It has been a distinct honor to directthis wonderful play. The cast andcrew have been fantastic to workwith and I have particularly enjoyedwatching these young actors grow intheir craft.Tom Sawyer is a classic American

novel written early in Mark Twain'scareer, when humor trumped pessi-mism in his work. I have tried to em-phasize the humor in thisproduction, as well as the the sheerwonder of youth as seen throughthe eyes of Tom. It is not all fun andadventure though, as we see Tomstruggle with a crisis of conscience.Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finnare two iconic American characters, and I could not be happier with thefine young actors we have playingthem in our production. I would like to thank everyone whohelped out with this production, inparticular, Neil Brackett, who spentmany hours working on our set.Neil is extremely easy to work withand is seemingly unflappable. Iwould also like to thank the remark-able musicians who brought somuch life to the production. And Iwould like to thank Lauren Jones,my assistant director, on whoseeyes and instincts I can always rely. And I finally wish to thank the par-ents, for allowing me the opportunityto work with their talented children.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyerholds a special significance for myfamily and me. Prior to the 2004 pro-duction, our family’s involvementwas limited to Kim’s performance inthe pit orchestra for musical showslike Oliver! and Camelot. Since Kim is a percussionist, myinvolvement was the usual role ofthe spouse of a percussionist: road-ie. The 2004 production marked thestart of greater involvement for therest of our family at the RLT. Oursons Evan and Chase auditionedand made their first appearances onthe RLT stage as fence painters. Through the show, we got to knowJohn Barnett, Debbie Brown andWanda Jones. I have to mention a few othernames from that show as well. Thiswas Jonathan Chisolm’s first showand he has graced our stage manytimes since. And, Adam Isabel per-formed as Joe Harper… Adam re-turned to the stage later in a showthat I produced a couple of yearsago, The Man Who Came to Dinner.

Another significant entry to the RLTalso occurred in the 2004 produc-tion. Grayson Keating played therole of Ben Rogers. His mom, likemyself, was just another backstageparent. Today, Megan Keatingserves the RLT as our ExecutiveDirector. In this production of The Adven-tures of Tom Sawyer, our third sonIsaac is onstage for the show, andmy own commitment to the show isfar greater. With this show I am thankful forthe growing involvement of severalother families at the Rome LittleTheatre. I look forward to seeingthese young actors grace the stagemany more times in the coming sea-sons. We appreciate all our friends andfamilies at RLT who work so hard tobring a production to its final form onour stage. Many thanks to all of youwho make the Rome Little Theatresuch a great place.

Arrive earlyIt's a good idea to arrive at least 30 min-utes early so you can have plenty of timeto find a parking spot, pick up your tickets, use the rest room and get something at theconcession’s counter.

Use the restroom BEFORE the showand DURING intermission

Turn your cell phone offEven if you have it on vibrate, people canstill hear the buzzing and it's very distract-ing. Don't talk or text on the phone DUR-ING the performance. If you need to take acall, please wait until a scene change be-fore you leave.

Coming and GoingPlease don't get up and leave during theperformance unless it's an emergency. Ifyou do need to leave or come back in,please wait until there is a scene change.

FidgetingPlease sit still. Bumping your elbows intoyour neighbors or kicking the seat in frontof you is annoying. If you have kids, pleasekeep them in control.

« Sight linesTry to avoid large hairdos and hats. Alsoavoid snuggling up to your date because itmight block someone's view behind you.

« Pay attention to the announcementsthat are being made prior to each showabout the rules and regulations and thelocation of the fire exits.

« Do not whistle or scream out to the per-formers, except for a Bravo or Brava inthe finale.

Now for some Dos:

« Do laugh in appropriate places.

« Do applaud with enthusiasm in the ap-propriate places.

« Do tell all your friends, after the show, what a great time you had.
