Welcome to SAAAPThe Southeast Asian Art Academic Programme (SAAAP) at SOAS University of London is a transformational programme which aims to advance the preservation and understanding of ancient to pre-modern Hindu and Buddhist art and architecture in Southeast Asia.

Launched in 2014, SAAAP is supported through a groundbreaking £15m grant from the Alphawood Foundation, and leads on a range of important activity in research, dissemination, publications, outreach and scholarships. We work both within the Southeast Asian region as well as at SOAS itself to support outstanding scholarship in the field.

What are the Alphawood Scholarships? The Alphawood Scholarships are the cornerstone of the Southeast Asian Art Academic Programme. Through these Scholarships, SAAAP is supporting an estimated eighty full postgraduate awards between 2014 and 2019. The Scholarships are designed to bring exceptional Southeast Asian students, experts and future leaders to SOAS to undertake postgraduate studies at one of the world’s leading institutions in the study of the region.

Alphawood Scholars are supported to undertake a range of postgraduate programmes on offer, including:

• PhD and MPhil programmes

• Master of Arts (in History of Art and/or Archaeology or Religious Arts of Asia)

• Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art

• Postgraduate Certificate in Asian Art

Alphawood Scholarships provide students with an excellent package of support, including:

• Full tuition fees for the length of the academic programme

• Full English-language pre-sessional and in-sessional fees, as may be required (up to one year)

• Generous living allowance

• Reimbursement for relevant flights, visa fees, health checks and English-language examination costs

• Dedicated and ongoing support from the SAAAP Management Office, as well as from dedicated staff across SOAS

EligibilityTo be eligible for an Alphawood Scholarship, you should:

Your personal statement, references, transcripts and other relevant information in your application will be considered to assess the above criteria.

If this assessment shows that you require English-language training in advance of taking up your postgraduate programme at SOAS, your Alphawood Scholarship will be expanded to enable you to take up English Language and Academic Studies (ELAS) at SOAS for up to one
