WORTH REPEATING The Special’s quotes from Saratoga

Connie BushSpring Conversation. Exercise riders talk it over while passing the gate on the Oklahoma training track in April (yes, April).

“All the Walshes are the same.”Jump jockey Robbie Walsh after an old friend of his brothers’,

Billy Houston from Great Neck, said hello Thursday; we’re thinking Joe or Peter, but maybe Tommy and Michael (no relation)

“We got bumped a couple of times, into the first turn and again in the stretch, she still fight, she’s not that big, but she’s a fighter.”

Jockey Julien Leparoux, after winning the Lake George with Centre Court

“Black.”Jockey Rosie Napravnik, when asked how her

toe was doing, a day after breaking it

“Nothing.”Jockey John velazquez, when asked what

he did while recovering from a summer fall

“It’s a warm-up jacket. I don’t walk in it.”Ryan Clancy, hotwalker, while wearing a clean red running jacket before first set Wednesday morning

“An unfortunate name for Google.”The Special’s Joe Clancy when Googling for images of William Punk (don’t do it)

“Is it that late?”Billy Fuccillo when told it was 8 o’clock in the morning

“At least it’s not Boston Red Sox.”Lucca Cristiano, 7, when handed a

Sovereign Stable jacket from Matt Gatsas

“How much do I owe you for that?”Gary Sciacca, when handed a Special

by Lucca Cristiano Friday morning

“Let me see how the race comes up first.”Trainer Bruce Levine when asked for his one winner

“What do you want me to do, hit you over the head?”Levine, after he won his first race of the meet

“50 down. 20 to go.”Trainer Gary Sciacca, on his weight-loss program

“I might have heard of it.”Mitch Levites, when asked if he knew where

Putnam Market is on Broadway

“I’m in the palm-tree mode.”Trainer Tom Proctor when asked how many he was bringing to

Saratoga this summer; sounds like he’s going to Del Mar

“I just want to go. I want to put my book on tape in and go. I don’t want to talk to anybody.”

EIGHT 2-year-old wins in 2012and just getting started!

Big bays and strapping chestnuts fill the stalls of Jonathan Sheppard’s Sara-toga string. They’re nearly all turf hors-es and steeplechasers, homebred geld-ings mostly, though there’s also an old gray Australian mare around.

Then there’s Ever So Lucky. He looks the part – plain bay, without a speck of white, a little rough or coarse on first glance. Unrefined for sure, and dirty like the rest of the small group at the Oklahoma Annex. If Sheppard told you he was a 6-year-old Royal Anthem aim-ing to run over jumps in the fall you wouldn’t have to squint. Of course, Ever So Lucky is none of those things. He’s not a hurdler, not a gelding, not old. The 3-year-old might be the fastest horse Sheppard has ever trained – and he trained Storm Cat –and could climb back into the division’s upper reaches with a win in today’s $100,000 Curlin Stakes. The 9-furlong Curlin, the eighth of nine on the twilight card, drew a field of eight and offers an option to sopho-mores not quite ready for Saturday’s Jim Dandy or other major tests. Ever So

Lucky fits the description.“He had a nice little comeback prep

race, he’s been training well, and we’re lucky that this race is here,” Sheppard said Wednesday. “We don’t have to try him in the Jim Dandy right away. We’ve got to test the waters and see where we are though. He’s doing great, he’s a nice horse.”

As if trying to prove his trainer’s point, Ever So Lucky showed off in the round pen Wednesday – he rolled imme-diately, like it was all he wanted to do in the world. Sufficiently dirty, he sniffed and snorted, leapt, struck out with his front legs, kicked back with his hind. Dirt flew. Horses noticed. Humans stopped. The neighbor’s cat hid in the bushes. The son of Indian Charlie is an athlete, no doubt, and he gets another chance to prove it today as the 3-1 sec-ond choice in the restricted stakes.

A $600,000 2-year-old purchase at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic last May by Augustin Stable, Ever So Lucky came to Sheppard’s Pennsylvania farm with

some credentials. Despite the trainer’s intentions, that reputation got out – eventually.

“I always liked him from the start, but I knew stuff about him that the ex-ercise riders didn’t,” Sheppard said. “I knew how much he cost, I knew how

fast he worked (at the sale), I knew how well-bred he was. To them he was just another horse and nobody really thought too much of him. But whenever he breezed, he was always just cruising

When it comes to Graded STaKeS SucceSS...

more than half of Saratoga’s Grade One wins were Keeneland graduates last season:

Havre de Grace • Stay Thirsty • Grace Hall • Tizway...and more.

Already in 2012, 95 graded stakes winners are graduates of Keeneland Sales, including Derby

and Preakness winner I’ll Have anotHer.

With quality at every level, why buy anywhere else?

Plan to attend tHe Keeneland SePtember YearlIng Sale, begInnIng mondaY, SePtember 10tH.

and the other 2-year-olds were driv-ing and working to keep up with him. Eventually, people began to realize how good he was.”

