Well, it’s the end of the school year again, a time where we all reflect on the year of teaching. For some of us, it’s a time when we reflect on what we could have done differently, for others it’s the way we expect to continue. When you take time to reflect I encourage you to look to all of your

successes. It’s always easy to look back and dwell on the negative, because let us face it, we are all human. Think about that time you looked out across the classroom and knew that you gained their interest. Remember the time when you were greeted at the door with a smile, a hand shake, or a high five. It’s often times like that are the most reassuring to me, that I am where I am supposed to be in my life. I am a teacher.

We all know that teaching has its challenges, but we as art educators are probably the most flexible. We don’t just teach pretty pictures and the dreaded “artsy fartsy” ideas. We are much more than just that. We teach problem solving skills and confidence. Making art requires thinking and decision making: what color will I use, how can I make this stand up, how can I make this stronger, quieter, brighter, more bendable. As they make art, and solve these problems, they begin to believe in themselves. That confidence helps them in everything they do. Art is a tool, not an end in itself. Let us not forget creativity too. Creativity is the ability to look at reality and make new connections; connections that have not been made before. It doesn’t take rocket scientists to do art. Yet art develops the same capacity a rocket scientist needs: the ability to manipulate complex materials, data, information, and structures. We are vital to our everyday students and we must continue to be there and guide them and make our mark on the world.

Now that the school year is over, it’s time to make time for you. We spend so much time in the school year helping guide minds that often we forget about ourselves. Take time to get out and explore, spend time with your family and best friends. I also encourage you to make art. Unleash your inner self and create. Add a new medium to your toolbox. Challenge yourself to keep growing. Get out and become a part of your art community. The more connections you make the easier it is to advocate for your department and your students. Former President and current Portfolio Chair Jann Jeffrey has a wonderful new gallery in the Paseo Arts District. Join her on First Friday Gallery walks. She will be housing the Past Presidents of OAEA on June 3rd, such a great opportunity for you to get out and connect with the former leaders and visionaries or our states Art Education.

All in all, I wish you all the best summer and hope that you take the summer to reflect on all the positive things that helped you get where you are today. Although we all may have some negatives, take those to only make you stronger. As an art teacher YOU ARE NEEDED.

Elgin Community Raises

$2000 to Combat Hunger The Elgin High School Art Department sponsored their 3rd Annual Empty Bowls Dinner. The

dinner and later sales raised $2000. The Empty Bowls Project is an international effort to fight hunger. The basic idea is simple. Participants create ceramic bowls and then serve a simple

meal. Guests purchase a beautifully handcrafted bowl for $10 and receive a free meal of beans, cornbread, and dessert. They keep their bowls as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the

world. The FACS classes and other clubs were invited to participate, bringing the total bowl count to around 250. With the money raised, we were able to give both the Lawton Food Bank and

Feed the Children a check for $1000. The Elgin High School Art Club and FCCLA took a trip to Feed the Children and spent two and one half hours packing food boxes and individual care boxes to

be distributed to 500 families in Oklahoma.

An extraordinary exhibition will be the June art show at the Jann Jeffrey Gallery at 3018 Paseo, Oklahoma City. Eight past presidents of the Oklahoma Art Education Association will display the award winning and unique pieces that represent these artists all of whom have led our organization. Those who will be participating are Nick Kyle, Patrick Riley, JoAnn Adams, Susan Gabbard, Barbara Gabel, Bob Curtis, Jann Jeffrey, Marsha Carmen and our current president, Eric Lyons. OAEA is fortunate to have artists who have shared their expertise and creativity with our Oklahoma art students and we are proud that they have represented OAEA. This exhibit will have an Opening in conjunction with the Paseo First Friday Walk on June 7, 2013, 6-10 pm. Jann Jeffrey Gallery, 3018 Paseo.

April’s Oklahoma Art Educator of the Month is Patty Minor.

Patty is a national board certified teacher, she co-sponsors chess club, at her previous school she took students to paint the windows of local businesses during the holidays. She has consistently participated in her district art show. She taught a workshop at the OAEA fall conference about her Chihuly bowls that allow students to create a glass-like work in elementary school from common materials. Her dog is being trained to go to classrooms to be with students and her last pet did the same.

Her student work is available on artsonia at http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=81216. At the 2012 Oklahoma Student Art Exhibition her students tied for 6th out of 68 schools and had 12 merit award winners. I taught at Patty’s former school for two years after she left. She really prepared her students to be creative and be outstanding art students.
