high quality EVA grips, Fuji DPS reel seat, and Fuji K Guides. That will give you more confidence to slay the giants of the sea.

On our first lab test (see May 2015 issue) we managed to hit the claimed 10kg max drag really easily. But this rod is made to manage a line weight of 40lb (18kg). So we headed back to the lab and tortured it some more. With a consistent power range we managed to hit slightly over 40lb pressure.

Casting AbilitiesUsing half a palm size fish as bait, we managed to get it a very good distance. I was amazed by how easy it was to cast out the baits especially for a rod with a stiffer tip made to slay giants. Every cast got a good distance.

brute battle ManageMent

I started with a 30lb leader and it burst twice since we were fishing with very heavy drag having cast quite close to under-water the pillars of the restaurant. When I finally changed to the 60lb leader the tug of war was full on.

Page 23: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Having a line rating of 40lb I decided to see how much “40lb” this heavy metal monster slayer can handle. We managed to drag two fighters out of the danger zone with the Metal May-hem holding its ground. Damn, this rod is freaking amazing.

The Zagan Metal Mayhem by Zen X EA is a tough fighting, well built, and an amazing rod with consistent power delivery. If you’ve been bullied by the giants, its perhaps time you be-come the bully and unleash Metal Mayhem.

War With Monsters

I am sure that you’ve heard of the term “to not bring a knife to a gun fight.” Wise words indeed. Thus when we started a war in the waters of Pekan (coastal town on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia) we brought a worthy ally, the Penn Warmonger Inshore.

Test InformationTesting Grounds: Pekan Series: Warmonger InshoreModel: PWIS702MHALength: 7’Lure Wt.: 15-50gLine Wt.: 15lb - 30lbConfiguration: 2 pieces

War With Monsters Dark Green Powerhouse

The Warmonger Inshore is a powerhouse with lots of power. It comes in dark British racing green, with black, silver, and metallic blue guide windings. Right after its fore EVA grip sites a silver winding check that looks somewhat like the outsides of a jet engine’s thrust output nozzle.

The Warmonger Inshore’s blank comes with spiral carbon wrap with the butt sec-tion getting an additional X or criss-cross winding design for additional toughness or rather rigidity. Cosmetics wise, it looks good too with a subtle show of Xs.

Back at our lab we were having a dra-matic time pressure testing the Warmon-ger Inshore. It really proved itself to be a warmonger looking for a fight with al-most everyone. First it almost poked one of our testers in the errr... area between his legs. ALMOST. Then is almost tore my right ear off just slightly missing the helmet I had on my head as the leader line used broke. I felt the wind in my ear.

Anyway, the Warmonger Inshore we tested has a tip rated at 15lb and a butt section rated 30lb. The first try ended with a burst leader. On the second at-tempt with a new leader line installed, we managed to push it close to 32lb with some crackle and no more pops. It did 2lb above the rated 30lb.

The field test was done much earlier on the prototype Warmonger Inshore. The model released (as in this article) has had its EVA changed to a sleeker design, with added niceties, and an enhance-ment to the blank (wrap). During the test the prototype fought and won, being the bully and warlord landing 4 very good sized diamond trevallies with the largest being 9kg.

A no frills powerhouse of a rod made to manage hard fighting fishes. The Penn Warmonger Inshore’s price is also decent. This makes it a pow-erhouse that will not burn a hole in one’s pocket.

What does Darth Vader do when he is not shooting Star Wars? I don’t know but if he were to be an angler, the Zagan Slow Twitch By Zen X EA would be his alterna-tive to the light sabre. The Zen X EA Zagan Slow Twitch is not just a tool for catching fish. It is a weapon.

Zagan Slow Twitch By Zen X EA

43

Page 44: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Old Vs. New

The Zen X EA Zagan Slow Twitch is the lat-est Slow Twitch series rod in the Zen Zagan family; this one being a collaboration between Zen Zagan and Extreme Anglers. Looking at the two, there are some differences.