The son of Indian Charlie made his debut at Churchill Downs Nov. 11, go-ing off at 4-5 in a 6 1/2-furlong maid-

en. He won by 3 1/4 lengths, without stressing himself. Fifteen days later, Ever So Lucky finished second to Gem-ologist in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill and the 2012 Kentucky Derby conversations started. Nothing if not patient, Sheppard prob-ably wishes they hadn’t.

Ever So Lucky’s 3-year-old cam-paign made more stops than the Hor-sin’ Around Trolley, derailed at various times by a slow work, a fast work, a

grabbed quarter, a thyroid condition. The Kentucky-bred started just once in Florida, finishing third behind Trinni-berg in the Grade 3 Swale at 7 furlongs in March. Sheppard went to the Blue Grass at Keeneland with optimism, but his horse galloped in 10th behind Dulla-han and Hansen.

“That’s still a mystery,” Sheppard said. “He finally had uninterrupted training, he had an extremely good work, very fast time but did it nicely. I thought he’d run really well that day. Then the doors opened, he broke half a step slow, was drawn outside and that was about the end of it. We couldn’t find much wrong with him after the race. He seemed a little dull, a little flat.”

Blood tests revealed the abnormal thyroid count, which may have contrib-uted to the poor performance, but also may have been nothing. Sheppard went for the big regroup, opting for nearly three months away from the races and a summer campaign – which started with an allowance romp (7 1/2 lengths) at Delaware Park July 5.

The trainer still has questions about his horse, and looks to get some an-swers today.

“I’m not convinced he’s really good at that distance,” Sheppard said. “Ob-viously, he can beat lesser horses at any old distance, but whether he’s really ca-pable of beating some of the best hors-es in the country going a mile and an eighth I have some reservations about. But he does have a way of doing things so easily that makes you think.”

Favoritism for the Curlin goes to Street Life, who finished fourth in the Belmont Stakes last month for Mag-

nolia Racing Stable and Hidden Brook Farm. Trained by Chad Brown, the son of Street Sense does his best running late and has won twice in six career starts, all this year. Jose Lezcano rides at 5-2.

Bob LaPenta’s Easter Gift won the first two starts of his career this spring, then finished a neck behind Le Bernar-din in the Grade 3 Pegasus at Mon-mouth last month. Trainer Nick Zito’s son of Hard Spun has trained at Sara-toga for months and gets Javier Castel-lano at 7-2. Phipps Stable’s Reload (Ed-die Castro, 5-1) sports a single win in three starts, but missed by a neck in a Belmont Park allowance last time for Shug McGaughey.

Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Political-lycorrect towers over the field with 10 lifetime starts and has tangled with Daddy Nose Best, Dullahan, Atigun, Teeth Of The Dog and others. The son of Kitten’s Joy ran here last summer as a 2-year-old and comes off a second in the Grade 3 Ohio Derby. Wesley Ward named Josel Rosario to ride at 8-1.

Morgan’s Guerrilla (Ramon Domin-guez, 10-1) comes off a third in the Dw-yer for trainer Mike Maker and own-ers Tom Conway, Jack Conway, Trey Thornton and Gary Carter. In his only try at 1 1/8 miles, the son of Ghostzap-per placed second in the Illinois Derby. Summit Thoroughbreds’ Love To Run lost his first six starts, before winning two in a row at Belmont Park for trainer John Kimmel. The son of Pulpit is 12-1 and gets Junior Alvarado. Fifth in the Belmont, Five Sixteeen looks for his sec-ond lifetime win for trainer Dominick Schettino. The son of Invasor gets Rosie Napravnik at 15-1.

Bona

Venture Stables

For five straight years in the early 1990s, the Yaddo Handicap was domi-nated by a single horse. From ages 3-7, the New York-bred Irish Linnet, re-turned each summer to Saratoga, every year capturing the Yaddo. An amaz-ing feat in and of itself, adding to the achievement was the fact that she never won by less than a length, with her larg-est margin of victory at 8 lengths, in her last race at the Spa. She also holds the speed record for the stakes set in 1994 at 1:46.45.

One of two stakes races Friday, the Irish Linnet pits New York-bred fillies and mares, 3-years-old and up, at a mile on the inner turf. This year’s edition fea-tures a field of worthy contenders, none more so than the David Donk-trained Hessonite.

Owned by William Punk Jr. and Phil DiLeo, the daughter of Freud and Lakab is entering today’s race off two consecutive losses to the talented filly Gitchee Goomie, falling to the leader of the New York-bred division by a half-

length in the Mount Vernon at Belmont and the Grade III Dr. James Penny at Parx.

Regular pilot Ramon Dominguez takes the call aboard the 4-year-old filly.

“In the Mount Vernon we had a little bit of a tough trip,” said Donk. “We got boxed in, a really good ride by (Alan) Garcia to keep us boxed in a long ways and we got out late. Ramon felt that he didn’t give her a good ride and he got her beat. It was a very good effort. We came back in Philadelphia and Gitchee Goomie got first jump on me. I thought they both ran a really good race. I was probably second best that day.”

