OCTOBER 2008 / ELK CALL PAGE 3

From the Station of Fidelity

Let me begin by thanking Kevin & Constance Perkins, as well as Jim Anderson. I want tothank Kevin & Constance for doing such a great job on our Rudy Kaul’s night at the Races. Itwas an outstanding event, and raised a good amount of monies for the Elks National Foundation. The event was attended by many, and everyone had a great time. Thank you to DavidSkelton and Larry Hudson, as well as all of the back room workers. I want to congratulateJim Anderson for a successful Labor Day. It was one of the best we have had in the last 4-5years. Thank you to ALL of the volunteers who helped out on this day; it was a total teameffort. The house was packed, and EVERYONE had a great time. Dan & Jack did their usualfantastic job on the Pork and Beef, Kirk’s beans were such a hit, he had to go back to makemore, and the Slaw was a great compliment. Thank you Louise. Overall, the Labor DayWeekend was a huge success, thanks to all who spent part or all of their day at our lodgethat weekend. Without members and their friends attending these events, none of this wouldhave been possible. Lastly, I want to thank “Chili” Bob and Ann, for their dedication to ourkid’s games. They, once again, were lacking for help, but stayed with the games ALL DAY! Their dedication to our kidsdoes not go unnoticed and is very much appreciated.

October has many great events as well. Please come and support our Policeman’s Appreciation Night on the RE-SCHEDULED night of 10/23/08. Come and let our police know that they are appreciated, and doing a great job for ourcommunity. The Elkenders Halloween Rally is at the end of the month on 10/30-11/1. All of their events are too muchfun to miss. Make your reservation with the Elkenders or go to www.elkenders.org for more information. FootballSunday is still going strong. We now have 3 televisions hooked up for the Football Package, which means up to 6 outof market games every Sunday. We have great food & drink specials, and things to do for the kids. So come and enjoyfootball Sunday with us.

I again want to stress and ask that all members start using their cards to enter our front door, instead of just ringingthe bell. Many times, our bartenders are the ones who have to stop what they are doing to let you in. Doesn’t sound liketoo much to just push a button to open the door does it? Maybe not, but when you have to do it 25-30 times a shift orin an evening when there is a large line at the bar, it places an undue amount of stress on the bartenders, and bringsdown our quality of service to members who are standing in line waiting. It does not take much to reach into your backpocket, or your purse, to get your card out, and use it to enter. In addition, do not be offended if someone asks to seeyour card, it is a privilege to be part of this organization, and we should all be proud to show our cards. I know that I doEVERY time I come through the door.

I want to thank everyone who helped with Labor Day. Please mark your calendar for thefollowing events.

October 4 is District Casino Night. This is a Fund Raiser for our Major Project, cost is$30.00 per person, and includes Pasta Bar Dinner and $500.00 in script. This replaces ourannual trip to an Angel Game.

November 22 is the Leading Knights all you can eat Pasta, at Huntington Beach ElksLodge. Cost is $15.00. Cocktails at 5:00 P.M. Dinner starts at 6:30 P.M. dancing at 8:00 P.M.Bob Genelle will be cooking. I would really like our lodge to be well represented since I’m thePresident of the Leading Knights association.

Sunday Football; we now have the NFL Package so we can get all the games. October 12,we will have a couple of former NFL players here to meet you and sign autographs. When yousee me, I will tell you who they are. These guys have not been here before. We will haveplayers here once a month during the season. Also, a big thanks to our new Football crewLeslie Miller & James Brown, they are doing a great job.

I have wanted to say this for a long time in print; thank you to two of the hardest workers we have. These two peopledress up and go to so many events, make so many people laugh and feel good, we are lucky to have them and they areJim & Connie Perkins our Clowns.

From the Station of Brotherly Love

Fall is just around the corner, and along with this season comes Elks Training. This trainingfalls under my chair. It is a chance for all members to become more familiar with the policies, and procedures of both the Grand Lodge and the Garden Grove Lodge. In the next fewmonths I will be contacting as many members in the lodge as possible for this training; it takesvery little time but is very beneficial to you as members. I am looking forward to talking with asmany as possible in the near future.

