Reconnue pour son énergie, sa précision et sa polyvalence, Dina Gilbert aborde avec passion le grand répertoire symphonique tout en accordant une place importante à la création musicale. Originaire de la Beauce, elle est directrice musicale et chef de l'Orchestre symphonique de l'Estuaire (Québec) et du Kamloops Symphony Orchestra (Colombie-Britannique).

De 2013 à 2016, Dina Gilbert a occupé le poste de chef assistante de l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal et de maestro Kent Nagano. À ce titre, elle a dirigé de nombreux concerts et assisté des chefs invités tels que Zubin Mehta, Sir Roger Norrington et Lawrence Foster. En avril 2016, elle a obtenu un grand succès en remplaçant au pied levé le chef Alain Altinoglu dans trois concerts à l'OSM comprenant Les planètes de Gustav Holst.

À l'été 2016, elle a dirigé la musique du compositeur John Corigliano lors de la première mondiale de la présentation du film Le violon rouge avec orchestre au Festival de Lanaudière. Après avoir présenté E.T. l'extraterrestre avec l'OSM en 2018, elle présente aujourd’hui le film The Artist.

Au cours des dernières années, Dina Gilbert a été invitée à diriger de nombreux orchestres canadiens tels le Toronto Symphony Orchestra, l'Orchestre Métropolitain et le Regina Symphony Orchestra. Elle a récemment fait ses débuts aux États-Unis en dirigeant le Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra et l’Eugene Symphony. Outremer, elle a dirigé des orchestres en France, en Allemagne, en Roumanie et en Estonie. En avril et mai 2017, elle a effectué une tournée de cinq concerts avec la Sinfonia Varsovia dans les villes de Niigata et Tokyo dans le cadre du festival « La Folle journée ».

Recognized for her energy, precision and versatility, Dina Gilbert brings great passion to the symphonic repertoire and dedication to conducting new commissions and works. A native of Beauce, she is Musical Director and Conductor of the Rimouski-based Orchestre symphonique de l’Estuaire and the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra in British Columbia.

From 2013 to 2016, Dina Gilbert was Assistant Conductor of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal under Maestro Kent Nagano. During her residency, she conducted several performances, also serving as an assistant to guest conductors including Zubin Mehta, Sir Roger Norrington, and Lawrence Foster. In April 2016, she stepped in to replace Maestro Alain Altinoglu on short notice, conducting the OSM in three concerts of Gustav Holst’s The Planets, to great critical acclaim.

In the summer of 2016, Gilbert conducted the Festival de Lanaudière Orchestra performing the film score by composer John Corigliano in a world premiere live projection of The Red Violin. In 2018, she conducted the OSM in a performance accompanying E.T. the Extraterrestrial. Today, she presents to you the music from the film The Artist.

In recent years, Dina Gilbert has been invited to conduct several Canadian orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Métropolitain, and Regina Symphony Orchestra. She recently made her USA debut conducting the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and the Eugene Symphony. Overseas, she has conducted various orchestras in France, Germany, Romania, and Estonia. La pianiste et compositrice Lorraine Desmarais est reconnue en Amérique du Nord, en Europe, en Asie et en Afrique pour ses prestations en solo, en trio, avec big band ou avec orchestre symphonique. C’est en 1984 que sa carrière a pris son envol alors que le Festival international de jazz de Montréal lui a décerné le prix Yamaha. Depuis, Desmarais a obtenu de nombreux autres honneurs dont le premier prix de la Great American Jazz Piano Competition, le prix Oscar-Peterson du Festival international de jazz de Montréal et trois prix Opus du Conseil québécois de la musique. En 2011, l’Université du Québec à Montréal lui a décerné un doctorat honoris causa et, en 2013, elle a été nommée membre de l’Ordre du Canada.

Lorraine Desmarais s’est produite en concert avec des ensembles et des artistes de jazz de renommée internationale dont le big band Diva de New York, le Brubeck Brothers Quartet, Chick Corea, Paquito D’Rivera, Oliver Jones, Joe Lovano, Tiger Okoshi et Jacky Terrasson. Sa polyvalence musicale lui a permis de partager la scène avec des artistes du milieu classique dont l’Ensemble Caprice, Marc Hervieux, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Stéphane Tétreault et Alain Trudel. Sur la scène des concerts de musique populaire, elle a collaboré avec Sylvain Cossette, Ariane Moffatt, Térez Montcalm, Bruno Pelletier, Michel Rivard et Bob Walsh.

Lorraine Desmarais a composé plusieurs musiques de film pour l’Office national du film du Canada en plus de commandes spéciales, dont Sonate pour flûte et piano, pour les duettistes Lise Daoust et Louise Bessette, Odalisque, pour le pianiste de jazz Oliver Jones et XIII – Thème et variations, pour la violoniste Angèle Dubeau et La Pietà. Sa discographie comprend 12 albums de compositions originales. Trois d’entre eux (Trio Lorraine Desmarais, Jazz pour Noël et Big Band) ont remporté des prix Félix au Gala de l’ADISQ.

