MINISTRY NEWS

Hello, Asbury Church!

I want to relate one ministry opportunity that Ruthie recently took the

initiative to do.

Several weeks ago, Ruthie got to chatting with a woman who is an

employee of a company that has several storage unit sites around Or-

lando. Ruthie found out that the woman originally grew up in Viet-

nam. Ruthie did ask her some spiritual-related questions.

Afterward, Ruthie determined to somehow share the Good News of Jesus with the woman. Ruthie asked me to

purchase a DVD of the film JESUS that would include the following language versions: English, Vietnamese,

and French. FYI, the film is based on Luke's Gospel. It is a ministry tool developed by Cru (the name of Cam-

pus Crusade for Christ in the U.S.) and has been translated into more than 1,000 languages to date.

One day, Ruthie phoned ahead to make sure the woman was at work and at which office location. When Ruthie

presented the DVD to the woman, the woman was very touched and tears welled up in her eyes -- touched be-

cause of the gift, and second, because she knew that Ruthie had driven across town just to visit with her. She

came around from behind the counter and embraced Ruthie.

Join us in prayer that this woman will watch the film and that she will recognize her need for Jesus in her life.

Next week Wednesday, Ruthie will begin teaching Disciple IV (she taught it this past year) with a new group of

"students" -- 11 adults are signed up for her group! Thank You, God!

Thank you for your prayers and support of our work to share the Good News of Jesus and help build up com-

mitted followers of Jesus.

Warmly,

Rich Wiewiora ~ for Ruthie + me

Ushers and Greeters: We Need You!

Asbury needs lots of volunteers to maintain our vibrant and welcoming atmosphere each Sunday. Lately, we

are falling short on volunteers to greet or usher at either service. Whether you can serve once a year or every

week, all levels of commitment are valued and appreciated. Training is pro-

vided for all opportunities. If you have questions about what role is best for

you or would like to SIGN UP, please contact Sherry Hershberger at

[email protected] or 238-0737. Thank you!

It has been an absolute blessing getting to know our InsideOut youth group these past six months. We have

had an AMAZING summer full of worship, service, fun, and fellowship. As we look back on the amazing

things God has done this year in the youth ministry, it's also time to look ahead to what's next. We will have

a scheduling meeting Sunday September 21st at 4pm in the Fireside Room. At the meeting, we will go over

the schedule for the entire 2014-2015 school year up to the summer. All high school youth and parents are

encouraged to attend. Bring your calendars and planners as we look forward to what God

has in store at InsideOut this next year!

In addition, I am always on the lookout for more adult volunteers for the youth ministry. If

you have a heart for youth and a desire to come alongside them to shepherd and encourage

them as they grow in their faith and you like to have a ton of fun, please feel free to let me

know. Parents of course play the single most crucial role in raising a child, but I believe

having spiritual mentors to come alongside and support parents is essential.

As always please let me know if you have any questions whatsoever about our youth

ministry at Asbury.

Looking forward with you in Christ,

Carter Baldwin

ASBURY COMMUNITY GROUPS

Asbury’s vision is to care within and reach out, that all

may know Christ. At the core of this vision and at the

core of our human existence are relationships. Our de-

sire is to live in relationship with God and with others.

One of the main ways we are seeking to live out this

vision is through our new Community Groups. Com-

munities are small groups of about 8-16 people that

meet weekly to learn together, and share life with each

other. Groups vary in day, time, location, and affinity

(women, men, couples, young adults, open to all, etc.)

to hopefully accommodate as many people seeking to

engage as we can. Most Community Groups will meet

weekly from September through May, although some

may choose to meet throughout the summer as well.

The main purpose of Community Groups is to create

safe and supportive environments to help people grow

in authentic relationship with God and others. Com-

munities will spend time in various studies provided

for them centering around sermon discussions, topical

studies, Bible studies, and/or book studies. By varying

the types of study, we seek to meet a variety of learning needs as well as meeting a variety of levels of spiritual

growth as well as teaching us all different ways of digging deeper in our faith.

Check out this list of all of our Communities and pick the one that works for you!