It has been a very busy summer for us all, but membership still needs to be a topic thatshould be on all of our lists. We have a new class coming in the first week of September, so ifyou see one of our new blue badges please introduce yourself and make them feel at home, after all this is now their lodge also. Introduce them to as many of the committee chairmen thatyou know and let’s get them involved.

A safety topic also needs to be addressed. Please do not take glass cups and glasses intothe park. These are easily broken and we do not want any of the children to step on brokenglass. The bartenders should only be giving you plastic glasses if you are in the park, but ifyou are inside, and wish to take a drink outside, please have them put the drink in a plastic cup.

From the Station of JusticeGreetings my fellow members!

I would like to thank all who attended and volunteered at Rudy Kauls Night at the Races. Itwas one of the best in years. A huge thank you to Constance who did a great job helpingorganize the event, and make sure I’s were dotted and T’s were crossed. Larry Hudson steppedin as the back room genius and he and his crew were fantastic.

Speaking of fantastic! Jim Anderson did a wonderful job bringing the Labor Day Festival toone of its most successful outcomes in years. Kudos to him and his legion of volunteers whostepped up and help make the day a raging success. The names are too many to list, but gatekeepers, table workers, raffle workers, Emblem, cookers, servers, bartenders, the Tiki hutcrew, beer wagon crew, clowns, kid booth folks, set up crew, cleanup crew, etc, etc. Thank You!And anybody I left out! I had serious doubts about whether we were going to bail out the carsales. You stepped up to the plate and we did indeed make money.

I am still open to new ideas for next year for doing a fundraiser that can replace the carraffle. Please let me know if you think you have an idea that might work.

As I write this, we just did initiation last night. It went great. I am happy to say one of my sons is now a member andthat makes us a 3-generation family at the Garden Grove Lodge! My son John wants to start up a bowling league, soanybody out there who want to get in, please let me know and I will get your info to him. Our last couple of classes havebeen smaller than usual. Let’s keep up the push to get new members, it is the lifeblood of our lodge. Griz is doing a greatjob trying to beat down the Lapsation list. It is hard work. If you know someone that has lapsed please ask them downfor dinner, a taco, burger, or a beer. Get them back and feeling like a part of us so they will want to stay. We are headinginto the holidays as well, so the Great Heart of Elkdom will be beating strong with our many charity functions, a goodtime to remember and remind others why they joined in the first place.

We are toying with the idea of bringing back The Jack of Spades game. If we do there may be some new rules thatyou will be notified about. If not, then we need to find a way to fill the void on Saturday nights to keep the club operatingin the black. Please let me know if you might have an idea to increase attendance on Saturday nights.

Casino Night is October 4th and is a District fundraiser to replace the Elks Night at Angel Stadium. Come have a ball, and help raise some money for the Purple Pig. The Elkenders Halloween Rally will be at the end of the month. Asalways, check your calendars. There are many opportunities to have fun and be helpful coming in the months ahead.

OCTOBER 2008 / ELK CALL PAGE 5

After getting theElk Call on time foralmost a year, at leastby most members, wehad two months oftotal Post Officedisinterest. Bentley

Printing, our printer, and I, tried to convince themthat this is dated material, and explained how muchour members use this information to determine whenspecial events occur, what is going on in the lodge, how the health of their friends are, and other mattersof importance. So I was really pleased to see theSeptember issue arrive in many of our homes by the26th of August. I was so pleased with my efforts; Ialmost dislocated my shoulder patting myself on theback. Then my wife told me that the Chamber ofCommerce had the same problem for the last twomonths also, but she received her ChamberNewsletter this month, the day after it was mailed, and didn’t have any conversation with the Post Officeat all. So I guess it was a random happening. In truthit has been on time more often than not, but everymonth is a suspense story.

We have been told that with the glut of politicalmailers due in September and October, it can be lateagain because political mail goes before our mail.We shall see what happens, but we are still trying todo what’s best. Perhaps changing Post Offices wherewe send our mail may be the answer. Some peoplehave indicated that it might be. Whatever it is, we willkeep you posted. (No pun intended.)