Pianist and composer Lorraine Desmarais is renowned in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa for her solo, trio, and big band performances, and has also appeared with many Canadian and European symphony orchestras. Her career as a jazz pianist was propelled in Canada when she won the Montreal International Jazz Festival’s Yamaha First Prize in 1984. Chez Michel Hazanavicius, le cinéma est partout : dans sa maison et dans sa vie qu’il partage avec l’actrice Bérénice Bejo. Nourri de cinéma son enfance, le réalisateur, qui a débuté sa carrière dans l’émission satirique culte « Les Nuls » sur Canal +, ne cesse en effet de détourner les codes du cinéma pour construire une œuvre originale.

Dès son premier succès télévisé en 1993, La classe américaine, Michel Hazanavicius joue avec les codes et les genres en détournant les dialogues d’extraits de films connus des années 1950 à 1980. Son goût du pastiche s’affirme déjà. Après un premier court métrage, Échec au capital, et plusieurs collaborations de scénarios, il réalise en 1999 son premier long métrage, Mes amis. En 2006 il réalise son deuxième long métrage, OSS 117 : Le Caire, nid d’espions. L’esprit libre et parodique séduit, le film remporte un grand succès critique et public. Jean Dujardin y campe un agent très peu académique que l’on retrouve dans la suite, toujours aussi débridée et acclamée, OSS 117 : Rio ne répond plus.

En 2010, Michel Hazanavicius réalise un film muet et en noir et blanc, The Artist, retraçant l’histoire d’une vedette américaine du cinéma muet des années 1920 (interprété par Jean Dujardin) confrontée à l’arrivée du parlant. Jean Dujardin reçoit le prix d’interprétation masculine à Cannes en 2011. Le 24 février 2012, Michel Hazanavicius se voit décerner le César du meilleur réalisateur pour The Artist, qui obtient cinq autres trophées, dont celui du meilleur film et de la meilleure actrice pour Bérénice Bejo. En 2012, Michel Hazanavicius reçoit l'Oscar du meilleur réalisateur pour The Artist et devient le deuxième réalisateur français, neuf ans après Roman Polanski, à gagner cette récompense. Cinq Oscars sont décernés au total à son long métrage dont ceux du meilleur film et du meilleur acteur pour Jean Dujardin. Le film a été vendu dans le monde entier.

Avec son dernier film, Le redoutable, il redessine à sa manière la figure de Jean-Luc Godard tout en signant un opus très personnel.

For Michel Hazanavicius, cinema is everywhere: in his home and in the daily life he shares with his spouse, actress Bérénice Bejo. Immersed in cinema from his childhood, he jump-started his career with the famous satirical television show “Les nuls” on Canal +. Hazanavicius defies filmmaking norms: each of his movies is a highly original creation.

At the outset, with his 1993 television success, La classe américaine, Michel Hazanavicius began to play with codes and genres, high jacking the dialogues of well-known films from the 1950s to the 1980s. His taste for pastiche had already emerged. After his first short film, Échec au capital, and several script collaborations, in 1999 he made his first feature film, Mes amis. In 2006, he directed his second feature film, OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies. The film’s free and parodic spirit drew great critical and box-office success. In this film, Jean Dujardin portrays an atypical agent, who appears in the equally unbridled sequel, OSS 117: Lost in Rio.

In 2010, Michel Hazanavicius directed the silent black-and-white film The Artist, retracing the story of an American silent-picture star (played by Jean Dujardin), who must come to terms with the advent of talking films. For his performance, Jean Dujardin received the Best Actor’s Award at Cannes in 2011. On February 24, 2012, Michel Hazanavicius was honoured with the César for Best Director, for The Artist, which garnered five other trophies including Best Film and Best Actress (Bérénice Bejo). In 2012, he won the Oscar for Best Director for The Artist, becoming the second French director, nine years after Roman Polanski, to receive this prestigious award. A total of five Oscars were awarded to this feature film, including Best Film and Best Actor for Jean Dujardin. The Artist was distributed worldwide to outstanding acclaim.

With Le redoutable, his latest creation, Michel Hazanavicius reveals his own remarkably intimate vision of the great filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard.

Ludovic Bource a acquis une renommée internationale en 2011 avec sa bande sonore du long métrage The Artist, couronnée d'un Oscar dans une interprétation de l'Orchestre philharmonique de Bruxelles. Le compositeur a remporté de nombreux autres prix pour cette musique : un Golden Globe, un prix Grammy et un prix décerné par les BAFTA Awards. Sa trame sonore pour le téléfilm Clear History (productions HBO), avec l'acteur Larry David, a été sélectionnée pour un prix Emmy.