Page 45: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Configuration

The new Slow Twitch is a one piece rod whereas the older one is a two piece offset jointed rod or butt joint. Although offset jointed rods are pretty good when it comes to power and curve consistency, a one piece rod is usually better since there are no joints.

45

Page 46: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Guide Sizes

Although both rods use Fuji guides and both have the same number of guides, the guides on the older one is bigger and with that I mean the huge stripper guide (one size bigger) on the older model. This gives it the odder less sleek look and slightly heavier weight.

Page 47: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Stiffness

Using smaller guides also calls for a realignment of guide spacing. The newer one with the smaller strip-per guides have got more of its guides pushed forward since the smaller stripper guide is suited further front; this increased the stiffness of the rod in favour of the new model.

Both new and old Slow Twitch rods come with wraps. The old one comes with the spi-ral carbon wrap (nothing to do with guides) and the new one comes with the carbon X wrap of which adds to rigidity and better toughness.

Page 49: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The new Slow Twitch is lighter than the old-er one by 21 grams. The fat has probably been trimmed at the stripper guide, EVA handles with the new one flashing a slim-mer looking more ergonomically designed handle, and maybe a little within the blank construction (cannot be certain as this is usually shrouded in secrecy).

LAB TESTEquipment UsedReel: Okuma Azores Z65SLines: Berkley Fireline Fused 30lbPressure Achieved: 30.5lb

In our previous lab test for the introduction article we easily pushed the Slow Twitch to 8.9kg as 8kg is its recommended max drag pressure. However, it does have a line rating of 30lb and thus we decided to see if it can touch 30lb. With a good amount of effort we managed to touch 30.5lb and we called it quits as the rod was really quite fatigued. Power delivery is consistent.

Casting AbilitiesThe Slow Twitch cast really well for a jigging rod sending baits to very good distances. This is good especially when there is a need to cast jigs. I felt very much in contact with the tip dur-ing the cast which gives for better casting control.

Battle Capabilities

Remember when I equated this rod to Darth Vader’s light sa-bre? Well, this new Slow Twitch is certainly a powerful rod. During the fight one can feel the force and constant power of the rod. We managed to drag fishes away from the pillars and waterwheel where our baits were taken using brute force and the Slow Twitch delivered the needed power.

Zen X EA Zagan Slow Twitch is a very well built weapon. It has loads of power, casts very well, and fights superbly. It per-formed beyond my expectations. If you’re a Star Wars fan and you are in search of the “force,” look no further. The “force” is in the Zen X EA Zagan Slow Twitch rod.

Not Expensive Yet Good Enough

We all know the saying, “what you get is what you’ve paid for.” Of course that does not apply to renown branded products like Coach handbags, Dunhill wallets, or Mont-blanc pens. So, when it comes to fishing tackle; what if you want something good, with a good brand, but do not want to pay the price? This one here could be for you...

The Salty Stage JigCraft is a well designed rod. They come with high quality compact EVA handles, car-bon wrapped branding and spec section, metallic orange rings, and metallic orange and silver winding threads. What’s more important is that the rod as a whole feels light-weight weighing only 133 grams (tested model).

Well Designed & Lightweight

63

Page 64: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Where The Cost Got Trimmed

In the case of the Salty Stage JigCraft it is not as bad as with the Audi example. Well, you get China guides and reel seat. That is all that has been trimmed. You are still left with a proper Jigging rod, with good design, and good quality blanks and other parts; not forgetting lightness and well balance.

Of course something somewhere will have to give. Should you want a brand new Audi but willing to only pay half the price, you should be expecting to get a re-badge Volk-swagen with a Skoda engine, and Seat interior. It is still an Audi; with the four rings.

Page 65: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Lab Test Equipment UsedReel: Abu Garcia Promax SpinningLine: Berkley Trilene Big GamePoundage: 20.5lb.