As Gitchee Goomie sits out the Irish Linnet, it’s time for Hessonite to be the favorite for a change. The beautiful chestnut filly with a blaze running the length of her nose is back at Saratoga where she won the New York Stallion Series Stakes last season.

“She beat the boys that day. Just a typical Ramon Dominguez ride,” Donk

said. “He was very patient off a pretty slow pace that day, but finished really well, with a big turn of foot and it was nice to win up here.”

Donk isn’t reserved about his horse’s chances either.

“She’ll be a pretty heavy favorite. I’m not going to be a surprise to anybody. She’s a very good filly. She was New

York Bred Filly 3-year-old last year,” Donk said. “We’re supposed to run well. We just hope we do. We’ll let Ra-mon do his own thing. I’m never going to tell him what to do.”

Looking beyond Friday, Donk has aspirations of entering Hessonite in an-

other race at Saratoga, a step beyond the Irish Linnet.

“She’ll run again, probably in the Yaddo, back for New York-breds,” Donk said. “That’s probably the most logical place. Someday we’d love to win a graded stake with her.”

In the meantime, she’s been taking well to the track here at Saratoga.

“We shipped everybody up on the Monday before the meet, that’s here at the moment, so she’s been here since then. She breezed the other day,” said Donk. “She bounced out of her race re-ally well. She’s a grass horse. We have to take advantage of the grass racing while we have it. I think my filly would appreciate running farther some day. I’d love to run her a mile and a quarter at some point.”

As for the rest of the field, Hessonite can expect stiff competition. The field of eight consists of several talented and proven fillies and mares.

The 5-year-old Mystic City, owned by Langpap Stable, has experience in the Irish Linnet. Last year the Anthony Ferraro-trained mare placed 4th after taking both turns three wide. She’s gar-nered over $200,000 in career earnings and recently proved she can run the distance on the turf. On July 3, Mystic City tallied her fourth career win, con-vincingly, in the Windward Stakes at Pr-esque Isle Downs.

Drawing the first post position in the Irish Linnet is the Dominick Schettino-trained and Joemar Stable’s Lemon

Tiger. Although she was shut out last year at the Spa, she started off the year on a high note with a victory at Aque-duct. She managed to pass six horses in the final quarter mile on her way to a 2-length victory.

Not to be forgotten, 8-year-old Karakorum Elektra has 11 wins in 32 starts and over $400,000 in earnings for Karakorum Farm and trainer Linda Rice. She is proving the old girls can still hang with the young guns. On June 28, she edged out her competition for her first win of the year. Off of a quiet win-ter, this will be just her third start since October.

Graham Motion increases the task for Gallaghers Stud Inimitable Roma-nee who exits a win against first-level state-bred fillies and mares July 4.

John Hertler enters Considerate, owned by Edward Messina and Buck Butler, who will try to snap a three-race losing streak. She finished 8th in last year’s Irish Linnet.

Great Gracie Dane represents trainer Rick Dutrow and owner Eric Fein. The 5-year-old exits three consecutive stakes appearances.

Mary P. Jones spots experience to all rivals in the Irish Linnet. The daugh-ter of Smarty Jones makes her fourth career start, fresh out of a maiden win for Akindale Farm and trainer Kathleen Feron.

There’s the definite possibility that some of these horses could be seen again in the Yaddo Aug. 17. In store, could be another showdown between Gitchee Goomie and Hessonite, but for any horse, the pressing issue is a victory in today’s Irish Linnet.

I SGet Stormy, the mahogany bay with a wide blaze

running the length of his nose, and white stockings on all four legs, is ready. Working through 5 furlongs Mon-day, the Tom Bush trained son of Stormy Atlantic and Foolish Gal, is preparing for another rendition in the Grade II turf race, the Fourstardave Handicap Aug. 11.

Two years ago, on a warm and sunny day at the Spa, the 4-year-old blazed through the 1 1/16-mile Fourstardave in a blistering 1:38:91. Get Stormy near-ly broke the track record for the distance on the grass, coincidentally set by the race’s namesake and iconic horse, Fourstardave.

As for this year’s race, Bush sounds confident while discussing how the now 6-year-old has been preparing.

“He’s doing very well, he’s had two works since he ran in the race at Monmouth. He’s going to work probably two more times before the Fourstardave and hopefully things will go well. He’s doing plenty well enough.”

Get Stormy blitzed through a breeze over the Okla-homa turf Monday, scorching home in 57:48 seconds for 5 furlongs, the day’s best time on the turf.

“Now, that’s the real thing,” Bush said as he walked away from the turf course. “None of that action you see when he gallops on the dirt.”

Although confident, Bush has reason to be cau-tious. Last year, while preparing to defend his title in the Fourstardave, Get Stormy injured himself when forced to pull up hastily while breezing, as a loose horse ran rampant on the track.

But that was last year, and Get Stormy is back and in strong form, already claiming a Grade I victory in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap.

