THE AGE OF EXPLORATION
![Page 2: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Essential Question:
What factors motivated the European Age of Exploration?
![Page 3: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
From the 1400s to the 1700s, Europe experienced an “Age of Exploration”
As a result of exploration, European nations grew powerful and spread
their influence throughout the world
The Renaissance encouraged curiosity and a desire for trade
MotivationsMotivations: Why did Europeans want to explore?
![Page 4: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
GOLD (MONEY)A desire for new sources of wealth was the main reason for European exploration
The Crusades and the Renaissance stimulated European desires for
exotic Asian luxury goods
Merchants began looking for quick, direct trade routes to Asia to avoid dealing with Muslim and
Italian merchants and increase profits
![Page 5: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
GLORYThe Renaissance inspired new possibilities
for power and prestige
Exploration presented Europeans the opportunity to rise from poverty and gain fame, fortune, and status
Kings who sponsored voyages of exploration gained overseas colonies: lands that were sources of wealth for their nation and increased power
![Page 6: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
GODEuropean Christians, especially Catholics, wanted to stop the spread of Islam and
convert non-Christians to Christianity
Explorers were encouraged to spread Christianity or bring
missionaries who would focus only on conversions
![Page 7: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The Age of ExplorationTHE MEANSTHE MEANS: HOW were explorers able to sail
so far and make it back again?
Before the Renaissance, sailors did not have the technology to sail very far from Europe and return
![Page 8: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
NAVIGATION and MAPSTrade and cultural diffusion during the Renaissance
introduced new navigation techniques to Europeans
Magnetic compass made sailing more accurate
Astrolabe used stars to show direction
Maps were more accurate and used latitude and longitude
![Page 9: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
European shipbuilders built better ships; the caravel was a strong ship that could travel
in the open seas and in shallow water
Caravels had triangular and
lateen sails that allowed ships to sail
against the wind
A moveable rudder made the
caravel more maneuverable
Cannons and rifles gave ships protection

THE EUROPEAN EXPLORERS
![Page 11: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
EUROPEAN EXPLORERS
![Page 12: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
The Age of ExplorationWho were the explorers? Where did they go? How did they change world history?
![Page 13: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
PART IEarly Explorers
![Page 14: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Europeans were not the first to explore the oceans in search of new trade routes
Islamic merchants explored the Indian Ocean and had dominated the Asian spice trade for
centuries before European exploration
![Page 15: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Early Exploration
From 1405 to 1433, Zheng He led the Chinese treasure fleet on seven expeditions to Southeast Asia,
India, and Africa during the Ming Dynasty
![Page 16: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
But in the late 1400s, the European sailors did what neither Muslim nor Chinese explorers could:
begin global (not regional) exploration and create colonies to increase their wealth and power
![Page 17: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
EUROPEAN EXPLORATION
PART A:PORTUGAL
![Page 18: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Portugal was the early leader
in the Age of Exploration
![Page 19: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
In Portugal, Prince Henry the Navigator started a school of navigation to
train sailorsHe brought in Europe’s best map-makers, ship-
builders, and sailing instructors
He wanted to discover new territories, find a quick trade route to Asia and expand Portugal’s power
![Page 20: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Prince Henry’s navigation school and willingness to fund voyages led the Portuguese to be the FIRST to
explore the west coast of Africa
![Page 21: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Vasco da GamaVasco da Gama was the first explorer to find a direct trade route to Asia by going
around Africa to get to India
![Page 22: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Portugal gained a sea route to Asia that brought them great wealth
![Page 23: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
During the Age of Exploration, Portugal
created colonies along the African coast, in Brazil, and
the Spice Islands in Asia
![Page 24: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
EUROPEAN EXPLORATION
PART B:SPAIN
![Page 25: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
The Spanish government
saw Portugal’s wealth and
did not want to be left out
![Page 26: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
More than any other European monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain sponsored and
supported overseas expeditions
![Page 27: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Like most educated men of the Renaissance,
Christopher Columbus knew the world was
round and thought he could reach Asia by sailing
west
![Page 28: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Columbus reached the Bahamas in America, but thought that he had
reached islands off the coast of India
![Page 29: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
He would make four more trips to the New
World, increasing Spain’s control
![Page 30: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Despite the fact that Columbus
never found Asia, Ferdinand
Magellan still thought he could
reach Asia by sailing West
![Page 31: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Magellan became the first explorer to circumnavigate the Earth (go all the way around)
![Page 32: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
During the Age of Exploration,
Spain created colonies in North and South America
![Page 33: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Spain sent explorers called conquistadors to the New World to find gold, claim land, and spread Christianity
![Page 34: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Hernan Cortez
conquered the Aztecs
![Page 35: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Francisco Pizarro
conquered the Incas
![Page 36: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
The influx of gold from
America made Spain the
most powerful country in
Europe during the early years
of the Age of
Exploration
![Page 37: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
EUROPEAN EXPLORATION
PART C:ENGLAND, FRANCE, and
THE NETHERLANDS
![Page 38: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
England, France, and the Netherlands became involved in overseas exploration and colonization as well
![Page 39: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
England, France, and the Netherlands became involved in overseas exploration and colonization as well
![Page 40: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
The French explorer
Samuel de Champlain searched
Canada for a northwest passage to
Asia
![Page 41: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
After failing to do so, Champlain founded the French colony of Quebec
![Page 42: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
The French would soon carve out a
large colony
along the Mississippi River from Canada to
New Orleans
![Page 43: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
Unlike other European nations whose kings paid for colonies, the English colonies were paid for
by citizens who formed joint-
stock companies
![Page 44: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
English colonies formed along the Atlantic
Coast of North America by
colonists motivated either by religion
or wealth
![Page 45: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
The English explorer James Cook was the first European to make contact with Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii
![Page 46: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
Like England, the Netherlands (the Dutch) allowed private
companies to fund exploration
The Dutch had colonies in America and Africa, but the Dutch East India Company dominated trade in Asia
![Page 47: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
IN CONCLUSION…
As a result of the Age of Exploration, European knowledge of and influence over the world increased greatly
![Page 48: THE AGE OF EXPLORATION](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062521/568138eb550346895da09d5d/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
