DEAR FELLOW REDEEMED:

A very fine lady, whom I know, was terribly disappointed a few days ago. She’s a student at a major university and during the summer she has been working at a very nice family restaurant located in the Twin Cities.

It was a really good deal: Hours that she liked; earnings adequate to help insure another year of school; and a rather pleasant working environment. Almost made it through the summer, too. Then the bottom fell out all at once.

The manager suddenly seemed to realize that among his employees there was a significant number who were college students and that come September, they would all be leaving. Thus, painfully sensing the inevitable, he decided to hasten it by a few weeks. So, he “laid-off ” all the students within a day or two and replaced them with non-students.

The young lady to whom I am referring was terribly disappointed. So were her parents. Four good working weeks---enough to put the icing on the cake---were seemingly going down the tubes. No time to look for a new job! “What am I going to do? If only he had let me work for even one more week it would have helped,” she said through misty eyes.

It does all sound a bit unfair---particularly since she did in fact remember to tithe all during the summer and it would be quite understandable if at this point she had questioned the wisdom of it all. Instead, however, she turned her problem into an opportunity. She talked to her manager and offered to work relief for anyone at any time and because of her excellent work record, she was put right back on with a floating schedule. The end result of it all is that she is now working more hours than before and has opportunity to work right up until the day before she leaves for school in the middle of September.

For whatever else might be said about the whole situation, we can certainly be assured that she has caught an additional measure of the “Joy and Glory” of honoring God as it applies to taking Him at His Word when He says: “Bring the full tithes into the storehouse…and thereby put me to the test…if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.” (Malachi 3:10)

As we enter into September and begin a new season of ministry, may we be led to take our God at His Word and faithfully return to Him the first-fruits of our time, talents & treasures. And may His Church prosper through our faithfulness.

Confidently believing,

Rev. Dan L. Siedenburg

Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray ... and the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person

Growing in God’s Word:Theological Education in Asia

It’s January 2016. The temperatures in Fort Wayne have plummeted, making it unimaginably cold for ourAsian guests attending the seminary’s

annual conference. Dan is on a mission: find long johns! In his role as one of the hosts, Dan’s packages of thermal underwear were warmly received––mission accomplished!

This was one the earlier, more unusual tasks for Dan as theological education facilitator for Asia. Nowadays, when it comes to conferences with an Asian connection, Dan’s responsibilities have expanded beyond that of host or presenter after this summer’s organizational restructuring. Some of those new responsibilities include that of facilitating nine theological conferences or activities slated for this fiscal year starting this July as he works closely with our regional director.

Conferences vary greatly, with regard to purpose, attendees, location, budgets, and whether it is in collaboration with other recognized service organizations of the LCMS or partner church bodies. Many moving pieces are involved. One area in which they won’t vary, however, is in their distinctly Lutheran character.SNEAK PEAK: CHIAYI, TAIWANThis September Dan and all Asia area missionaries (who are free to attend) will meet for a three-day work conference at Asia’s new headquarters. Besides presenting to the whole group, Dan will be conferring with his fellow theological educators, and in his role as team manager will be building closer relationships with the other educators as they all strive together with one common mission.

INDIA IN OCTOBER?For October, our LCMS theological educator in Sri Lanka, Dr. Edward Naumann is in discussion with our sister church partner in India for a possible joint conference. Dan will assist Dr. Naumann in this task as needed. A trip to India will give Dan the opportunity to visit with our church partner faculty and administration. Dan notes an additional bonus: “This gives me an opportunity to spend a significant amount of time with one of our theological educators, getting to know him, his family and working situation so that when budgetary items arise, I have a better understanding of the problems he faces, how he sees them, and the nature of the church body with which he works.”

Dan will be working hard with Asia partner seminaries, their church bodies, and LCMS theological educators in these countries to provide pastors for congregations all with the help of your wonderful support we receive State-side to the glory of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Safety Alert Safety AlertThe Open Arms ECC Board is constantly concerned about the safety of your children especially during drop-off and pick-up. Parking on both the south and north side of the driveway has created several unsafe conditions. As such, we want to remind you of traffic and parking restrictions as you drop off and pick up your children. Effective September 1st the following traffic and parking restrictions will be enforced:

Traffic flow will once again be one-way in the driveway (West to East). Please do not turn around in the driveway.

There will be no parking on the North side of the driveway. This is designated as a fire lane and is a licensing requirement.

Parking is available in the south half of the lot for parents during drop-off and pick-up.

The Board of Church Properties will install additional signage to help with the flow of traffic.

These parking and traffic restrictions can be seen in the attached photo.

We recognize this is a change and may result in some inconvenience for a few parents. It is for the safety of all children that we ask for your cooperation with this change. Thank you for helping us keep your children safe.

Please note this decision was made by the ECC Board and Holy Emmanuel Church in collaboration with Open Arms leadership. If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to the ECC Board. The Board can be reached by emailing [email protected].

It’s September, and everything is in full swing again: back to school and back to church attendance after vacations and weekends away. And since everything is back into full swing, it’s a perfect time to get back to basics, back to the foundation.

At the end of the first of his chapters on the virtue of faith in Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis provides a helpful reminder, by way of analogy, for the foundation of stewardship. He wrote:

Every faculty you have, your power of thinking or of moving your limbs from moment to moment, is given you by God. If you devoted every moment of your whole life exclusively to His service you could not give Him anything that was not in a sense His own already. So then, when we talk of a man doing anything for God or giving anything to God, I will tell you what it is really like. It is like a small child going to its father and saying, “Daddy, give me six pence to buy you a birthday present.” Of course, the father does, and he is pleased with the child’s present. It is all very nice and proper, but only an idiot would think that the father is six-pence to the good on the transaction. When a man has made these two discoveries God can really get to work. It is after this that real life begins. (128–129).

This is the first thing we are given to confess about stewardship, and it has to do with ownership. God owns everything, and we are simply managers — stewards — acting on His behalf. This is true not only of all that we have in this life (Deuteronomy 8:17–18), but also all that we are in this life (1 Corinthians 6:20).

The rest flows from here. Since we are stewards, or managers, of what belongs to God, entrusted to make use of it according to His will, there is an expectation of responsibility and accountability.

For the Lord said, “Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more” (Luke 12:48b).

And from this comes blessing and reward: “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master” (Matthew 25:21).

We have everything we need to support this body and life from our God’s fatherly divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in us. We have everything we need for our spiritual life also from His merciful hands.

On account of the sacrifice of His Son, our Lord Jesus, through the preaching of the gospel and the administration of the sacraments, we have the forgiveness of sins, eternal life, and everlasting salvation delivered to us with absolute certainty that it is ours — not as stewards but as sons (Galatians 4:1–7).

Let us then, as His own sons, press all that He gives to us into the service of His church and to His glory.

Saturday September 15th Hosted by the Sedio’s! Address: 5715 27th Ave S Minneapolis Come at 6 pm for a casual evening of food and fellowship! Please bring a dessert or side dish to share!