By the looks of it, Bush’s horses seem to be taking well to the track here at Saratoga.

Chester and Mary Broman’s filly Beautiful But Blue is off to a terrific start in 2012, winning two of her three starts.

“Besides Get Stormy, the other nice one we have in the barn is Beautiful But Blue. She won the Bouwerie at Belmont and she’s going to run probably in the next New York-bred stake against older fillies.”

However, she’s run into trouble at Saratoga before. The first two starts of her career came at Saratoga last year. Both times, she placed fourth, and it doesn’t ap-pear like this year’s meet will be any easier.

Smooth Storm

LubriSyn & Re-Borne wish the

best of luck to all of the

horses, trainers, and owners

on our team at Saratoga 2012.

A special thanks to Todd Pletcher

who has put his trust in the

LubriSyn family of products for many years.

Here’s to your continued success!

“I don’t know about the idea of run-ning against older fillies but they don’t have anything for the 3-year-old, New York bred fillies. We’re kind of stuck there. She’s won four of her last five starts so she’s a proven filly,” said Bush.

As for the rest of the horses stabled in his barn just beyond the Morning Line Kitchen on the main track (with a few sharing space with Jimmy Toner across the way), things are looking positive.

“I’ve got some 2-year-olds that are coming along. They’re not immediately ready, but they’re getting close. Some of them are pretty far along on their gate work. I’ve got a Street Sense filly and

a Giant’s Causeway filly for Mary Sul-livan and I have a real nice Hook And Ladder filly for Chester Broman,” said Bush. “Chester gives me a couple of 2-year-olds every year and this one is out of one of his better mares. She’s an attractive filly physically. We’re hoping she’s going to do something for us.”

The Hook and Ladder filly, Wild Child, is at Saratoga and getting ready to go.

“She still has to go back and break from the gate one more time,” Bush said. “She’s probably a couple of weeks away.”

Just another horse looking to get her career started at Saratoga.

“Nothing like being here at Sarato-ga,” Bush said. “It’s good for the horses and good for the people.”

British Spotlight: Questing“You never quite know what you’re likely to bump into in a Newbury maiden,” jockey William

Buick noted 13 months ago after winning just that type of race at the Berkshire track aboard a 2-year-old Hard Spun filly.

Fast forward to last Saturday and Buick’s words seem even more prophetic as that maiden vic-tory turned out to be the first step on the road to Grade 1 glory at Saratoga for Questing.

Saturday’s Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks may have had an all-American feel thanks to the Hard Spun-sired 1-2, but the victorious Questing brought with her a little bit of Britain to the second day of the Saratoga meet.

Godolphin’s British-bred filly, whose dam Chercheuse was a dual Listed winner at sprint trips in France, began her racing career with John Gosden, whose stable is in flying form at the moment.

Victory at Newbury was followed by two forays into stakes company, both of which ended in defeat by just a quarter-length, when third in the Group III Prestige Stakes at Goodwood and again when second in the Group III Oh So Sharp Stakes.

Fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on her first attempt at dirt last November, it was no surprise that Questing was switched back to the grass, particularly given her family, but she proved in emphatic terms with her dirt victory on Saturday that this formerly British filly has now gone native for Godolphin and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.

For Linda McBurney, the defining moment was when she decided to keep Mommie’s Luke, a gelding she and her husband owned and raced, as her personal project. The small gelding, only 15.2 hands, couldn’t break his maiden in six starts. He was too slow to be competitive as a race horse but has been impressive in the show ring.

“I remember the first time I asked him to jump a cross rail I was amazed by the amount of scope he had going over the small fence. For such a little guy his stride is huge. Like most Thoroughbreds he has a huge heart, is brave, and extremely athletic. For the past several years he has successfully competed in the adult and amateur jumpers against the big expensive Warmbloods. He can compete with the best of them and lately he has been beating them. He’s actually won more money for us as a jumper than as a race horse.”

Mommie’s Luke shows under the name Less Is More and has won multiple championships at rated open shows across the East Coast. His biggest accomplishment was this month when he won the $10,000 Adult Jumper Classic at HITS-on-the-Hudson show against 65 other horses.

Mommie’s Luke

Dennis Narlinger suggested. Michelle Nihei accept-ed – grudgingly.

Immediately after Artest faded to seventh in a mile turf race on Opening Day, the owner suggested a six-day turnaround for the 5 1/2-furlong Quick Call.

“He said, ‘Just think about it, Michelle, it’s your call, totally, if you don’t want to go, we won’t go, if you’ve got a reason not to go, then don’t go,’ ” Nihei said. “I was looking, I was looking hard, he cleaned up every oat, he gave me no reasons. I said, ‘Dennis, if I really thought there was a reason, I would tell you, but he’s not helping me. He’s looking like he wants to run.’ ”

Six days after his initial flop, Artest showed he wanted to run, rallying from sixth to score by 1 1/2 lengths in the $100,000 turf sprint. Ridden by John Velazquez, his first win since returning from a col-larbone injury, Artest wore down Drago’s Best and Gentlemans Code to pick up his third career victory.

