1 Hope everybody has their Christmas shopping done because I sure don’t. Of course I’m the habitual Christmas Eve shopper anyway. I just never seem to find the time. I’ve decorated the outside of the house under the watchful eye of my wife. The missing or burned out light bulbs have been replaced and the decorations have been moved around to a more eye pleasing location. I’m still decorating the inside of the house. From my family to yours, we hope you have a happy and safe Holiday Season!! UCLA Extension has started the Advanced Plumbing Systems Design certificate program which is sponsored by ASPE. The online design courses start January 5, 2015. This fall the following courses will be offered: Plumbing Systems I - Code and Engineering Fundamentals, Plumbing Systems II - Advanced Engineering Systems, Fire Protection for Plumbing Engineering, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and Electrical Design and Construction. Courses may be taken individually or as part of the Advanced Plumbing Systems Design certificate program. For more information, go to the ASPE website www.aspe.org. We all have so much to be thankful for. Some of you are hunters and recently bagged your tro-phy deer; congratulations. Most of us spent quality time with our families and friends over this past Thanksgiving Day break. Some used a design tip they recently learned by attending their local ASPE Chapter meeting that got them through the final stage of a plumbing design project.

I think it’s safe to say we’re all thankful for the last 4 years of dedicated service Jim Kendzel gave to ASPE. I was fortunate enough to speak with Jim at the recent PMI (Plumbing Manufac-turers International) Fall Conference in Chicago, IL. We wish him the best in his new role as Vice President of Certification at the American Health Information Management Association. www.ahima.org.

The PMI Conference was well attended by many industry notables involved in the manu-facturing of plumbing fixtures and/or their com-ponents. As well as media and certification bod-ies. The conference started with an Executive Panel Discussion featuring key representatives from Bradley, Delta Faucet, Kohler, Moen, Sym-mons, T&S Brass and TOTO. Bill Kurtis, ac-claimed documentary host, producer and broad-caster moderated the event.

We also heard from PMI Consultants who closely monitor what legislative action is taking place in Washington D.C. and California. We know this will eventually affect each and every one of us. Be sure to read the many articles that are sure to populate your upcoming monthly plumbing magazines.

Not only was I thankful to have attended PMI but I was also equally fortunate to attend the PPI (Plastics Pipe Institute) Semi-Annual Meet-ing in Southlake, TX. It was here I learned about the many opportunities there are for plas-tic piping systems.

PPI has numerous divisions. One division is the Building & Construction Division. They just completed the PEX Design Guide 2nd Edition. It’s available for download www.plasticpipe.org/publications/pex_handbook.html. Be sure to add this to your document library. It contains everything you’ve ever wanted to know about PEX, including things you’ve never thought of.

There is also the Conduit; Corrugated; Energy Piping Systems; Municipal & Industrial Divi-sions as well as the Technical Committee. PPI has produced a wealth of knowledge for you and it’s at your fingertips.

Do yourself a favor and bookmark the www.safeplumbing.org and www.plasticpipe.org websites and visit them often. They’re both a valuable resource for the plumbing industry.

We can all be thankful for the addition of a new Chapter in Region 2, the Toronto ASPE Chap-ter. I hope to give a full report on this in my arti-cle next month.

Let me leave you here with one last thing I’m thankful for; our upcoming Hanukkah, Christ-mas and New Year’s Holidays. No matter how you celebrate, be sure to reflect on your own personal accomplishments this past year before reaching out and sharing your good fortune with everyone around you. I’m starting out by shar-ing mine with you.
