LSPA, FOUNDER AND ADMINISTRATOR OF LCP CERTIFICATION EXAM
Put your best evidence on the table. Paralegals who have the Louisiana Certified Paralegal
certificate have demonstrated knowledge in general law, ethics, and civil procedure, as well as four
substantive law subjects specific to Louisiana. Along with prerequisite CLA/CP certification from NALA,
an LCP certificate is the undisputed professional credential for Louisiana paralegals. Examinations
are administered in the Spring and Fall each year, and a review course is offered periodically.
By: Jessie L. Cormier, CP, LCP Chairperson, LCP Certifying Board
The LCP exam was not administered in February 2019 while the LCP Certifying Board
considered changes to this voluntary certification program. LSPA and the LCP Certifying Board have
enjoyed a long relationship with NALA in which we were assisted in the administration of the program.
When the formal contractual relationship expired at the end of last year, the LCP Certifying Board
considered whether to make changes and what changes we might institute. It was determined that a
change would be made to the eligibility requirement to sit for the exam.
Initially, certification candidates were allowed to sit for the Certified Paralegal examination
before or after sitting for the LCP exam, assuming the candidate met the eligibility requirements set
forth by NALA. The LCP Certifying Board wanted to provide flexibility to paralegals. Many paralegals
took advantage of this policy. After considering what has long been thought to be confusing
instructions, the decision was made to allow only paralegals who have already achieved the CP
credential and were in good standing to apply for the LCP examination.
This change in eligibility requirements has been posted on LSPA’s website at:
http://www.la-paralegals.org/lcpcertification/certificationinformation.html
Paralegals who had already taken and passed the LCP exam and are in the process of taking
the CP exam are grandfathered in.
All Certified Paralegals (CPs) and Advanced Certified Paralegals (ACPs) are encouraged to
obtain the Louisiana Certified Paralegal (LCP) credential. The application form is on LSPA’s website at :
http://www.la-paralegals.org/lcpcertification/certificationinformation.html
(scroll down to the link in the box outlined in red).
The deadline to apply for the October exam is August 27, 2019.

What LSPA Means to a Paralegal By: Sandy Pourciaux, ACP, LSPA Treasurer 2019
Imagine a young girl starting out in a field where she knows nothing or no one. It’s the start
of a new career for which she has little or no experience except for what she learned in class. It’s a
career that she’s always dreamed about. She’s excited but at the same time afraid of the unknown.
She’s been through school for her career path and did well, but will it be enough? She doubts
herself. She begins to think she made a mistake choosing the paralegal field, but then she realizes
that whoever hired her chose her among several applicants and decided to give her a chance. It’s
her responsibility to make the best of it because someone had faith in her and saw something that
she probably hadn’t yet recognized in herself.
Several questions run through her mind. Where does she go when she has questions or
needs advice? Her co-workers are busy as well and the new associate attorney she is assigned to
can’t take the time for training because he’s enthralled in trial preparation or doesn’t know exactly
what to do with a paralegal. Let’s face it. He’s new at this game too. If she’s lucky, she finds a
friendly face in her office. The day to day duties as a paralegal start to become a good routine and
she learns much from her coworkers. After some time, she wants more, but more of what is the
question? She’s just not sure, so she begins some soul searching to find what that “what” is.
She learns of an organization comprised of paralegals around the state called the Louisiana
State Paralegal Association. She figures that she doesn’t have anything to lose in joining the
association. Maybe it will be fun to expand her friend base and network with others who are also
part of this special breed of white-collar workers. She’s invited to a social gathering of paralegals
consisting of both new and seasoned men and women. She is awed by the comradery and special
bond that this group has. She is welcomed with open arms into a world of friendly, loving, smart
and funny people who offer to take her under their wing as she walks the road she’s taken. There
are no regrets, no mistakes that can’t be mended or errors that can’t be corrected according to this
group. They tell stories of their experiences in the field, some of which cause her to laugh out loud,
and some painful, where loyalty and dedication to their career kept them doing what they loved, no
matter how difficult. She believes she has found her home in LSPA.
Years fly by while she’s doing her thing working daily in the field she loves. She stops to
ponder her life and career and her mind wanders back to those first days. She smiles. Does she
have any regrets? Of course, she doesn’t! She’s right where she wants to be doing exactly what
she was meant to do. Who does she give credit to for her success? Definitely, her coworkers in
those early days and all of her coworkers throughout the years, but most of all, she is thankful for
LSPA – her Louisiana State Paralegal Association, because it is they who made her the paralegal
she is today. One of the greatest decisions of her career aside from choosing the paralegal field in
the first place was joining LSPA because it is there, she became greater than she thought she could
ever be.
One small decision, a simple one, to join LSPA, may take you to places you thought you’d
never be, or achieve things you never thought you could. It may lead you to become greater than
you are now. Maybe one day, you’ll get to write an article for LSPA and tell your story, a great one
about you, your career, and your organization. LSPA wants you as much as you want them. Find
your “what” and you won’t regret it.