Artest broke well and Velazquez kept on his toes to find a spot in fifth as Gentlemans Code and Drago’s Best drilled a quarter mile in 21.91 seconds. Through a half in 44.56, the two leaders appeared to have the rest of the field on the run, but Velazquez bided his time, saving ground along the portable rail as Dra-go’s Best began to ease away from Gentlemans Cove. Velazquez urged Artest inside a phalanx of horses and to the outside of Gentlemans Cove and Drago’s Best. In doubt for the length of the stretch, it was over in a couple of strides as Artest blew past Drago’s Best to

win going away, finishing 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:02.19.Nihei wasn’t taking any credit for the old-school

move.“I look in the Form and see people doing this and

say ‘What are you doing?’ The whole time, I’m going, ‘This is so not not me.’ But you can’t let that rule your world,” Nihei said. “You’ve got somebody saying, ‘let’s try it,’ the horse is going, ‘I can deal with that,’ and I’m saying, ‘I don’t like it, but we’ll go.’ I don’t take any credit, this was Dennis and Johnny V. saying yes, he always rides well for me.”Originally trained by Rick Dutrow, Artest won his

debut last summer and missed five months before fin-ishing second in an Aqueduct allowance. Dutrow tried him long, he faded to fourth before shipping to Gulf-stream for his turf debut in January. Rated in sixth, he skipped to a comfortable 1-length win. Seven months later, he resurfaced with Nihei in a mile-turf race at Saratoga.

Nihei had trained Artest since arriving in Saratoga in May. She entered him confidently.

“I love this horse, I thought he was a two-turner, want to go all day, when he works five-eighths, he gal-lops out 7 to a mile, he pulls all the way and you can’t pull him up and he wouldn’t blow out a candle. It’s all about two turns, but it’s not his style,” Nihei said. “If you could get enough speed in a two-turn race, where he had something to chase, maybe it would work out differently, but you’re not going to get it, he needs them to go in 21, 46 in front of him.”

That didn’t happen in the allowance on Opening Day where Artest wound up on the lead through a quarter in 24.87 and a half in 49.66. He packed it in like a Manhattanite on Sunday night in Saratoga.

“We had been sitting on this horse for three, maybe three and a half weeks, trying to get in at Belmont, he was ready, ready, ready. We had nowhere to go, so we waited. This horse was a little bit over the top. They asked if he got tired. I said, ‘There is no chance he’s tired, no chance.’ They said, ‘he didn’t do much in that race, can we think of it as a work?’ I said, ‘he’s sound as a dollar, he scoped perfect, he’s eating every oat, there’s nothing to tell me that I shouldn’t go here. I would like to tell you he’s got a temperature, a foot or he’s got something but it didn’t come up that way.’ ”

Nihei treated Artest just like she does all her run-ners, with a couple of walk days, a little bit of jogging and right about the time when they go back to gallop-

ing, he went back to the paddock to give Nihei her first stakes win at Saratoga.

“I had to think about it when they asked me if I had ever won a stake here, and I haven’t. Prince (Will I Am) won a Grade I at Belmont and we’ve had other stake successes, it’s always rewarding but it’s all about the horse for me, figuring out the horse,” Nihei said. “It didn’t matter if today was a $20,000 claiming race or if it was this race, I wanted to see if this was going to work for him, otherwise, I had no idea where I was going to go, because he’s a good horse, but he’s just confusing. I had a big question mark this time.”

Velazquez helped erase that question mark with another ground-saving, wait-until-you-straighten, run-’em-down-late turf stencil. The soon-to-be Hall of Famer returned from a broken collarbone Wednesday, trying to navigate the same trip aboard Stephanie’s Kitten in the Lake George but was stopped late in a roughly run race. This time it worked.

“It feels great, get it out of the system right away, after a big disappointment from yesterday,” Velazquez said. “I feel very good. I’m 100 percent to ride one or two, maybe three horses in a day. You have to build your stamina, I’ve been working two or three a day and one or two in the afternoon. I’ll build it up little by little until I get my stamina to ride more horses.”

As for instincts, they never rust, even if they don’t always get it right.

“It’s all there, buddy. That’s all there, that hasn’t gone anywhere, other than getting (screwed) yester-day. I just didn’t anticipate Javier (Castellano) coming back out. I guess my instincts failed me or Javier failed me, he didn’t do it on purpose, I know that, his horse was getting tired, he hit her left-handed she went out, what I’m saying is when you know the riders in front of you, you’re expecting something,” Velazquez said. “You asked me how my instincts were, I thought they were good until that moment, I thought I was riding a good race until I steadied and had to go back to where I was. Today, I did the same thing, I saved the ground, waited until I thought it was time to go, and everybody stayed straight.”

Jockey Robbie Walsh hadn’t won a race since March. Trainer Richard Val-entine last found Saratoga success in 2005. Their horse, Demonstrative, lost his most recent start by 30 lengths.

