A message from your Centre Manager 1.
Wishing you all a very Happy Canada Day!
June was a very busy month. The 8th Best-Ball Golf Tournament was held on June
17. We made close to $3000. Thank you to the committee members and the many
sponsors and businesses that help make this tournament a success.
The new flooring is complete, and the Centre is looking fresh and renewed. Thank
you to New Horizon’s for Senior Program and Morden Area Foundation for the
grants. I would also like to extend a thank you to the many members who donated
towards the project.
The Annual General Meeting was held on June 20th and the New Board of Directors
were elected. I would like to thank the outgoing Directors, Alice Shultz, Pat Bonner
and Cheryl Link for their commitment and services towards the Centre. At the same
time, I would like to welcome the new Board of Directors- Evelyn Currie, Cathie
Vanstone, Bill Potter, Rosanne Reichert, Gloria Penner, Janis Ehnes, Cheryl
Fedorchuk and John Epp. We still have two vacancies for the Board of Directors.
What’s coming up next? We have some trips planned for you. There is still room on
the bus for Folklorama Tours being held on Monday, August 12, 2019. The cost is
$90 for members and $100 for non-members that includes 3 pavilions: Russia,
Brazil and Japan.
Corn & Apple will be held August 23-25. The Centre is known for the three-day
lunch provided during the festival. WE NEED volunteers to help with the lunch. If
you signed up for helping during Corn & Apple when you renewed your member-
ship, you might get a call from any of the committee members in the coming weeks.
Alternatively, you can call the Centre and let us know when you can help. This year,
we will be requesting you to donate pie for desserts. Any donations towards the cost
of the food are also welcome!
As you all know the Centre is celebrating 25 Years in the facility this year. To start
with the celebrations, we are doing a Raffle Draw and giving away some BIG
prizes. The tickets are $20 for a book of 10 tickets. The sales of the booklet start
July 2. So come and buy your booklet and help us sell some too. The Early Bird
draw will be held on September 20th. These are the list of prizes:
Early Bird Prize: Apple iPad Wi-Fi – 128 GB
Prize #1: SAMSUNG 65” 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV

10th
Anniversary and Mortgage Burning
Basil Agnew remembers well the events held during 2004 as the Friendship Centre celebrated its 10th Anniversary at 306 North Railway St. In a letter to members Basil noted “The original board has taken the responsibility of promoting this event throughout the year by holding activities every month beginning in March. “There will be Games, a Variety Show, a Volunteer Picnic and Concert in the Park Bowl as well as our Annual Banquet and “Burning of the Mortgage.” “To show our appreciation to the over 12,000 volunteer hours donated to the Morden Friendship Centre and Services For Seniors in the past year, we are holding the Volunteer Appreciation day on Thursday, July 15, 2004 in Morden Park. “Traditionally we set aside one day a year to honour our volunteers, without whom the Centre could not operate. An added feature to our 10th Anniversary Volunteer Appreciation Day is we are inviting our Ma-jor Donors and their partners. We have not forgotten how your generous donation ten years ago played such a major roll in getting this facility up and running.” The corporate sponsors listed included CIBC, Décor Cabinets, Krahn & Friesen, Royal Bank, Morden Credit Union, and Morden Lions Club. The Major Donors were the Town of Morden, Ladies Auxiliary, Thomas Sill Foundation, Ruth Winkler, Albert Schroeder, Marjorie Godkin, Jim Menzies and the Morden Thrift Shop. Basil recalled that at the fall fundraiser in October 1992, people we asked to invest in a dream. “After making the presentation that night, I said to myself the next day, how did I ever get talked into doing such a ridiculous thing? I had doubts – will it ever work? One lady donated $10,000.00 and other dona-tions dribbled in and by July 1, 1993 we had $25,000.00. It didn’t sound like much but when our offer to purchase the old Tomboy Store for $160,000.00 was accepted in August, they wanted 10% down within 10 days. We were able to write a cheque for $16,000.00. “Jim Menzies accepted the nomination as chairperson for the fundraising committee. In September 1993, we held a public meeting in our new building to show people our proposed layout. Jim showed up with 16 people who bought Honorary Life Memberships for $1,000.00 each. Some were seniors but many were aggressive young business people who wanted to see our town prosper. Those people were: Ernie & Alice Krahn, Dick & Emily Goerz, Kel & Kelly Wiebe, Russell & Edna Burkitt, John & Jill Doney, Ruth Winkler, Ruth Weber, Jim & Hazel Menzies, Fred & Aileen Westwood, Garry & Janet Bartleman, Bert & Erna Appelt, Bill & Esther Zacharias, John A. Reichert, Max & Esther Friesen, Alma Nelson and Wilf & Grace Warkentin.” A lot of sweat equity as well as dollars went into the Centre during the first ten years, but with a total cost of almost $800,000.00 the bank loan was paid off and the Centre was debt free. A mortgage burning party was held Friday, October 8 and all donors and members were invited to share in the event as a way of saying thank you for getting the Centre started.
