The Ark Brought to Jerusalem

Text: 2 Samuel 6:1-23, 1. David again brought together out of Israel chosen men, thirty thousand in all. 2. He and all his men set out from Baalah of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name, the name of the LORD Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim that are on the ark. 3. They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart 4. with the ark of God on it, and Ahio was walking in front of it. 5. David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the LORD, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals. 6. When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. 7. The LORD's anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God. 8. Then David was angry because the LORD's wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah. 9. David was afraid of the LORD that day and said, "How can the ark of the LORD ever come to me?" 10. He was not willing to take the ark of the LORD to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 11. The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the LORD blessed him and his entire household.

12. Now King David was told, "The LORD has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God." So David went down and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13. When those who were carrying the ark of the LORD had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. 14. David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the LORD with all his might, 15. while he and the entire house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of trumpets. 16. As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she despised him in her heart. 17. They brought the ark of the LORD and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and David sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the LORD. 18. After he had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD Almighty. 19. Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and women. And all the people went to their homes. 20. When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, "How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, disrobing in the sight of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!" 21. David said to Michal, "It was before the LORD, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the LORD's people Israel—I will celebrate before the LORD. 22. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor."

23. And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death. (NIV) Introduction: I. Coffman observed that the religious situation at this time was truly deplorable.

A. There were two (2) high priests, one (1) in Judah and one (1) serving the other tribes. B. Saul had murdered the priests at Nob. C. The ark had been captured by the Philistines. D. The people were ignorant of God’s will.

II. Unification of the nation under one (1) king with one (1) high priest was vital for the nation. (See Smith)

A. David was equal to the task. B. 1 Chronicles 13:1-14, David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our brothers throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasturelands, to come and join us. Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not inquire of it during the reign of Saul." The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people. So David assembled all the Israelites, from the Shihor River in Egypt to Lebo Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim. David and all the Israelites with

him went to Baalah of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who is enthroned between the cherubim—the ark that is called by the Name. They moved the ark of God from Abinadab's house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it. David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals and trumpets. When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. The LORD's anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God. Then David was angry because the LORD's wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.David was afraid of God that day and asked, "How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?" He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house for three months, and the LORD blessed his household and everything he had. (NIV) C. 1 Chronicles 15:1-29, After David had constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it. Then David said, "No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him forever." David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD to the place he had prepared for it. He called together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites: From the descendants of Kohath, Uriel the leader and 120 relatives; from the descendants of Merari, Asaiah the leader and 220 relatives; from the descendants of Gershon, Joel the leader and 130 relatives; from the descendants of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the leader and 200 relatives; from the descendants of Hebron, Eliel the leader and 80 relatives; from

the descendants of Uzziel, Amminadab the leader and 112 relatives. Then David summoned Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab the Levites. He said to them, "You are the heads of the Levitical families; you and your fellow Levites are to consecrate yourselves and bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. It was because you, the Levites, did not bring it up the first time that the LORD our God broke out in anger against us. We did not inquire of him about how to do it in the prescribed way." So the priests and Levites consecrated themselves in order to bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel. And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the LORD. David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their brothers as singers to sing joyful songs, accompanied by musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals. So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel; from his brothers, Asaph son of Berekiah; and from their brothers the Merarites, Ethan son of Kushaiah; and with them their brothers next in rank: Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel, the gatekeepers. The musicians Heman, Asaph and Ethan were to sound the bronze cymbals; Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah and Benaiah were to play the lyres according to alamoth , and Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel and Azaziah were to play the harps, directing according to sheminith . Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at it. Berekiah and Elkanah were to be doorkeepers for the ark. Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah and Eliezer the priests were to blow trumpets before the ark of God. Obed-Edom and Jehiah were also to be doorkeepers for the ark. So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders

of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. Because God had helped the Levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD, seven bulls and seven rams were sacrificed. Now David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and as were the singers, and Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs. David also wore a linen ephod. So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouts, with the sounding of rams' horns and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps. As the ark of the covenant of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David dancing and celebrating, she despised him in her heart. (NIV) D. 1 Chronicles 16:1-3, In the thirty-sixth year of Asa's reign Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah. Asa then took the silver and gold out of the treasuries of the LORD's temple and of his own palace and sent it to Ben-Hadad king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus. "Let there be a treaty between me and you," he said, "as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me." (NIV) E. “Establishing Jerusalem as a center of worship for the unified nation was the priority of the early years of David’s reign,” Smith wrote, and bringing the ark of God to Jerusalem was a vital spiritual element in achieving this goal.