But it all made sense afterward when Jacqueline Ohrstrom’s 5-year-old charged to an upset win in the $75,000 Jonathan Kiser Memorial novice stakes, the first steeplechase of the meet, Thurs-day. Second twice here last year, the son of Elusive Quality erased a string of bad form with an inspired effort – outrun-ning Wanganui by 2 lengths late with early leader Baltic Shore third.

“It’s huge, just huge,” said Walsh. “It’s so nice for that horse to come back to his form. It’s just great for the horse to get back and show us what he is. He’s that good. He did not jump the way he can the last time. It was so unlike him and massive for him to come back the way he did today.”

Going back to 2010, Demonstrative went through a streak of nine consecu-tive races where he finished in the top three. Victories came in a 3-year-old stakes in 2010, an allowance hurdle last

April and a good novice stakes at Bel-mont Park last summer. He backed up that form with runner-up efforts in two stakes here last summer and a second to eventual Eclipse Award winner Black Jack Blues last fall.

This year? Different story. He lost Walsh with a jumping mistake while losing a novice race in late April, and returned with the worst effort of his ca-reer in the Zeke Ferguson Memorial at Colonial Downs in June. Hence Thurs-day’s 15-1 price, far above several less experienced and accomplished rivals.

Like Walsh, Valentine was grateful for the return to form and shed some light on the problems.

“He has a very good work ethic and last year we ran him eight times and he showed up and was consistent,” said the Virginia-based trainer. “This year, I felt like I was trying to set him up for more limited opportunities. Then the ground was so hard, I got a little backed up. For Saratoga, I was thinking of waiting to run him in the second novice race (Aug. 16).”

What’s more, bloodwork taken af-ter the Ferguson debacle (sixth, beaten 30 lengths) showed Demonstrative was “off the charts” with EPM. Carried by opossums, the infection can affect the central nervous system of horses and can spread to the brain or spinal col-umn. Once detected, EPM can be treat-ed with medication and rest but detec-tion can be the problem.

“He wasn’t sweating as much as we would have liked, and I guess that’s an indication of EPM but when you think of a horse with EPM you think of a horse that’s neurologic, not a horse that has dapples and a good coat and is eating up well,” said Valentine. “We treated him for ulcers, thinking that was the deal, but it wasn’t. Once we got the blood back we treated him aggressively and he improved.”

Demonstrative was one of the brave

few who galloped around in the mud on Open House day at the meet, as a final prep, and pointed for the Kiser. Re-served early, the winner came through a narrow gap on the final turn, got out-side Baltic Shore and Wanganui, took the lead with a big jump at the last and drew off late.

“We were going a solid gallop the whole way and his jumping just kept me in a good spot all the time,” said Walsh. “He was brave, went through a little gap turning the bend, then got out-side and just took off with me. I’m very proud of him.”

Bred by Gainsborough in Kentucky, Demonstrative raced in England for Sheikh Hamdan and trainer Mark John-ston. Valentine bought the son of Elu-sive Quality for 25,000 guineas at the Tattersalls July Sale in 2010. He’s won five times and earned $163,800 since.

For horses, it often takes time to figure out where they are comfortable, whether it be at 6 furlongs or a mile, dirt or turf, or as a pacesetter as opposed to in the midst of the pack with dirt in their faces. Phipps Stable’s Sea Island was no different.

On the New York circuit, bounced around between Aqueduct, Belmont, and Saratoga, it was clear that trainer Shug McGaughey couldn’t find a race where his filly felt comfortable. In her first race, she never seemed to find her footing, never in contention, finish-ing next to last, in a 7-furlong maiden special weight at the end of last year’s Saratoga meet.

“I knew she wanted to run long,” McGaughey said. “Seven-eighths of a mile for 2-year-olds [is] usually not that quick.”

The daughter of Pulpit finished the year strong however, with two consecutive seconds downstate.

“She came back,” McGaughey said. “We stretched her out in her other two races as a 2-year-old, and they were very good.”

As a 3-year-old, she had an explosive start to 2012. With back-to-back wins, she seemed primed for a breakout year, but McGaughey couldn’t seem to find races.

“We brought her back and this year I didn’t have any place to run her so I had to run her in that little stake,” he said of the Victory Ride at Belmont Park July 7. “It was really a fast run race and she’s just not fast, but hopefully it set her up for today.”

Fourth there, Sea Island was sent off at 15-1 in Thursday’s second race, behind heavy favorite St. John’s River, who had amassed nearly $600,000 in earnings.

the field and win the 1 1/8-mile optional claimer by 3 1/2 lengths over heavy favorite St. John’s River, who was a nose in front of Acting Happy.

“I’ve been dying to run her around two turns. When I looked up I thought I’d dug myself in a little deep with St. John’s River being in there,” said McGaughey. “I knew she’d run that far and I told Jose, ‘She’ll run that far. Whether she can beat these [horses] I don’t know.’ But I was very impressed with the way she ran today.”