Ludovic Bource a d'abord composé de la musique commerciale, puis s'est tourné vers les courts métrages en écrivant les musiques d’En attendant (2000), Spartacus (2003) et Sirene Song (2005). Après avoir travaillé avec Michel Hazanavicius sur Mes amis, il est devenu le collaborateur à long terme du réalisateur, composant les bandes-son d’OSS 117: Le Caire, nid d'espions (2006), de la suite OSS 117: Rio ne répond plus (2009) et, plus récemment, du film muet The Artist, tourné en noir et blanc. En juin 2012, il a été invité à se joindre à l'Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences et a été élevé au rang de Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres par le gouvernement français.

Numerous accolades for this work include an Oscar, Golden Globe Award, Grammy Award, and BAFTA Award. He is also known for his Emmy-nominated score to Clear History, a made-for-television film for HBO with actor Larry David.

He has toured across the planet performing the piano part of The Artist live in concert, and with some of the most prestigious orchestras, including those of London, Paris, Rotterdam, and Sydney. Most recently, Ludovic Bource created the score to David Charhon Les naufragés, a French comedy released in February 2016.

The Artist est le premier film presque entièrement muet à remporter un Oscar depuis 1929, l’année de la première cérémonie. C’est aussi le premier film en noir et blanc à gagner ce prix depuis The Apartment (La garçonnière) de 1960. On se rappelle par ailleurs que Schindler’s List (1993) était principalement en noir et blanc, mais contenait aussi quelques séquences en couleurs. The Artist a reçu plus de prix que tout autre film français, à commencer par l’Oscar du meilleur film. Le principal acteur masculin, Jean Dujardin, a été le premier Français à remporter l’Oscar du meilleur acteur. Le film a reçu six nominations aux Golden Globes – le plus grand nombre parmi tous les films de 2011 – et en a remporté trois, Meilleur film musical ou comédie, Meilleure musique et Meilleur acteur dans un film musical ou une comédie. The Artist est une comédie dramatique lancée en France le 12 octobre 2011, cinq mois après sa première au Festival de Cannes. Bien que produit par la société française La Petite Reine, le film a été entièrement tourné à Los Angeles, surtout à Hollywood, avec scènes additionnelles dans des salles, résidences et restaurants de l’endroit. Les comédiens et l’équipe technique venaient de France et des États-Unis.

En un sens, The Artist illustre parfaitement un renversement de situation. Son histoire tourne autour de l’arrivée des « parlants » qui ont vite déclassé les « muets » tout en nous donnant, à nous spectateurs du XXIe siècle, un splendide film muet (et qui plus est, en noir et blanc !) évoquant le style cinématographique d’il y a presque cent ans. L’artiste du titre pourrait aussi bien concerner les participants au film, le scénariste et réalisateur Michel Hazanavicius, le producteur Thomas Langmann, le compositeur Ludovic Bource, le directeur photo Guillaume Schiffman et les deux acteurs principaux, Jean Dujardin et Bérénice Bejo. Selon le site web de collecte de critiques Rotten Tomatoes, « The Artist est un hommage populaire à la magie du cinéma muet […] un film brillant, joyeux, doté d’exquis numéros et d'un style visuel à revendre. »

In one sense, The Artist is a perfect example of reverse imaging. Its storyline revolves around the successful arrival of the “talkies” and how they quickly rendered the “silents” obsolete, yet here in the twenty-first century we have a highly successful silent film (and black-and-white at that) that harks back to the film style of nearly a century ago. The artist of the title might well refer to any of the people involved in creating the film: script writer and director Michel Hazanavicius, producer Thomas Langmann, composer Ludovic Bource, cinematographer Guillaume Schiffman, and the two lead actors Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo. The critical consensus of the web site Rotten Tomatoes calls The Artist “a crowd-pleasing tribute to the magic of silent cinema, … a clever, joyous film with delightful performances and visual style to spare.”

The original score for The Artist was composed by Ludovic Bource (b. 1970), long-time collaborator with Michel Hazanavicius having previously scored the films Mes Amis (1999), OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies (2006), and its sequel OSS 117: Lost in Rio (2009). But it was Bource’s contribution to The Artist that brought him international attention as well as numerous prizes and awards. Peppy lui rend visite à l’hôpital et lui offre de se rétablir chez elle. La situation est donc maintenant inversée. Peppy veut l’aider à reprendre le travail, mais il maintient son refus de participer aux parlants. Puis, au souvenir de ses talents de danseur, elle persuade le patron du studio, Al Zimmer, de les laisser exécuter un numéro ensemble. Dans la scène finale du film, George et Peppy exécutent une danse éblouissante qui a requis dix-sept prises, et pour laquelle le couple Dujardin-Bejo a passé cinq mois à étudier la danse à claquettes. Le silence du film est rompu lorsque le réalisateur lance « Coupez! », ce à quoi Zimmer ajoute : « Parfait! Magnifique! Pourriez-vous m’en faire une autre? » Dans son inimitable accent français, George répond : « With pleasure! »

