October 2016

For the Annual Report, I have the job of reflecting on the past year, and as someone who arrived at SI in late June from my previous job as president of Brophy College Prep in Phoenix, I am faced with the challenge of only hearing about the year from others. However, I was on hand for two great events — the Broadway Auction in March, which proved to be a wonderful introduction to the current SI family, and the June 28 Day of Giving, which helped me see what a generous community of donors this school has.

When I walked into the auction back in March, I was greeted by people in costumes from Broadway shows and saw a documentary that illustrated the vast talent our West Coast school has given to the East Coast. Adam Jacobs ’97 is still starring in the title role in Aladdin; Darren Criss ’05 had his face posted larger than life in Times Square when he performed in How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying; and Bartlett Sher ’77 is still going strong

as a Tony Award winning director and head of the Lincoln Center Theatre. Sadly, cancer recently ended the life of James Houghton ’76, who headed Juilliard’s Drama Division and who served as founding artistic director of the Signature Theatre Company. Read James’ obituary in this issue to see the mark he left on Broadway.

These alumni are storytellers at heart, and that is how I see my role as president — to tell you the stories of the men, women and young people who are the SI family.

When I entered my new office on June 28, I saw hard at work some of my new family — the Advancement team — who were busy orchestrating the school’s first-ever Day of Giving, one where we hoped to mobilize 500 gifts in 24 hours, with 100 coming from first-time donors. By day’s end, SI received gifts from 827 donors, of whom 220 had never donated to the school.

The $140,000 we made that day helped us in two important ways. First, it showed us that what we’re doing with our students is working. We teach them to be generous and to be people for and with others. Nearly a third of the seniors took part in our Giving Day because they understand that others are following in their footsteps.

Secondly, the gifts helped us in our yearly goal of trying to raise money to help 320-plus students with tuition assistance. For the past several years, the interest on our endowment just hasn’t covered the $3.5 million we distribute. That’s why last year we launched the Compass Campaign, one that we hope will bring our endowment up to $100 million, giving us a sustainable path to help even more families.

I also heard other stories in my travels between Phoenix and San Francisco, including how fond you all are of my predecessor, Ed Harris, S.J. ’63. In his two years as president, he did much to help SI finish important seismic retrofits, raise scholarship funds and plan for the future, one that will involve new facilities and new programs as we prepare our school for the challenges of the new millennium. I’ve known Ed for years and had the pleasure of working with him in Sacramento when he served as president at Jesuit High there. I’m delighted to continue working with him, as he will stay on as the Superior of the SI Jesuit community.

Finally, I’m hoping to get to know more of you over this coming year. Even though I’ve never served at SI before, it already feels like home but with a unique flavor all its own, one that comes, perhaps, from being in one of the best cities in the world.

Thank you for all you have done for SI and all you plan to do to help us in our important task of teaching boys and girls to be men and women who have the courage to lead and a passion to serve.

Yours in Christ,

Edward A. Reese, S.J.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC THEN & NOW: SI’s first school band and choral group formed on Feb. 12, 1874, “to cultivate music for innocent social enjoyment and to add solemnity to civil and religious festivals” according to The First Half Century, a history of SI written by Joseph Riordan, S.J. Music has followed SI’s students through the ages, from the 1920s orchestra (opposite page below) to the May Spring Pops (opposite page top left) and the Instrumental Concert (opposite page top right). My thanks to so many of you who responded generously to the kick-off of our Compass Campaign to add $50 million to SI’s Scholarship Endowment Fund. As we manage the tension between the rising cost of living in the Bay Area and providing access to an SI experience, building the Scholarship Endowment Fund is the single best and most sustainable way of supporting the Ignatian mission to provide moral, academic and personal direction to our students and community.

The Class of 2016 boasted 90 young Ignatians who walked the graduation aisle at St. Ignatius Church last June who would not have had the opportunity for a coed, Catholic, Jesuit education if not for you. Thank you! Your gift not only transforms the lives of current SI students but will impact generations to follow.

