American Revolution

• This unit on the American Revolutionary War is designed for middle school students, grades 6-8.

• It will last approximately 8-10 days.

• The students will be exposed to many aspects of the war including, events leading up to the conflict, key figures from both sides, major battles, and the resolution.

American Revolution: Objectives

• Given proper instruction, the students will be able to analyze and synthesize the main events leading up to the American Revolution.


• Given proper instruction, the students will be able to identify and explain the role of key figures in the conflict from both sides.


• Given proper instruction, the students will be able to identify, locate, and describe major battles during the war.


• Given proper instruction, the students will be able to analyze and synthesize the events that led to a resolution between Britain and the American Colonies. The students will also have to analyze and explain the consequences of the war from both sides.

American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 1)• The teacher will begin

by introducing the upcoming unit on the American Revolution by asking open-ended questions about what students are already familiar with or what they are interested in.

• The first assignment is to begin reading, My Brother Sam is Dead

American Revolution: Student Activities (Day 2)

• The students will continue reading My Brother Sam is Dead

• The teacher will begin to introduce some of the events that led up to the Declaration of Independence and the start of the war.



• The teacher will continue with the events that led to the war and begin to introduce key figures from both sides of the conflict.

• The students will also begin to research a key figure or event from the war for their final project



• The teacher will continue with key figures and events before the war

• The students will have lab time to research the five web sites listed previously



• The teacher will begin to introduce the main events during the Revolution

• The students will have lab time to continue their online research

• The students will also have time to begin to watch segments of the videocassettes that are available



• The teacher will continue with the discussion of events and battles during the war

• The students will have time to work on their research project



• The teacher will continue with the discussion of the war

• The students will randomly select which day they present their project for next week

• Class discussion on the reading



• The teacher will continue with the discussion of the war

• The students will wrap up work on their projects



• Project Presentations will begin today

• Students will receive handouts and information on the Revolution Simulation to be played at the end of the week

• Students will have class discussion on their readings (25% of final unit exam grade)

• Students will be given time to meet with their respective sides to plan strategy for the war simulation


• Students will take the final unit exam on the American Revolution