Just how much power is in the Salty Stage JigCraft? They claim PE 0.8-2, so we set the bar at 20lb. We wore our safety gear and pro-ceeded to with the pressure test. Power delivery is not bad although not constant. We managed to get it to go pass 20lb. just at about 20.5lb. at a 45 degree rod angle with the bend reaching about 10” to the fore EVA (80% of the blank).

65

Page 66: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Field Test

Casting AbilitiesThe JigCraft is a very good caster, an advantage of having a softer tip. It sent our baits flying really far. Amongst the rods we tested on the day, the JigCraft cast the furthest and it did it on every cast. This is great when there is a need to cast jigs. However, I do not recommend casting heavier jigs due to its softer tip.

Page 67: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

67

Page 68: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

While it did pretty well in our lab, it got really scary where it matters most; during the battle. We risk losing the fish to the structures (pil-lars) and had to engage brute force. At a 45 degrees angle the rod ran out of steam and the fish was really close to the pillars.

More force had to be exerted. I force the rod to a very dangerous levels and managed to drag the fish out to a safer place where the battle continued. That was achieved with the rod bending all the way past the reel seat.

Battle Management

Page 69: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Alas, the fish was landed and taken up for some photos. The fish was indeed a strong gladiator giving a very good fight but the in-consistency of power delivery certainly threw in some scary mo-ments where I thought I would have lost the fight. Inconsistency of power is its weakness.

69

Page 70: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Verdict

This is a good value for money rod with a strong brand to match. However, its inconsistent power de-livery is something to note. This does not make it a bad rod. There are a lot of rods like this out there even at higher price points. If you are one who loves to see the rod bend all the way to the reel seat and not break, this is certainly one to consider.

Salt Spraying The VFOX D&C Bent Nose #3044 Pliers

Bent nose pliers have many uses and these uses spread from carpentry to fishing where we, anglers use them for a variety of things with the most common be-ing removal of hooks from somewhere within the fish’s mouth.

Page 73: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Forcing A Rust

Being a hook removing tool also means that the bent nose pliers follow us on fishing trips and having to do so, corrosion and rust resistance is very important especially to saltwater anglers. With that in mind we decided to force the VFOX D&C Bent Nose #3044 Pliers to rust with a saltwater spray test.

We sprayed some saltwater onto the pliers and allowed it to stay there for 12 hours (check done at 2 hours intervals). Why 12 hours? Well, that is generally how long we spend a day out at sea plus a few minutes more before we think, “oooh, perhaps I should wash the pliers too.”

73

Page 74: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Getting Salty With It

We started the test at 9.23am with a spray of salt-water on the pliers and allowed it to sit all salty. After some time, white specs of salt residue started ap-pearing. At 7.30pm I headed out to dinner with plans to return by 9pm. Well, I returned at 10 plus due to an unexpected friendly meet up, and decided to stop at 10.10pm.

The VFOX D&C Bent Nose #3044 Pliers got a thor-ough inspection before being washed with freshwa-ter and allowed to try. The result; no rust was de-tected. I’ll be using these pair of pliers from now on.

Oh Wow...

Quality Components

The Jiggernaut comes with Fuji guides, Fuji reel seat, and high quality compact EVA handles. As a package they give better confidence when fishing as the Fuji reel seat holds reels securely while the Fuji guides provide for lesser wear and tear on lines. The compact EVA handle makes for better comfort.

Fishing With Spoons Part 7 Basic Presentations: Jig Your Spoon

Yes, you read that right. Jig your spoon. When we hear fishing with spoons, we automatically think casting. Yes spoons can be jigged too. Do this when you’ve just parked your boat at a fish-ing spot and the water beneath you allows for you to give it a try. Who knows, a fish or a school of them may be holding out right beneath your boat.

Page 115: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Philemon Foo

Drop And Wait

After you’ve parked your boat at a place you intend to fish such as above a drop off, sit quiet and drop your spoon to the bottom. If a fish takes it, yay. If not, just let it sit at the bottom for a while more.