Last year you, our partners, donated $3.5 million to the Compass Campaign’s Scholarship Endowment Fund, bringing our total to date to $15.1 million. Our

WHAT PROVIDES YOU WITH DIRECTION?BY JOE VOLLERT ’84, VICE PRESIDENT FOR ADVANCEMENT

goal is to provide $5 million a year in financial assistance from our Scholarship Endowment Fund by 2020; indeed, our freshman class for the 2016-17 school year requires a record $1.2 million in financial assistance, putting us right on that track.

Finally, I have to share a personal note. One of the great blessings in my life is the chance to meet so many of our alumni and families. When we began outreach to our alumni in the New York City area some seven years ago, I had the privilege of meeting Jim Houghton ’76. Jim gave Principal Patrick Ruff and me a tour of the Signature Theater and recounted his journey of building the first new theater in New York in 40 years and creating a venue for American playwrights to showcase their body of work over an entire year. It’s an extraordinary space just as Jim was an extraordinary man.

Jim succumbed to stomach cancer this summer, and with his passing the SI community lost a true Ignatian. Jim was a man who embodied the ideal of being a man for others while exploring the frontiers of the American theater scene. If you have not read any of the tributes to him, I encourage you to check siprep.org and search for his name. I promise you will be as moved by the testimonials to his life as I was by his extraordinary presence.

When our students chant the familiar refrain “We are SI,” they indeed capture not only you, our extraordinary graduates and parents, but also the class of 2020, young men and women who are just beginning to write SI’s next chapter.

in memoriam

James Houghton ’76, founder of Signature Theatre Company and head of Juilliard’s Drama Division, dies at 57

The day after James Houghton ’76 died on Aug. 2, Charles Isherwood of the New York Times wrote the following: “It could be argued that James Houghton, who died this week after a battle with cancer, did more for the American theater during the past quarter-century than anyone else — playwright, director or producer, man or woman, anyone the average theatergoer knows by name.” Isherwood sang Mr. Houghton’s praise for having the courage and vision to launch Signature Theater Company in 1991, which devoted each season to showcasing the works of one playwright. Over the years, that would include authors from Arthur Miller and Edward Albee to lesser known playwrights, such as Adrienne Kennedy and Maria Irene Fornés. The effect of Mr. Houghton’s efforts spread throughout Broadway over the years so much so that early in the planning for the One World Trade Center tower, built on Ground Zero, Mayor Michael Bloomberg offered to give the ground floor to Mr. Houghton’s company for his new theatre space. When barriers arose, Bloomberg helped him open on West 42nd Street in 2012 the Pershing Signature Center, designed by Frank Gehry, the first new theatre on Broadway in decades. Thanks to Mr. Houghton’s efforts, Signature Theatre won a Tony for best regional theatre in 2014, the first year that competition included New York City companies. Mr. Houghton’s talent also earned for him a spot as the Richard Rogers Director of Drama at Julliard as well as the admiration and love of his many students. His admirers also included fellow SI theatre alumni, including Lincoln Center Artistic Director Bartlett Sher ’77, who noted that “whenever we met, we had that sort of secrete handshake that came with growing up in the Sunset District of the City and being marked by the Jesuits. James embodied the selfless devotion they taught us, but he channeled it into the theatre. His apostolic mission was to serve this glorious work we do. He did it in so many profound, kind and thoughtful ways. He changed lives. He served so many people. It’s not enough to say he will be missed. It’s a loss of staggering proportions to so many. But he left behind so many good things and made so many things so much better that all the love he gave is still with us. It’s all of us who are so much better and bigger for having known Jim.” His close friend Loren Toolajian ’76 added that Houghton “lived for theatre every day for 25 years. He made it his mission, and we are all changed by it. There will never be another like him in my life.” A memorial service was held Aug. 27 at Orradre Chapel. Jim is survived by his wife, Joyce O’Connor, and their children Lily and Henry; his siblings Scott ’71, Susan Devine, Lynne, and Trish Line; and his parents Sherrill and Joan (Heaney); and many relatives. Donations may be made to SI’s drama program, afterworktheater.org and danielsmusic.org.
