The Agent Orange Drums
A Poem
By
Alan Oates
Vietnam 68 - 6955 gallon drumsJust barrels of painted Steel
We had no reasonTo fear their fill.
An orange stripeTo announce their name
How were we to knowOf their future fame
Vietnam, Thailand, Laos,Cambodia too
Hard to countAll the places they were used
5It killed the grassThe plants, the trees
Just to make the enemyEasier to see
Scientists criedThis is not good
But Washington D.C.Just Never Understood
Nam Vets came homeTo no ticker tape parades
Just a clock ticking toFuture illnesses and maladies
Some grew sick quicklyOthers delayed
Vietnam VeteransMore are afflicted each day
Cancer, Diabetes,Parkinsons too
Veterans dying Their families continue to lose
Their Children SufferFrom mysterious maladies
The Agent Orange Legacy Continues its ways
55 gallon drumsHave rusted away
All the Nam VetsAre Gone to their graves.