I. David assembled thirty thousand (30,000) chosen men of Israel.

A. These, Smith wrote, formed an honor guard for the ark of God as it was being moved to Jerusalem. B. These military units could also provide defense should the Philistines oppose the moving of the ark. C. 1 Chronicles 13:1-8, David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our brothers throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasturelands, to come and join us. 3 Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not inquire of it during the reign of Saul." The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people. So David assembled all the Israelites, from the Shihor River in Egypt to Lebo Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim. David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals and trumpets. (NIV) D. Clarke supposed these were fresh troops, a new levy, which augmented his existing army.

E. Anderson wrote, “…all Israel was involved in this triumphant procession.”

2 Samuel 6:2, He and all his men set out from Baalah of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name, the name of the LORD Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim that are on the ark. (NIV) I. David and his men left Jerusalem to go to Baalah of Judah for the purpose of bringing the ark of God to Jerusalem.

A. 1 Chronicles 13:6, David and all the Israelites with him went to Baalah of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who is enthroned between the cherubim—the ark that is called by the Name. (NIV) B. The ark of God had been at Baalah of Judah for seventy (70) years or more, Coffman observed, following the removal of the ark to that place at the request of the men of Bethshemesh.

1. 1 Samuel 6:19-21, But God struck down some of the men of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy of them to death because they had looked into the ark of the LORD. The people mourned because of the heavy blow the LORD had dealt them, and the men of Beth Shemesh asked, "Who can stand in the presence of the LORD, this holy God? To whom will the ark go up from here?" Then they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath Jearim, saying, "The Philistines have returned the ark of the LORD. Come down and take it up to your place." (NIV)

2. 1 Samuel 7:1-2, After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him, he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am,

living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent." 3. 1 Chronicles 13:1, David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. (NIV) 4. Baalah Judah is another name, the old pagan name, for Kiriath-jearim, also known as Kirgath-baal or Baalah. (See Clarke)

a. Joshua 15:9, 60, From the hilltop the boundary headed toward the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, came out at the towns of Mount Ephron and went down toward Baalah (that is, Kiriath Jearim). Kiriath Baal (that is, Kiriath Jearim) and Rabbah—two towns and their villages. (NIV) b. 1 Chronicles 13:6, David and all the Israelites with him went to Baalah of Judah (Kiriath Jearim) to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who is enthroned between the cherubim—the ark that is called by the Name. (NIV) c. The ark had been in Baalah Judah, Kiriath-jearim, for approximately seventy (70) years. (See Smith) d. Baalah of Judah was ten (10) miles from Jerusalem. (Smith)

A. God is “the Lord of the angelic armies of heaven, of the sun, moon and stars, of the armies of the nations of the world, and of the armies of Israel,” Coffman wrote quoting Willis. B. God’s throne is here said to be the mercy seat. C. The ark is called the ark of the Lord of hosts or there the name (Yahweh) of the Lord was invoked. (Clarke)

2 Samuel 6:3-4, They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart with the ark of God on it, and Ahio was walking in front of it. (NIV) I. They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, …

A. This was a violation of God’s clear instructions as to how the ark was to be transported.

1. It was to be carried by Levites with the use of poles. (Coffman) 2. Exodus 25:12-15, Cast four gold rings for it and fasten them to its four feet, with two rings on one side and two rings on the other. Then make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. Insert the poles into the rings on the sides of the chest to carry it. The poles are to remain in the rings of this ark; they are not to be removed. (NIV) 3. Exodus 37:1-5, Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood—two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high. He overlaid it with pure gold, both inside and out, and made a gold molding around it. He cast four gold rings for it and fastened them to its four

feet, with two rings on one side and two rings on the other. Then he made poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold. And he inserted the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry it. (NIV) 4. Numbers 7:9, But Moses did not give any to the Kohat-hites because they were to carry on their shoulders the holy things, for which they were responsible. (NIV) 5. Numbers 4:4-6, 15, "This is the work of the Kohathites in the Tent of Meeting: the care of the most holy things. When the camp is to move, Aaron and his sons are to go in and take down the shielding curtain and cover the ark of the testimony with it. Then they are to cover this with hides of sea cows, spread a cloth of solid blue over that and put the poles in place. (NIV)

B. The Lord had tolerated the moving of the ark by cart by the Philistines, but this did not change God’s law which David was obligated to obey.

1. 1 Chronicles 15:2, 12-13, Then David said, "No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him forever." He said to them, "You are the heads of the Levitical families; you and your fellow Levites are to consecrate yourselves and bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. 2. The respectful use of a new cart was not enough. The ark was to be carried by poles on the shoulders of Levites and this was not done.

a. Partial obedience of God’s word is not sufficient.

