Culture and Tourism

Notice of Intention to Designate a Provincial Historic Resource

(Historical Resources Act)

File: Des. 0872

Notice is hereby given that no less than sixty days from the date of service of this Notice and its publication in the Alberta Gazette, the Minister of Culture and Tourism intends to make an Order that the site known as the:

Buttermaker’s House, together with the land legally described as:

Plan RN21 (XXI) Block 1 All that portion of Lots 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 which lie north west of the north west limit of Road Plan 3401KS Excepting thereout all mines and minerals

and municipally located in Red Deer County, Alberta

be designated as a Provincial Historic Resource under Section 20 of the Historical Resources Act, RSA 2000 cH-9.

The reasons for the designation are as follows: The heritage value of the Buttermaker’s House rests in its association with the history of the dairy industry in Alberta.

Page 3: The Alberta Gazette · THE ALBERTA GAZETTE, PART I, SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 - 703 - Built in 1913, the Buttermaker’s House strongly reflects the social and economic context of the dairy

THE ALBERTA GAZETTE, PART I, SEPTEMBER 29, 2018

- 703 -

Built in 1913, the Buttermaker’s House strongly reflects the social and economic context of the dairy industry in early twentieth-century Alberta. It was constructed for William Jackson who had been recruited to work as buttermaker at the Markerville Creamery after several years’ experience in Innisfail. Jackson was strongly representative of the class of skilled artisans who oversaw butter production and quality control on a modern, scientific basis in the early 1900s as dairy production increasingly shifted from individual farms to large-scale industrial facilities like the Markerville Creamery. Jackson lived at the Buttermaker’s House and worked at the creamery for ten years, during which time he won multiple quality awards at provincial competitions and played a leading role in the Alberta Dairymen’s Association. The house was thus a residence that served the needs of Jackson and his family and also reflected the creamery’s need to attract skilled workers vital to the facility’s long-term success. The building’s overall design and high level of interior and exterior integrity clearly convey its primary domestic function, while its close proximity to the Markerville Creamery communicates its historic association with this crucial local industry and, more broadly, the social context of rural industrialization in early twentieth-century Alberta.

It is therefore considered that the preservation and protection of the resource is in the public interest.

Any person who wishes to make a representation regarding the proposed designation may do so by submitting a written request to Matthew Wangler, Executive Director, Alberta Historical Resources Foundation, 8820 – 112th Street, Edmonton, Alberta, T6G 2P8. Any such request must be made within 30 days of the publication of this notice. At the end of the 30-day period, the Foundation will fix a date for the hearing of representations and will notify all those who have advised of their intention to make representations. On the date fixed, the Foundation will hear representations from all parties who have expressed an interest in doing so.

Dated this 11th day of September, A.D. 2018.

David Link, Assistant Deputy Minister Heritage Division