115

Page 116: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Start Jigging

Page 117: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

After sitting a while quietly enjoying the surroundings pick your rod up and give it a hard sudden jerk. No bite? Drop your spoon to the bottom and in a few more seconds give it another jerk, let it fall for a bit by dropping your rod tip while taking in some line, and then follow up with another jig.

Fishes holding deep at the bottom may go crazy and hit your spoon. This has worked for a variety of fishes such as snakeheads and sebaraus (Hampala Barb). Also works at sea.

117

Page 118: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Try Before Casting

If after doing the above and you’ve not register a hit, go on with your spoon casting game. Do the same at your next casting or fishing spot. This is to help ensure that you do not miss fishes sitting just beneath your boat.

Let’s Talk About Bearings: Part 4Hybrid Bearings

Knowledge Wise

Hybrids, the combination of things. I am sure you’ve heard of hybrid cars; cars that run on dinosaur fuel and cow manure, or was it electricity. Anyone of those combinations still makes it hybrid. The same goes for bearings those magical things that turn friction into, well, less friction.

Page 121: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Let’s Talk About Bearings: Part 4Hybrid Bearings

Philemon Foo

What Are Hybrid Bearings?

We all know steel bearings well enough. Hybrid bearings are bear-ings that use a mixture of steel parts and ceramic parts. They come in the form of steel ball bearings that are coated with ceram-ic or ceramic ball bearings. These bearings are then secured in a stainless steel cage, races, and shield hence the term hybrid.

121

Page 122: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 123: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Why Use Hybrid Bearings?Wooden balls are quite rubbish and steel balls can take the beating but tend to corrode and thus give up the ghost sometimes a bit too early. Industrial ceramic is re-ally tough and resistant to wear and corrosion. This said the use of ceramic in hybrid bearing allows for much longer life span as compared to that of stainless steel bearings.

Other Advantages

High quality ceramic coated bearings have one very distinct quality and advantage over steel bearings. They have a surface that is very much smoother than steel bearings giving them lower levels of friction. This trans-lates to longer spin duration and smoother operations.

123

Page 124: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Disadvantage

Being noisy is one complain that many who have taken the plunge and changed to hybrid bearings, complain about. There is this rough grinding sound that hybrid bearings emit. They sound like the bearing(s) have broken or failed but they have not. That is just how they sound like.

Page 125: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

To Summarize

Hybrid bearings are tougher and smoother than stainless steel bearings. They cost more too, even the cheap low quality ones that I personally do not recommend. But if you intend to go the road and spend good money, my recommendation will be to go for quality and not scrooge.

Get Your Kids FishingAn Initiative By The Asian Angler Magazine

Fishing is a very healthy sport. As anglers we enjoy fresh air, we experience nature, we improve our analytical skills, we absorb vitamins from the sun, we expend our minds, we learn about the environment, etc.

There are so many benefits to fishing and we should reduce our kids addiction to video games, computer games, playing with mobile devices, etc. We should get them to interact more with our environment and teach them a thing or two about life and living life.

With this in mind we hope to encourage you to take your kid(s) fishing and have dedicated a sec-tion of our magazine to Junior Anglers.

Junior Anglers

Meeting Friends And Wetting Lines

As a follow up to the 2015 Angling Fair, I managed to arrange a trip with Mr. Phil, chief editor of The Asian Angler magazine and Mr. Ginson, a great angler who has been one of my idols. I had a great time fishing with them.

Page 139: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

By Amirul Irfan

After a quick meet up at JIMS Pro Tackle, we headed down to a river, in hopes for sebarau (Hampala Barbs). I missed two sebarau on diving minnows. A moderate re-trieve with twitches triggered the bites.

139

Page 140: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Mr. Phil doing some cool casts with the Abu Garcia Revo MGX paired with an Abu Garcia Ikazuchi Ryoku.