What a great day we had at thelodge on Labor Day. It was alsobeautiful weather wise, and certainlya marvelous day for a fund raiser. Thanks go to Jim Anderson, JohnMiller IV, and all the Elks, for givingus the opportunity to participate. TheEmblem Club had 39 membersworking and helping in somecapacity. I am so proud to have hadso many members there. We hadmembers working as Elkenders, serving food, selling 50/50 tickets, and also out of our ownbooth.

Thanks to all the ladies that are Emblem members for beingthere, and working. What a great representation of Emblem!

The month of October brings our Fall Review and Spaghettidinner.

Please volunteer for the show, whether you can sing, ornot—whether you can dance or not, call Jo Johansen. Jo canalways find a great song etc, for you to do. If you don’t want totake part, come on down for a good dinner, followed by a greatshow and enjoy yourself. This is a great evening and everyonehas such a good time. Meet other Emblem members, and otherElks, you’ll be so happy that you did.

Always remember “Emblem will fill your heart with LOVE”.

God bless you all,Rose Marie QuinnEmblem President

Acknowledgement of Commendable Action

On Friday, August 29 during our Friday night dinner an elderly woman named Barbara McClendon, and her husband, were visiting our lodge from the Palm Springs area. Barbara collapsed during dinner. It was a frightening moment for ourmembers, guests, and employees, as well as Barbara’s husband Gene. Fortunately we had two individuals that immediatelycame to her rescue. They determined the severity of the circumstances; and that Barbara was unresponsive and notbreathing.

Dan Arbgast, a member, and Juan Medrano, a waiter at our lodge, performed CPR on Barbara until the paramedicsarrived. Dan is very knowledgeable and has extensive training in the field of medical procedures. Juan has attended aclass at our lodge, which was given to employees regarding CPR procedures, and was awarded a certificate uponcompletion of training

It was not until the paramedics arrived that those concerned realized that Barbara’s heart had stopped and she wasactually lifeless. The actions of Dan and Juan sustained Barbara until the Paramedics arrived. They had the necessaryequipment to attempt to revive Barbara. We kept losing her and she needed further attention.

Barbara was transported to Garden Grove Hospital where she was revived and has been in ICU. Barbara is nowdoing well, responding well, and suffered no trauma or memory loss. Her daughter informed me that they are transferringher to Long Beach Memorial for further studies and let us know that it was not a heart attack. Barbara had simply flat-lined.

There were many members who aided in the assistance to Barbara. In fact, there were too many to mention. I felt itproper to acknowledge the two special people who saved a persons life at our lodge:

Great job Dan and Juan! Your actions were highly commendable and will remain in the thoughts of many, includingBarbara and her family.

Thank you from myself and on behalf of the members and guests of the Garden Grove Elks Lodge #1952.I will advise on Barbara’s condition upon receipt of additional information.

OCTOBER 2008 / ELK CALL PAGE 11

ELK OF THE MONTH SEPTEMBER 2008

Our Elk of the Month for September is Karen Palmer. Karen is a newer member, and since she hasjoined our lodge, she has made a great effort to get involved. She has become a prolific contributorto our entertainment committee, taking the lead on several dances, securing gifts for our raffles, and organizing the fun events. You can also catch her working on the upkeep for our Rose Gardenas well. Karen is always there to step up to the plate when needed, and for this, she has beennamed Elk of the Month for September.

ELK OF THE MONTH OCTOBER 2008

Our Elk of the Month for October is Steve Fazio. Steve has also become very involved with ourentertainment committee. He makes signs and flyers for most, if not all, of our events. He has alsotaken over the large task of becoming Public Relations Chairman. Thanks to Steve’s efforts, wenow are getting much needed publicity for our community events in the Orange County News,Garden Grove Journal, and articles in the Register for our Veterans Day and Labor Day events. We actually had a radio station at our lodge on Labor Day, and they did an interview on air with JimAnderson publicizing our event. I believe that went a long way in the increase of attendance at our event. We are nowalso getting regular visits from channel 3 as a result of Steve’s efforts. For these reasons, Steve Fazio has been namedElk of the Month for October.
