COMMUNITY LECTURE SERIES The Art and History of the Celts SEPTEMBER 7–21, 2016 Muskegon Museum of Art Frey Auditorium A PARTNERSHIP OF THE MUSKEGON MUSEUM OF ART, MUSKEGON COMMUNITY COLLEGE, AND THE MICHIGAN IRISH MUSIC FESTIVAL $45 per person for the Lecture Series Where and when did Celc art and culture originate? Even though the ancient Celts leſt no wrien record of their existence, their art proves they were a dynamic and sophiscated society. They were disnct from their Greek and Roman contemporaries, yet equal to and, even for a me, superior to their so-called civilized neighbors. As Chrisanity entered Celc lands during the medieval period, the ancient art tradions adapted to become one of the most popular and longest surviving styles of art in the world today. The lecture series, presented by MCC Art instructor Tim Norris with addional guest speakers, is directly linked to events and acvies at the Michigan Irish Music Fesval. Topics will address: Who are the Celts? What traits make their art significant? How has Celc art and culture changed over me? How does their art reflect their unique spiritual beliefs and tradions? What was Ireland’s disncve role in preserving this heritage? What vesges of Celc culture have survived to this day? How is Celc art and history interpreted and presented through contemporary fesvals, tourism, and popular culture? Parcipants are strongly encouraged to aend the Michigan Irish Music Fesval September 15–18 in order to more fully experience topics introduced in the lecture series. Parcipants may also complete an oponal acvies packet while at the Fesval to deepen their understanding of Celc art and history.
