Apple Routethe

President’s Message:The Apple Route celebrates a special region of Ontario. Only an hour east of Toronto by car, the Apple Route offers a vibrant range of activities. This southern area of Northumberland County, pressed between the Great Pine Ridge and Lake Ontario has, for 200 years, enjoyed a rich agricultural history that brought both prosperity and continuity.

Nestled in the rolling hills of Eastern Ontario’s “Apple Country”, the Apple Route meanders through pleasant orchards and friendly towns & villages between Port Hope and Trenton.

The core of the Apple Route follows signs along Heritage Highway 2 and “spurs” take the traveler to scenic Presqu’ile Park near Brighton, historical Lakeport, past Fort Kente at Carrying Place and connects with the Loyalist Parkway. Numerous craft stores and roadside markets carry apple-theme items.

The scenic countryside, pleasant orchards and friendly communities along the Apple Route are a haven for visitors with an appetite for the simple pleasures of a slower pace of life governed by the land, the water and the seasons. From several harbours you can sample trophy fishing on Lake Ontario. Museums and galleries flourish in all the communities along the route and more than sixty antique stores cater to tastes from the primitive to the formal. Beaches, public parks, wildlife sanctuaries and public footpaths all provide access to some of the prettiest landscapes in southern Ontario. Presqu’ile Provincial Park is an enormous resource for campers and birders. All along the Route you’ll be delighted by the range and sophistication of dining and accommodation facilities. Spas, bed and breakfasts, country inns, hotels and motels abound; each provides helpful advice and suggestions for making the most of your visit.

For more information on the Apple Route, and to get your free copy of The Apple Route map visit our website at www.appleroute.com or e-mail [email protected] or call the Brighton and District Chamber of Commerce at 613-475-2775.

The Apple Route will be getting ready for another great year. Membership in the Apple Route includes a listing in our very popular Apple Route map as well as on our website www.appleroute.com. Any businesses interested in becoming a member of the Apple Route should contact Lee Ostapuk at the Brighton and District Chamber of Commerce at 613-475-2775 or at [email protected].

Historic Port Hope is one of Ontario’s oldest and prettiest communities. Settled by Empire Loyalists in the late 1700’s, Port Hope, somewhat like being enclosed in a time capsule, still retains its old world charm. The Municipality of Port Hope encompasses the quaint rural villages of Port Britain, Wesleyville, Welcome, Canton, Osaca, Perrytown, Campbellcroft, Garden Hill and Elizabethville. Why not take a drive into the country and discover their charms?

Page 7: The Apple Route 2011 Tour Guide

Downtown Port Hope is a heritage conservation district and the main street boasts the best preserved streetscape in Ontario. There are over 280 designated heritage homes and buildings, more per capita than anywhere in Canada. Complementing the architecture are numerous antique, boutique, specialty and one of a kind shops. Self guided walking tour booklets are available at the Visitors Information Centre.

The Capitol Theatre offers year round entertainment in music, dance, comedy, opera, and a professional summer season of plays. One of the last atmospheric theatres still in operation in Canada, the theatre was built in 1930 and is fully restored and barrier-free.

Things of interest include year round festivals and events, trails, waterfront, and the Ganaraska River and Forest Centre.

Come for the day and stay the night. Port Hope has inns, B&B’s and The Hillcrest, a world class spa. Choose to eat at one of our many eateries, pubs, bistros, cafes and fine dining establishments.

Drop by the Visitors’ Information Centre located in the Cameco Capitol Arts Centre, 20 Queen Street in downtown Port Hope.

In 1784, a treaty with the Mississauga Indians ceded a large

tract of land along the north shore of Lake Ontario to the British

Crown. A number of villages sprang up along the shoreline, one

of which was to become the village of Grafton. Originally called

Haldimand Corners, the village was located at the junction of

Danforth Road, (1800), the road leading southward towards

Grafton Harbour, and the surveyed baseline road from Trenton

(1790). Grafton probably has more buildings of historic and

architectural significance per capita than any town in Ontario.

Apples are odour-sensitive and will absorb odours from potatoes,

bulb onions and other strong-flavoured items, so be sure to keep

them separate.

Apple blossoms are usually pink when they open and gradually fade to white.

BraeburnOrange to red in colour with a slight yellow tinge. Excellent for snacking and great for salads, pies, and baking. They also freeze well.

CortlandRed on top of a greenish yellow background. Sweet with a hint of tartness, this apple is good for snacking, pies, salads, sauces, and baking. Freezes well.

Empire ApplesGreen and red colored. Has a particularly sweet/tart taste. Mostly used in salads and excellent for pies as well as a snacking item. Good for freezing.

Fuji ApplesReddish pink in color. Was introduced into America from Japan. Good for snacking and for additing to salads. Good also for pies and sauces. Not good for freezing.

Gala ApplesYellow background covered with pinkish stripes. Is a cross between Golden Delicious and Kidd’s orange red (a variety from New Zealand). Sweet tasting. Excellent for pies and snacking but not for freezing.

Golden DeliciousYellow in colour. Sweet tasting. Not related to the Red Delicious variety of apples even though the names suggest it. Compared to Red Delicious, this apple is sweeter, has a juicy texture, is rounder and the skin is thinner. Baking this apple brings out its unique flavour.

Granny SmithGreen in colour. Mild flavoured with a nice balance of sweetness and tartness. Can be stored for as long as half a year. Great for baking, sauces and snacking.