LSPA, A NALA AFFILIATED ASSOCIATION
NALA CORNER By: Deborah P. Fontenot, ACP, LCP
NALA Liaison
As a NALA Affiliated Association, LSPA encourages our members to see what NALA can do for you!
You don’t have to be a NALA member to check out the benefits on their website at www.NALA.org.
Here’s a sample of some of the information you will find.
Looking for a new job? Check out www.nala.org/career-center and you will find Job Search Strategies
in the Career Tips section. Just got a new job, or would like to find a new paralegal position in a
different field, and would like some additional training? Self-Study Courses, Live Webinars, and On-
Demand Webinars can be found at www.nala.org/continuing-education.
Better yet, expand your paralegal knowledge and become a Certified Paralegal. Get more information
at www.nala.org/certification/certified-paralegal-cp-program. Perhaps you considered getting your CP
a few years ago, and it was just too overwhelming…. Fear not, NALA has made some major changes!
The new CP exam has only TWO sections! The Knowledge Exam and the Skills Exam. Even if you never
considered certification before, now is an excellent time to check it out. Already have your CP? Check
out the web-based ACP courses designed to advance education in specific areas of law. That sounds
good, but you don’t have your CP? You can still take the course (but you don’t earn the ACP
credential). A list of courses can be found at www.nala.org/node/896.
Okay, that’s a lot of work! You want to have some fun while you learn? Then you want to check out
the annual NALA Conference and Expo held in July each year. This year’s conference was held at the
Westin Kierland Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona on July 11 – 13 and offered over 30 CLE sessions
on a wide variety of topics. NALA Conference is not just a learning opportunity, it’s a wonderful
opportunity to network with paralegals from everywhere. It’s a great opportunity to make friends with
other paralegals nation-wide. The three-day event includes socials, lunches, and plenty of other
opportunities to meet and visit.
This year, LSPA President and former NALA President, Karen Greer McGee, ACP, received one of the
highest honors awarded by NALA – The President’s Award! CONGRATULATIONS, KAREN!

NALA PRESIDENT’S AWARD
NALA President’s Award
DEBRA OVERSTREET, ACP
Henry Kissinger is quoted as saying that it is the task of the leader to get
people from where they are to where they have not been. As members of
the National Association of Legal Assistants we are acutely aware of fellow
paralegals that time and again contribute selflessly to the future of the
paralegal profession.
The NALA President’s Award recognizes outstanding accomplishments
of NALA members and their contribution to the future of the paralegal
profession through their leadership activities within NALA and
NALA affiliated associations.
Award recipients must be current NALA members, must have held
membership for at least two years, and must have at least five years of experience as a paralegal. The
recipients of the President’s Award have contributed greatly to the paralegal profession through their
work with NALA affiliated associations, and through their volunteer work on NALA committees and
task forces. Some on this list are also former presidents of NALA and are continuing their service to
the paralegal profession. Current NALA Board Members are not eligible for the President’s Award. The
nomination form is due May 1. Nominations must be submitted by NALA active members, and
nominees must be active members of NALA.
Each year the President of NALA appoints the President’s Award Committee. Former recipients of
the President’s Award are eligible to serve on the President’s Award Selection Committee. The duty of
the committee is to review nominations and submit their selection to the NALA Board of Directors. The
President’s Award may be awarded annually. The judging criteria for the President’s Award is:
1. How member was involved in the contribution.
2. Association and leadership achievements.
3. Community involvement and/or leadership position in community nonprofit corporation.
4. Must be a NALA member in good standing.
The recipient of the President’s Award is announced during NALA’s Annual Meeting of the
membership.
Although the deadline for the 2019 awards program has expired, detailed descriptions and
application form for the President’s Award is available on the NALA Website at: https://www.nala.org/sites/default/files/files/banner/Presidents%20Award%20Nomination%20Form.pdf

profession through her work with NALA affiliated
associations, and through her volunteer work on
NALA committees and task forces. Karen is an
immediate Past President of LSPA, as well as a Past
President of NALA.
Congratulations, Karen! We appreciate your

TECH TIPS AND TRICKS
MICROSOFT OUTLOOK PRODUCTIVITY TIPS - THE POWER OF QUICKSTEPS
By Bob Jullens, CP, LCP
With each newer version, Microsoft Outlook adds more powerful tools to make your office
life a little easier. One of those powerful tools is a feature called quicksteps. Quicksteps
allows you to make a one click shortcut to frequently performed task.
For instance, your attorney sends you an email containing a memo to the file and a request
for you to set up a meeting with the clients. Rather than going to the calendar, opening up a
new appointment, and cutting a pasting the email into the body of the appointment, you could
simply click a “quickstep”, and a new appointment will open up with the text of the email
already in it.
To create this quickstep:
1. On your quick access toolbar (see below), go to the quicksteps section, and click
“create new”.
Quick Access Toolbar
This will open up the edit
quickstep window.
2. Give your Quickstep a name.
3. Click the drop down menu to
choose your action. You can add
multiple actions on the same
quickstep.
4. Under the “appointment heading,
select “create an appointment
with text of message”.
10 | P a g e
5. If you wish, you can assign it a keyboard short cut.
6. If you wish, you can put a short explanation of the quickstep, which will pop up
when you hover your mouse over the quickstep in the quick access toolbar.
7. Click Finish.
To use your new quickstep, simply highlight the aforementioned email in your inbox, and click
the appropriate quickstep in the quick access toolbar. A new appointment will open with the text
already in the body of the appointment. Now simply enter the subject and day and time of the
appointment, and save.
Quicksteps can be used for any number of frequently performed tasks. You can set up a
quickstep to quickly forward an email received at work to your personal address. You can set up a
quickstep to quickly send an email to a certain group of people, such as only the paralegals in your
firm, or create a pre-written email reminder to hourly employees to turn in their time sheets.
Some of the other possibilities include creating a task with text from a message, reply to an
email with a meeting request, move an email to a certain folder, and more.

