The ASCENT Project ASCENT will bring together Local and Environmental Authorities to collectively address the environmental challenges facing seven Areas of Natural Beauty, in five partner regions within the Northern Periphery and Arctic area of Europe. Due to increased visitor numbers, unregulated access and natural erosion these areas are experiencing degradation, loss of unique bio-diversity and bio-resources.
In response ASCENT sets out to develop an environmentally sustainable approach to access uplands and natural environments through the development of management plans and the implementation of innovative measures to restore habitats and limit further damage. ASCENT strives to explore new concepts for balancing tourism with cultural and economic interests and environmental needs; thereby promoting a sense of civic pride among communities and ensuring the long term sustainable management of Areas of Natural Beauty for future generations to come.
The ASCENT Project Objectives
1) To undertake international learning and to transfer knowledge across the five partner regions.
2) To create solutions and interventions to maintain and protect natural upland assets.
3) To develop path management tools and methods to mitigate habitat damage.
4) To design and trial practical initiatives appropriate to each site for long term sustainable environmental management.
5) To raise awareness and promote sustainable access to uplands and natural environments.