• With a third and a second under her belt, it seemed natural that Our Sugar Bear Stable’s Dynamic Star would make it to the winner’s circle at some point.

Thursday’s 6-furlong third race, a $20,000 maiden claimer, proved to be the filly’s time.

“In Saratoga you always just want to try to win a race, so we dropped her a little cheaper than she’s been running,” trainer Bruce Brown said.

Starting from post five, she broke out of the gate strong and held the lead throughout, though the race was not without its drama.

With a 2-length lead turning for home, the 3-year-old daughter of Trippi was pushed to the brink by Perimele over the final furlong. Dynamic Star held on on to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:12.37.

“I think her class showed today,” Brown said. “She was just good enough to beat this bunch.”

He went on to echo a familiar sentiment among trainers.

“She really likes it up here. It’s a combination of the air and the water. It’s a lot different here than where (horses) are the rest of the year.”

It was the first of two wins on the day for jockey Rajiv Maragh.

• Although rain threatened all day, one man found himself basked in rays of sunlight while making his way to the winner’s circle twice. After winning with Sea Island, McGaughey again received congratula-tions after capturing the 1-mile seventh race, a filly/mare maiden on the turf.

The only horse with turf experience at Saratoga, Phipps Stable’s Abaco finally broke her maiden Thurs-day after nine attempts and four seconds.

The chestnut daughter of Giant’s Causeway and Grade 3 winner Cat Cay found her way across the finish line 1 1/4 lengths clear of Holiday’s Jewel and Despite Her Form. With Javier Castellano aboard, Ab-aco found herself in trouble early, falling more than 10 lengths off the lead after a quarter in 23:51 seconds.

“She didn’t break good. She was a little bit anxious in the gate. He put his hand up in front of her so she got away bad,” said McGaughey. “As Javier said, it might have helped her a little bit because there was a lot of trouble going into the first turn, we were sort of relaxed in the back. A mile is probably a little bit shorter than she wanted to run. She finished up really strong. He found a hole for her around the eighth pole and got through it and she was good enough to win.”

As for the double, McGaughey didn’t say he pre-dicted it.

“We came into the day thinking we had some chances,” he said. “It always feels good to win.”

He’d be 34. Retired? Maybe. A champion many times over? Surely. One of the all time greats? No doubt. A name you’d put there with Aitcheson, Fish-back, Adams, Smithwick, Walsh? Most likely.

About this time every year, I think about Jonathan Kiser. He was the best American steeplechase jockey of his generation – a little behind Blythe Miller, a little ahead of the Irish/English brigade that occupies the program now.

Kiser won 90 races and two championships in less than five full seasons. He died in the summer of 2000, from a freak accident that had nothing to do with horses. He was 22 and passed away a few days before the Saratoga Open House meet of 2000. He’d won 16 races at the season’s midway point that year, looked loaded for the meet and was assured of his thrid cham-pionship in four years. And then he was gone.

The jockeys honored him by wearing black helmet covers the rest of that season.

Now, Saratoga and the sport honor him with a race, his race. The Jonathan Kiser Memorial became a stakes in 2007 and was run as the first race yester-day. His family came to town. People thought of him again, told a few stories, raised a glass, laughed at a memory, walked around handicapped parking spaces for good luck.

Kiser made you think of him in life, with an attitude equal parts confidence and innocence. OK, maybe not equal. He was young, talented, daring, opinionated. He lived hard, played hard, worked hard, inspired people.

He rode horses the way the rest of us rode bicycles or walked down the street – naturally and without ef-fort, or so it seemed.

He won races for main employer Tom Voss in great heaps – riding Approaching Squall, Brigade Of Guards, Teb’s Bend, Ironfist, Lapseng, Petroski, Soar-ingoverseattle. When Voss didn’t have mounts, Kiser took legs up from Jonathan Sheppard, Bruce Miller, anyone who could get him. Kiser rode a runaway named Sundin for Sheppard and they connected bet-ter than Lego pieces. Each was bold, fast, good. They won four times together. At Belmont in 2000, Kiser’s last ride, he rode Yellowroad for Miller – upsetting heavy favorite Pompeyo – in another deft, magical, sublime performance.

Kiser sat on a horse better than other jockeys. Just sat there, looking more smooth and better collected than the others. At rest. In a race, he was even bet-ter. He hovered over the saddle, connected to the horse from the stirrups, through his feet, into his legs and up to his brain. Afterward, he’d talk about wins with a mix of calculated calm and “oh-hell-I-don’t-know” glee. He was a great interview. For a kid, he worked hard to know the history – he’d talk about Joe Aitcheson (the best, ever) with reverence. At 17, Kiser rode in the Maryland Hunt Cup before he turned pro-fessional – getting around on a longshot when nobody thought he would.

As usual, the Kiser winner – in this case trainer

Richard Valentine – had a connection to the kid.“I didn’t know him well, but I remember him call-

ing me Mr. Valentine,” he said. “I thought it was the funniest thing. I kept thinking I was as much of a young hooligan as he was. He didn’t need to call me Mr.”