July | August 2018 F&F
The Possibilities are
ENDLESS
July | August 2018 F&F
We have the enviable position of being in a career
that has many, if not unlimited, options for
professional growth and direction. First, there are
many areas of law to choose; from the traditional
law firm and growing e-discovery to niche markets
such as drone law. Within the unique legal
specialties, there are non-profits and for-profit
corporations, law firms, and the education field that
can benefit from a paralegal’s skills and offer
paralegal positions.
Continuing Education is the paralegal’s gateway to
senior level, advanced, or unique work in the legal
industry. Certified Paralegals (CP) use Continuing
Legal Education (CLE) credits to maintain
certification. For many of us, CLE helps us prepare
for certification; however, it can also open doors for
paralegals looking to specialize or broaden their
knowledge.
As you grow in knowledge of your industry, you may
fall in love with your field. Hopefully, this inspires
you to look at the opportunities to become a subject
matter expert in the field. You can choose to
continue your education through NALA CLEs and/or
through post-graduate studies. This, along with
experience, can help you build an impressive skill
set that will help you stand out in your field. What
does a specialist look like? It is a paralegal who
performs great work, knows the current direction of
the field, and has the knowledge to be the
firm/local/ national go-to person. You are the one
able to find elusive answers, and you are exhibiting
leadership by taking roles such as writing or leading
seminars on the topic.
Many paralegals gain experience and education with
the desire to become leaders at their office.
Whether in a law firm or corporation, paralegal
leadership or other legal teams often falls to those
paralegals who have demonstrated initiative in their
professional career. You can show this through
involvement in your local NALA Affiliate, NALA, as
well as other organizations. The involvement with
legal associations will show your interest in, and
commitment to the legal field.
If you go beyond attending meetings and
conferences for CLE by participating in committee
and board activities, you are demonstrating to your
current, or future, employers your internal
motivation and willingness to step into a leadership
role. This is a great way to prepare yourself for a
management role and signal to your employer your
ability to lead.
The Human Resource (HR) field is another great fit
for paralegals. The legal nature of HR work falls
naturally within the paralegal skill set. Paralegals
with experience in HR and/or employment law,
whether at a corporation or a law firm, have much
desired work skills for the HR field: analytical skills,
legal knowledge, and familiarity with employment
law. Additionally, experienced paralegals
understand the need for tact and confidentiality that
is required at an HR office and have proven
themselves for that part of the job. Work in a
corporate law HR group or in a law firm
management team along with CLEs in employment
law will lay the groundwork for this field.
Many paralegal programs across the country hire
experienced paralegals as educators. A full
curriculum will frequently include introduction to law
courses, courses on timekeeping, litigation,
employment law, and e-discovery. Preparation for
12 | P a g e
working in the field of advanced education will
necessarily benefit from relevant professional
experience. Teaching experiences in the office or at
a legal group can also provide an entry to this field.
Choosing opportunities to write and speak can help
you determine if teaching is for you and provide
resume building experience. NALA provides
opportunities for teaching webinars and writing for
this magazine; other opportunities may include
substitute teaching or legal presentations at a local
paralegal program.
If you have an entrepreneurial spirit, you might
consider freelance work. Once a paralegal has a
marketable skill set, and hopefully, a large legal
network, this may become an attractive option. In
my opinion, of all the options I’ve discussed,
success in this area will require true subject matter
expertise that is gained through hard work,
continuing education, and years of experience.
Together, these will help you build an impressive
portfolio, strong references, and a network of
potential clients and attorneys. More importantly, it
is through your connections and references, that
you will demonstrate your understanding of legal
ethics. This will answer the spoken, or unspoken,
concerns of UPL–the unauthorized practice of law
(you knew this would come up) as an independent
businessperson.
Once again, as paralegals, we have so many
opportunities to grow professionally and direct our
legal career. It is both professionally and personally
fulfilling to obtain a paralegal certification or
advanced paralegal certification. When you are at
the NALA Conference or at other legal networking
events, talk to others about what they do as a
paralegal. I believe you will be surprised with their
answers and I hope that at some point you will also
be challenged to try something new.
