DEAN’ S LETTER Now that Spring is in full blossom and we are seeing the days lengthen with extended daylight; we celebrate the end of the Easter season as we prepare for the season of Pentecost. While Pentecost is the longest season in the liturgical year and generally runs through the summer months, it can be a wonderful time to refresh, renew and catch up on work that was previously unaccomplished. For me, I am planning to begin a long-awaited project of continuing the efforts of my predecessor Christine Kates, that being, cataloging and updating the choral library at St. Paul’s Church. The vast collection of music is immense in terms of number of works. An outdated card-catalogue system sits idle. My first initiative will be to toss out “dated” music. The library includes music dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that no longer serves to communicate effectively the Gospel message. Generally, these scores were written by lesser known composers and tend to have texts that don’t reflect current liturgical trends. Timeless music by the great masters of Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras tend to always sound fresh and exciting hundreds of years after they have been written. “Quality ensures longevity” will be the motto I will follow to “weed” through hundreds of boxes, shelves and file cabinets full of music. This will be a labor of sight-reading and a labor of organizational coordination. The ultimate goal is to use the software program I-retrieval 5 for St. Paul’s choral library. I have lots of homework to start learning this database system. This project may take me many seasons to accomplish…….. Plan to attend our May 21 meeting to hear some of York and Hanover’s talent. Layton Graves will compete for the Senior Hunt scholarship.

The selection has just been updated and there is currently a great selection.

Interesting Organ Tour Justin Nimmo sent us this link to a very interesting YouTube video of Martin Ellis playing and giving a tour of the WurliTzer in the Hilbert Circle Theatre in Indianapolis. You may remember that Justin played for SVTOS in June 2012, and he works for Carlton Smith who restored and installed the instruments. This is one of the organs that will be featured during the 2014 ATOS Convention in Indianapolis. Ashu, concert saxophonist May 19, 2013 at 4PM * Free Admission Trinity Lutheran Church * 2000 Chestnut St., Camp Hill PA 17011 * 717-737-8635 * http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUEHxwsh16s&feature=player_detailpage#t=53s Concert saxophonist Ashu, age 26, has continually defied conventions winning major international and national competitions traditionally won by pianists and violinists. He has performed throughout the world as recitalist and concerto soloist and has begun to bring the concert saxophone to a broader audience. Ashu made his recital debut at Carnegie Hall's Weill Hall in New York and, at age 16, made his concerto debut at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. Since then, performances have taken him throughout the USA and Europe, including such locations as Norway, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France, Portugal, and the West Indies. With a dynamic style that captivates audiences, and with a repertoire ranging from original soprano and alto saxophone works by Debussy, Ibert, and Villa-Lobos to his own arrangements of Morricone, Rachmaninoff, and Piazzolla, Ashu has shown that the concert saxophone can reach beyond stylistic categorization and to a large diversity of people. His playing has been described as “Riveting...Brilliant...Pizzazz to burn!” (Miles Hoffman, National Public Radio Performance Today commentator) and “...just as much fun to watch him as it is to listen to him.” (Anshel Brusilow, Dallas Morning News). Born and raised in California, Ashu began playing the saxophone at age 10. His love for performing quickly became apparent and he began entering various competitions. Ashu has won First Prizes at the International Heida Hermanns Competition, International Kingsville Wind Instrumentalist Competition, National Federation of Music Clubs Competition, National Midland-Odessa Competition, National Lennox/RSO Competition, National George S. Howard Competition, and National Alliance for Excellence Competition. In addition, he has been overall winner of the Houston Symphony, Keweenaw Symphony, Skokie Valley Symphony, and Northwestern University Concerto Competitions. Others awards include overall winner of the American Opera Society Competition, First Prize winner of the WAFA Concerto Competition, winner of the Interlochen Governor’s Scholarship, and Grand Prize winner of the Houston Symphony Flores-Smith Competition. Ashu has toured as concerto soloist with symphony orchestras throughout the world (Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, etc.) and has been presented on numerous prestigious recital series, with recent venues including the Vienna Konzerthaus and Kravis Center. Upcoming engagements include concert tours and performances at music festivals throughout Europe, New Zealand, Australia, the Baltic, and the USA. Ashu received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in saxophone performance from Northwestern University and is currently based in the Chicago area. For more information on Ashu, please visit his website at www.ashuonline.com.