Like anyone in the game, Valentine also recalled Kiser’s skill.

“What a beautiful rider, I remember picking up a magazine and he was riding in jodphurs, as a junior in the Green Spring Old Fashioned,” he said. “I remem-ber thinking ‘Who is this kid?’ He was so stylish. It’s nice to win a race in honor of an American jockey who could hold his own with the Irish and English boys who are riding now. He’d probably still be doing it at that level. It’s nice they keep his memory going. I love running in the race, I love coming up here for it. Hope-fully there are many more of these for years to come.”

THE REAL QUICk CALL. Quick Call, a tough 1984 gelding by Quack, was a perennial favorite at Saratoga back in the late 1980s and early ’90s. Racing in five consecutive years at Saratoga, he won nine times. Over his career, he raced 86 times and won $807,817 for Hall of Fame trainer Sidney Watters Jr. For the last 17 years, he has been a perennial favorite at TRF’s Wallkill Correctional Facility Farm where he resides with other old timers like Extended Forecast, 29, and Sir Prize Birthday, 32. Just like his racing days, he’s competitive and a little pushy. He keeps his caretakers on their toes and gives them good training if they choose to work with race-horses when they are released. He weighs a lot now, and likes to push that weight around.

Personalized legal expertise, where

every client is ourmost important client.

He won six races Sunday. He was asked to raise six fingers in the air, he did it reluctantly. He posed with kids. Signed autographs. Answered every question. Went to dinner with his agent Steve Rushing and never men-tioned a ride, a race, the feat. Drove his Honda Civic to the track in the morning.

Another day. Another six wins. Simply, Ramon Dominguez.

Sure, I’m impressed with the wins, the rides, the achievements. I’m more impressed that he hasn’t changed.

I met Ramon Dominguez at Saratoga in 1999, I was writing a daily journal (they weren’t called blogs back then) on the Internet, that would meld into the book, Saratoga Days. Dominguez won a stakes late in the meet.

Here’s the excerpt from Saratoga Days – 13 years later, thousands of winners, Eclipse Awards and nothing has changed.

Welcome to AmericaThursday, September 2

The dream continues. Phi Beta Doc and Ramon Dominguez. They won the Saranac on Wednesday.

Life is about dreams. Horse racing is the sport of dreams. Saratoga, that’s life and horse racing at their best. Saratoga – Dreamland.

I caught Ramon Dominguez on his way to the jocks’ room after his first Saratoga stakes victory. I love ask-

ing a guy like that, a 22-year-old jockey at his finest hour, if I can talk for a minute. Here’s our conversation.

What’s it like? “It’s exciting to win a stake anywhere but even

more here because you’re competing with the best of the best.”

It looked like your horse lugged in last time (he finished second in the National Museum of Racing Stakes on August 9 at Saratoga).

“I was going to win the race last time if my horse ran straight. This one releases a little pressure, because you feel like you should win because you’re on the best horse in the race. That’s what makes the pres-sure, you know if things don’t work out for the best that you’ll be taken off.”

That was going through your mind before this race?“No, it wasn’t, because I am very confident and

these people have been supporting me real good. You just know it’s there. You know?”

Yeah, I’m a steeplechase jockey.“I know, I’ve seen you at Delaware. So you know.”Yeah.Where are you from originally?“Venezuela. Do you mind if I watch the replay?”So we scooted over to the TV outside the jocks’

room and watched Ramon Dominguez’s dream come true. This time, there was no lugging, just the perfect trip.

We missed the first half but caught the good half, when Phi Beta Doc turned for home with a trucklike hole to go through.

“I’m passing horses, but I still want to take hold of my horse here. I wait and see what John Velazquez is going to do, he’s on my outside, and what Pat Day is going to to do. Stay on the inside and there was a

shot for me to go in between the horses. It opened up beautifully. You have to know that’s going to happen. Sometimes it doesn’t but . . .”

He smiled, sweat still streaming from under his helmet, and watched himself win his first Saratoga stakes. Now back to the interview.

How long have you been in the United States?“Three years. I rode one year (in Venezuela) with

my bug.”DId you ever hear about Saratoga in Venezuela?“Not really, didn’t hear of any track in this country.

But as soon as I got to the United States, I was in Miami, I already knew what Saratoga was. It’s very exciting to win here. Like a dream, you know.”

What would they be saying in Venezuela right now?“Oh wow. It’s crazy because you cannot break in

there. My odds were pretty high there in the beginning. I wasn’t supposed to be such a nice rider there. Not too many people had confidence in me or the promo-tion that I came out of. A lot of other riders were doing a lot better than me. With time I got more experience and getting on better horses, things are working out for me. I’m sure they would be surprised and happy for me.”

Do you have family down there?“Yeah, all my family is there.”When will you call them?“Tonight.” With the greatest smile you could ever

see. Nothing like making family proud. What are you going to tell them?“Oh, they’ll know. They have a computer, with the

Internet.”Hi, Dominguez family, your boy just made a dream

come true. You should be so proud.