Peppy is in the right place at the right time when the studio they both work for takes the plunge into talking pictures. Valentin resists becoming part of this new development, but is left behind while Peppy surges ahead with the talkies. He winds up banrupt, turns to alcohol, and in the depths of depression sets fire to all his old film reels. He nearly succumbs to smoke inhalation but is rescued in the nick of time. Peppy visits him in the hospital and offers to let him recuperate in her home. Now the tables are turned. Peppy wants to help Valentin get back into the business, but he still refuses to do a talking picture. Then Peppy recalls that he is a good dancer, and convinces the studio boss (Zimmer) to let them make a musical together. In the film’s final scene, Valentin and Peppy do a spectacular dance number that required seventeen takes, and for which the Dujardin-Bejo couple spent five months studying tap dancing. Verbal silence in The Artist is broken when the director of the musical calls out “Cut!,” to which Zimmer adds: “Perfect. Beautiful. Could you give me one more?” Valentin, with his unmistakable French accent, replies, “With pleasure!”

La réalisation de la nouvelle résidence de l’OSM a été rendue possible grâce au gouvernement du Québec, qui en assumera également les coûts, dans le cadre d’un partenariat public-privé entre le ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine et Groupe immobilier Ovation, une filiale de SNC-Lavalin. L’acoustique et la scénographie de la salle portent la signature de la firme Artec Consultants Inc., dirigée pour ce projet par Tateo Nakajima. L’architecture a été confiée à un consortium constitué de Diamond and Schmitt Architects Inc. et Ædifica Architectes, sous la direction de Jack Diamond.

The construction of the OSM’s new home was made possible thanks to the government of Québec which will also assume its cost as part of a public-private partnership between the Ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition féminine and Groupe immobilier Ovation, a subsidiary of SNC-Lavalin. The hall’s acoustics and theatre design bear the signature of the firm Artec Consultants Inc., with this project headed by Tateo Nakajima. Its architecture was entrusted to a consortium consisting of Diamond and Schmitt Architects Inc. and Ædifica Architects, under the direction of Jack Diamond.

LE GRAND ORGUE

PIERRE-BÉIQUE

L’orgue de la Maison symphonique de Montréal, inauguré le 28 mai 2014, a été réalisé par la maison Casavant pour le compte de l’OSM qui en est le propriétaire, avec la collaboration des architectes Diamond Schmitt + Ædifica pour sa conception visuelle. Il s’agit d’un grand orgue d’orchestre, inscrit dans les registres du facteur de Saint-Hyacinthe comme opus 3900. Il comporte 109 registres, 83 jeux, 116 rangs et 6 489 tuyaux.

Il porte le nom de Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique, en hommage au fondateur et premier directeur général de l’OSM (de 1939 à 1970). Ce mélomane engagé et gestionnaire avisé avait pris la relève de dame Antonia Nantel, épouse de monsieur Athanase David, qui agissait depuis 1934 comme secrétaire du conseil d’administration de la Société des Concerts symphoniques de Montréal, l’organisme ancêtre de l’OSM.

L’achat de cet orgue a été rendu possible par une gracieuseté de feue madame Jacqueline Desmarais qui en a assumé le coût total et a voulu ainsi perpétuer par son appellation le souvenir de l’irremplaçable contribution de monsieur Pierre Béique à la mission d’excellence de l’OSM.

The organ at Maison symphonique de Montréal, inaugurated on May 28, 2014, was designed and built on behalf of the OSM by the organ builder Casavant with the collaboration of architects Diamond Schmitt + Ædifica for its visual design, and is the Orchestra’s property. This is a large organ intended for orchestral use, and is recorded in the books of the Saint-Hyacinthe builder as Opus 3,900. It consists of 109 registers, 83 stops, 116 ranks and 6,489 pipes.

The instrument bears the name Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique, in tribute to the OSM founder and first general manager (from 1939 to 1970). An astute administrator and a committed music lover, Pierre Béique took over from Dame Antonia Nantel, wife of Mr. Athanase David, who had acted, since 1934, as secretary of the Board of Directors of the Société des Concerts symphoniques de Montréal, the forerunner of the OSM.

Purchase of this organ was made possible, courtesy of the late Mrs. Jacqueline Desmarais, who assumed the total cost and, in so doing, wished to keep alive the memory of the lasting contribution made by Mr. Pierre Béique to the OSM’s mission of excellence.