The river is an unfamiliar to me and some areas required tricky casts. I will have to work on my casting skills.

Page 141: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The river started to get murky due to suspected sand min-ing activities upstream. Having a good chat with Mr. Phil and Mr. Ginson was the only catch of the session.

141

Page 142: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Due to a disappointing session at the river, we moved to the Steroid Pond, one of my favourite spots. Mr. Ginson helped me out to replace the Abu Garcia Silvermax’s bear-ings with Hedgehog Studio “Kattobi” Spool Bearings - ZR Super Long Cast Stainless Bearing - [1150ZR & 1030ZR].

The performance was out of the world. I was able to make good casts with minimal effort.

Page 143: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Mr. Ginson started the session with a juvenile haruan (Channa striatus) on a Smith Dentos Frog worked slowly on hydrilla.

143

Page 144: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Here’s Uncle Phil patiently working soft plastics for haru-ans. Juvenile haruans decided to nibble on his lures.

Page 145: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

A juvenile haruan I managed to fool on the Ripple Ash Zero Arise 60F minnow rigged on the Mustad Fastach swivel. A slow retrieve and a pause was all it took to fool this haruan.

145

Page 146: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

After fishing we headed to JIMS Pro Tackle and then off to a nearby restaurant for dinner. We had a good chat about fishing gear and Mr. Ginson showed me his lures and shared some good knowledge.

Page 147: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Smith Dentos frog which scored 2 fish for Mr. Ginson. Beautiful frog with a soft body, perfect for solid hooksets on snakeheads. It was an honour to fish with Mr. Ginson and Uncle Phil. Being friends online was good and be-ing able to meet them was great. I learned so much from them.

147

Page 148: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

A Mayan Cichlid caught on the Berkley Powerbait Saltwa-ter Shrug Minnow in the white glow colour with a jighead on the Mustad Fastach swivel with ball bearings. Last min-ute catch beside some grass. Feisty little fish that will hit anything in the water.

Page 149: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Fishing after rains at Beris Lake in Kedah. Beautiful lake with huge potential for sportfishing. I spotted snakeheads, Giant Snakeheads and even Hampala Barbs.

149

Page 150: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Boils of smaller Hampala Barbs were closer to shore, and micro spoons were great for fooling them. My younger brother caught his first Hampala Barb on the Sabpolo Rave Spoon. It was released after a few photo later.

Page 151: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Early morning Hampala Barb on my second day at the lake. My younger brother caught it on the same spoon. The take was very aggressive and suprising as it was still dark.

151

Page 152: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

We tried boating in the afternoon with the resort boat driv-er. The heat did not help at all. The resort boat driver did not know about fishing spots so we just randomly travelled and casted along.

Page 153: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

After getting off the boat at the jetty I almost hooked a tila-pia on a spoon. There were two aggressive tilapias. Before I could switch to a micro lure my younger brother dipped worms and caught one. I think this can be classified as stealing a catch.

153

Page 154: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

My father caught the second tilapia on worms too. I almost hooked another one on a Berkley Powerbait soft plas-tic but it decided to swim away after my younger brother splashed in the water.

Page 155: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

My dad managed to fool a tilapia at a mining pond in Per-ak. This tilapia took the Berkley Powerbait 2” Powergrub in black which was fished slowly on the bottom.

155

Page 156: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

A great start to a weekend. The Surecatch D-Legend 10-20lbs rod handling my personal record snakehead. De-spite aggressive runs into grass the D-Legend managed to control the fish.

Page 157: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

I made a quick cast with the DUO Realis Crankbait 48SR in Prism Clown after seeing some bubbles and baitfish jumping. The fish took the crank after a few seconds and made an impressive run. The Mustad Fastach Swivel helped to maintain the wobble of this small crankbait.

157

Page 158: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 159: The Asian Angler - August 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Releasing my personal record to grow bigger feels good. I hope to see it again one day, hopefully ready for another photo session.