II. the house of Bainadab was on the (high place) hill (in Gibeah).

A. It is thought that at this time Abinadab was probably dead. (See Smith)

III. Uzzah and Ahio, sons (grandsons) of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart with the ark of God on it, …

A. Uzzah and Ahio, both Levites, should have known how to properly transport the ark. (Smith)

1. Evidently they had been caring for the ark for years. 2. Numbers 4:5, 15, 19-20, When the camp is to move, Aaron and his sons are to go in and take down the shielding curtain and cover the ark of the Testimony with it. "After Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy furnishings and all the holy articles, and when the camp is ready to move, the Kohathites are to come to do the carrying. But they must not touch the holy things or they will die. The Kohathites are to carry those things that are in the Tent of Meeting. So that they may live and not die when they come near the most holy things, do this for them: Aaron and his sons are to go into the sanctuary and assign to each man his work and what he is to carry. But the Kohathites must not go in to look at the holy things, even for a moment, or they will die." (NIV)

2 Samuel 6:5, David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the LORD, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals. (NIV) I. David and the whole house of Israel were (making merry) celebrating with all their might (enthusiastically, strength) before the Lord (before the ark), … II. with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals.

A. Harps were stringed instruments, the instrument mentioned more often than any other in the Bible. (Youngblood) B. Lyres (psalteries) were a kind of harp of a triangular shape. C. Tambourines (timbrel), a small drum. D. Sistrums (castanets, cornets) are mentioned only here in the Bible and consisted of rings hanging loosely on iron rods and making a tinkling sound. (Smith) E. Cymbals were percussion instruments which produced a clashing sound when struck together. (Smith)

B. Uzzah’s motives were good (Smith), but he was not authorized to touch the ark, a thing he should have known.

1. 1 Samuel 6:19-20, But God struck down some of the men of Beth Shemesh, putting seventy of them to death because they had looked into the ark of the LORD. "Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, is to have charge of the oil for the light, the fragrant incense, the regular grain offering and the anointing oil. He is to be in charge of the entire tabernacle and everything in it, including its holy furnishings and articles." The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "See that the Kohathite tribal clans are not cut off from the Levites. So that they may live and not die when they come near the most holy things, do this for them: Aaron and his sons are to go into the sanctuary and assign to each man his work and what he is to carry. B. What if Uzzah had done nothing and the ark had fallen off the cart?

II. therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God.

A. The death of Uzzah was an act of God in response to his disobedience.

A. David’s being angry with God didn’t change a thing.

1. We must learn not to question God! 2. “David blamed God for what happened to Uzzah, and used the event to opt out of his plan to move the ark to Jerusalem,” Smith wrote. 3. Other examples of people’s being angry with God are noted in the following references.

a. Genesis 4:5, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. (NIV) b. 1 Samuel 15, 11, "I am grieved that I have made Saul king, because he has turned away from me and has not carried out my instructions." B. Also, he (David) had learned from his earlier mistakes (See Smith as to how the ark was to be transported. C. Parallel references:

1. 1 Chronicles 15:1-29, After David had constructed buildings for himself in the City of David, he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it. Then David said, "No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him forever." David assembled all Israel in Jerusalem to bring up the ark of the LORD to the place he had prepared for it. He called together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites: From the descendants of Kohath, Uriel the leader and 120 relatives; from the descendants of Merari, Asaiah the leader and 220 relatives; from the descendants of Gershon, Joel the leader and 130 relatives; from the descendants of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the leader and 200 relatives; from the descendants of Hebron, Eliel the leader and 80 relatives; from the descendants of Uzziel, Amminadab the leader and 112 relatives. And the Levites carried the ark of God

with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the LORD. So David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of units of a thousand went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing. So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouts, with the sounding

of rams' horns and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps. As the ark of the covenant of the LORD was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. (NIV) 2. 1 Chronicles 16:1-6, They brought the ark of God and set it inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and they presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before God. After David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD. Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each Israelite man and woman. He appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, to make petition, to give thanks, and to praise the LORD, the God of Israel: Asaph was the chief, Zechariah second, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel. I. David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel –

A. “Michal’s approval or disapproval of his behavior was wholly irrelevant,” Smith wrote. “David in no way regretted what he had done. He valued the opinion of the slave girls more than the opinion of his haughty wife.” B. God chose humble David to be king rather than arrogant, prideful Saul!

II. I will celebrate before the Lord. 2 Samuel 6:22, I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor." (NIV) I. I will become even more undignified (vile) than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes.

A. Saul became arrogant and proud, and God rejected him. B. David said he would be humble before God who chose him to be king of all Israel.

I. And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.

A. This may not mean Michal had no children but, rather, from this time to the time of her death David had no further sexual relations with her. They were permanently estranged.

1. 1 Samuel 21:10, That day David fled from Saul and went to Achish king of Gath.