ASBURY SENIORS’ EVENT— September 9th

12:15 — 2:00 PM

The Asbury Seniors have invited “The Three Wives’ Men” to

perform for us following our luncheon meeting on Tuesday,

September 9th. We begin with a pot-luck lunch at 12:15 and will

adjourn to the Sanctuary for the program about 1 p.m.

The Three Wives’ Men is a down-home, country, bluegrass style

of music in which they share the gospel of Jesus Christ, and

introduce others to the love of the Lord, in a fun, uplifting and

hope-filled way that touches the hearts of people of all ages. A

free-will offering will be taken to help support their ministry and

a table of CD’s will also be available for purchase.

In 2005 the group began singing together as “The Four Wives’ Men” in the Pardeeville United Methodist Church

as part of a Sunday morning worship service. Over the next two years the members of this group enjoyed sharing

their music together at various church functions, but always in their own church. In 2007, with the love and

support of their wives and through the retirement of their pastor from local church ministry, they were given the

opportunity to share their love of the Lord beyond their local church through a music ministry that has involved

the leading of worship in many churches throughout Wisconsin. With the death of their eldest member this past

June their music and ministry continues as “The Three Wives’ Men.”

This is a grand way in which to begin our fall season. We encourage and invite all ages to come join us. Certainly,

bring a friend.

Prince Patrick Myers, Asbury's Liberian Medical Student

Liberia is in the news because of the outbreak of Ebola and the fear, illness, death and disruption to life

that is resulting. The United Methodist hospital at Ganta is on the front lines, but as you can imagine this

small facility is challenged because of a lack of staff and resources.

Asbury began an investment in health of the Liberian people and the future of Ganta United Methodist

Hospital in 2010 by supporting Prince Patrick Myers' medical school education. Prince is a student at the Uni-

versity of The Gambia Medical School where he has completed four years. His start there was rough. He re-

ceived notice of his admission a month after classes began, so early on he was playing catch-up. His first

grades were barely passing. His most recent grades show that he is indeed a remarkable student. He received

distinction in Community Medicine in the Spring semester. His classes this coming year will include Medi-

cine II, Surgery, Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Prince was born in Ganta and educated through high school at the United Methodist Mission School

there. His mother is a nurse in the Ganta Hospital operating rooms. He completed a degree in Chemistry at

Cuttington University in Liberia and then decided to become a medical doctor. Opportunity for medical edu-

cation in Liberia was nearly non-existent following the civil war. Prince was fortunate to secure a spot in The

Gambia at the university, nearly 1500 miles from his home in Ganta. He is a Christian in a largely Muslim

country. His professors teach in English, but many are native Spanish speakers from Cuba. Prince has com-

mented on the challenge of his Liberian ear understanding Spanish accented English. There is a shortage of

textbooks and supplies. Fortunately, we are able to send some items in barrels shipped to The Gambia by As-

bury member, Frank Kooistra. When Prince finishes his training he will return to a position at Ganta Hospital.

Our original budget for Prince was $7000 per year. This was an under estimate! His current expenses

include tuition, room, board, transportation, books, equipment, utilities, internet, clothing, and visa. All of this

comes to nearly $23,000/year. Fortunately Prince has been awarded a World Communion Scholarship by the

United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries for $7500/year. Asbury has been very generous in meet-

ing Prince's need. September is the month that we seek support for Asbury's Liberian medical student. Please

pray for Prince and his family in Liberia. Your gift in his support is needed and appreciated. Mark your

checks for the September Mission of the Month. Thank you.

For September...

Asbury in the Good Neighbor Fest Parade—Sunday, August 24, 2014

A great time was had by all! Wow, what a blessing to be present in our community on a blisteringly hot summer

day handing out 3,150 bottles of ice cold water! It was a welcome blessing to 3,150 people!

A very BIG THANKS to:

The person who donated the water

To all the volunteers who put Asbury labels on the water bottles

To all who walked and handed out the water

To those on the trailer loading all the bags with water

And thanks to all who walked and cleaned up the parade route after it was all over.

What a great effort and presence in our community!