Red DeliciousDeep red in color. Taller and thinner in contrast to other round varieties. This apple is the most popular for snacking with its sweet, tart taste. The strong flavour is found in the thick and somewhat bitter skin. Although a great snacking apple, it is not the best apple for baking.

McIntoshRed in colour, Sweet, juicy and tart tasting. “Macs” were developed in 1811 by an Ontario farmer by the name of John McIntosh. They are one of the most popular and top selling varieties of apples in North America. Varieties such as Empire, Cortland and Spartan are produced by crossing McIntoshes with other varieties. Great for snacking, pies, sauce and salads.

SpartanDark red over a greenish yellow. An all-purpose medium sized apple that is a cross between the McIntosh and the Newtown apple. Has a crisp texture with a uniquely sweet flavour. A great snacking apple. Excellent for sauce.

RoseneathRoseneath was founded over 170 years ago by settlers who named it after a Scottish village on the shores of Loch Gare. It is presently a community of about 658 people.Roseneath’s two main claims to fame are it’s fairground and the fully restored 1906 C.W. Parker Carousel.

CastletonCastleton was first settled by the McKagues from County Cavan, Ireland.

WarkworthBoth a farming community and a centre for the arts. Relaxing and safe, it is that unique blend of a friendly country village and uptown style that welcomes you.

BaltimoreFirst settled by Irish immigrant John McCarty around 1805, it was named after his family’s ancestral home in Baltimore, County Cork, Ireland. It is best known today for the presence of historic Ball’s Mill, built in 1842.

BewdleyNamed after Bewdley, England and known for its monument to Joseph M. Scriven, who preached upon the village streets around the 1860s. Today, an enjoyable vacation spot on Rice Lake for tourist and fishing.

Brightonand area

Brighton is one of the fastest growing towns

in Ontario, with attractive housing developments

both on and near the water. With its charming 19th

century architecture, the town retains the spirit of

the early founders who established some of the

finest apple orchards in Canada. In summer, the

town is at its busiest with tourists, campers and

cottagers.

People visit the area to fish Presqu’ile Bay for

trophy walleye and pike or alternatively, head out

into Lake Ontario for championship salmon and

trout fishing. Boaters can enjoy shallow and deep

water boating.

Visit Proctor House Museum, said to be haunted

by the Nix ghost, and see the ‘widows walk’ with

views of the Bay, or visit Memory Junction with its

railway memorabilia.

Stroll along the streets and be

delighted by the many architectural

gems. Savour the delights at some

of the area’s best eating spots.

Stop off at Gosport and pick up

some freshly caught fish at the

fisheries. Come to the Saturday

farmers’ market and enjoy the

fresh produce, listen to music,

stroll through arts & crafts displays

or visit the many antique and craft

stores that are sure to delight you

with their unusual items.

Visit the Applefest in September, when Brighton really pulls out all the

stops to celebrate the harvesting of the apples in grand style!

In Brighton you’ll find one of nature’s outstanding gifts... Presqu’ile

Provincial Park. In summer there are swimming, camping, windsurfing,

diving, nature programs... a host of activities for the day tripper or

camper, including a Heritage Centre at the oldest operating lighthouse

on the north shore of Lake Ontario. Each spring tens of thousands of

ducks rest here on their journey further north. As well, more than 300

bird species make Presqu’ile a “hot spot” for birders. In the winter there

are cross-country skiing trails for the enthusiast.

Elsewhere along the Lake Ontario shore, Brighton offers superb camping

and other family attractions, Speedway Park, mini-golf & go-karts,

botanical gardens and numerous garden centers to name a few.

Something For Everyone! 37

The Grand Trunk Railway (GTR) was the first railway running between Toronto and Montreal, opening November 4, 1856. Thirty-two stations were built on this line. Only nine are left. The 1857 Brighton Station was the only one on the line built using local brick. From the station today you can get the best view of the busy Main Line action of more than eighty-five trains passing daily on the CNR and CPR. The Grand Trunk Railway was purchased by the Canadian National Railway in 1923. The Station closed in the 1960’s when passenger traffic started to decline.

Today on this three acre site, four original buildings still stand: the station,

baggage shed, hops barn (shipping out hundreds of tons of hops each year), and the Morrow Building, a Ford unloading depot and central distribution centre for many car dealers.

Today the Station is home to many r a i l w a y a n d a r e a artifacts, memorabilia, and historical pieces. The surviving buildings and many rolling stocks are filled with hundreds of special displays and are open for viewing and

touring, including one 1913 wooden box car that is specifically connected to the Apple industry, growing, harvesting, processing and shipping, from which the Apple Route derives its claim to fame.

Quinte Westand area

The City of Quinte West is located in a region of

spectacular beauty, with cultural, sporting and natural attractions

that beckon to be discovered and experienced in all seasons. The City

hosts and supports a series of diverse events that will make visitors

feel at home throughout the year. Driving south of Trenton you are

following the route of generations of Native explorers, settlers and

soldiers. Here you will find an ancient portage route between Lake

Ontario and the Bay of Quinte. This was the shortest path between the

two bodies of water and it was called “The Carrying Place” by early

settlers. Along this small part of Country Road 64, Old Portage Road

has been given the distinction of being the Oldest Road in Ontario.

Being the Southern Gateway to the Trent-Severn Waterway, Quinte
