Presents THE ADVENTURES OF HARLEQUIN & SCAPINO Artistic & Production Staff Director: Dominick Chicotel (Harlequin) Christine A. Madden (Scapino) Stage Managers: Alicia Nimrick (Harlequin) Acadia Kear (Scapino) Costume Designer: Lisa Wilson Production Manager: Billy Conklin SCA Theater Education Coordinator: Christine A. Madden, (440) 337 - 1401, [email protected] Office Hours: Tues. 9 pm - 4:30 pm, Thurs. 9 am - 4:30 pm & Fri 11 am - 6 pm *Times when Christine is most available to talk. About the Commedia: Both Spotlight Productions this winter, The Adventures of Harlequin and SCAPINO!, are based in the tradition of Commedia Dell’arte. This style of theater dates back to the Italian Renaissance and is the foundation for much of what we see on stage, T.V. and in films today. Commedia is a form of theater which utilizes stock characters and predetermined plots to provide a vehicle through which masked actors are able to create and perform physical and comedic bits. Influences from this style can be found in Shakespeare, Melodrama, Farce, Vaudeville, the works of Charlie Chaplin, The Marx Brothers & The Three Stooges, Looney Toons Cartoons and pretty much every sitcom ever made - just to name a few. SCA has chosen to focus on this style with the Spotlight students not only because of the historic theatrical context it provides, but also its emphasis on physical acting. Using the body and voice to make active story- telling choices onstage is a concept that the SCA Theater Education Department greatly believes in as the foundation of every effective actor. It is SCA’s hope, that through studying this method, young actors will add valuable tools to their “acting tool kit”, grow in their versatility as performers and have fun doing it! About the Directors: Dominick Chicotel (Director - The Adventures of Harlequin) Dominick’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater from Ohio University and a Master of Arts in Education from Ursuline College’s University School Teacher Apprentice Program. Dominick has taught at the Center since June, 2005. In that time he directed many Spotlight and Stories on Stage productions. Dominick has also taught theater for both the SCA Arts4Kids After-School Program and various summer camps. Christine A. Madden (Director - Scapino) graduated from Baldwin-Wallace in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater. In addition to holding the position of SCA Theater Education Coordinator, she also has the pleasure of directing and choreographing at SCA from time-to-time. Outside of Solon, Christine choreographs for the Brecksville Broadview Height High School’s Annual Spring Musical and Show Choir, the other “Music- in-Motion”. Attendance: As a cast member of this production, students are expected to be available for every rehearsal and arrive on time. However, we understand that things come up. This is why we permit up to 2 excused absences for each child (2 late arrivals or early dismissals from a significant amount of a rehearsal will equal 1 absence). We do ask that these be requested in writing at least a few days in advance so that we may make proper scheduling changes. At the very least, SCA requires a call in advance to alert staff in the event that a student will be late or absent from rehearsal. We DO NOT permit absences once “Tech Week” begins. Tech Week (the period of time which encompasses all Technical and Dress Rehearsals) is a very intensive part of the rehearsal process which involves putting all the technical elements and costuming of the project together. Absences during this time are not permitted because they are very disruptive not only to the technical process, but also to other cast members. A “no call, no show” or an absence during the mandatory “tech week” rehearsals will result in the student’s removal from the production.

Accountability: Students are also expected to come to rehearsal prepared and with the best possible attitude. If a student is absent for a rehearsal, it is their responsibility to contact another cast member or the stage manager and get caught up on anything missed. Please note that, at the directors’ discretion, a student may be removed from sections of the show if missed material has not been made up. Attitude: SCA views the Spotlight Youth Theater Program as a place where students can grow and mature as excellent young performers. In order to maintain this positive environment, SCA expects all of the students participating in this program to be positive and supportive to their fellow cast members. There will be a zero tolerance policy for any type of negativity, teasing or bullying while at SCA. Students are encouraged to speak with a director, stage manager or Christine Madden in the case of a conflict. Attire and Materials: Each student should come to rehearsal in comfortable attire that they can move well in. The ability to move will be especially important to rehearsals for these shows. When deciding what to wear, students should think about these rehearsals as a dance class. Flip flops, slip-ons, other open toed shoes and skirts should NOT be worn to rehearsal. Those with long hair should have it tied back for rehearsal. Other important materials that should be brought to each rehearsal include: dance shoes, a notebook, the show script, a pencil, a water bottle and extra work. Scripts: Because of the proximity of the start of these productions to the beginning of the city’s fiscal year, SCA was unable to order play scripts until very recently. Book scripts are in the mail and will be provided to students very soon. Until that time, a copied script has been provided to your student. In order to obtain their book script, students must hand their copied script into their director. Each book script is then the student’s to keep. Please encourage your student to write their name in their script and to take good care of it, only writing in it in pencil. If a script is lost, their will be a $10 fee to replace it. SCA YOUTH THEATER MISSION STATEMENT & CORE VALUES

SCA YOUTH THEATER MISSION The mission of Solon Center for the Arts Youth Theater programming is to educate and enrich the lives of children through quality theatrical experiences, which give students the opportunity to cultivate artistic abilities, build self esteem, develop life skills and nurture a love for the performing arts. SCA YOUTH THEATER CORE VALUES The core values listed below are the basic elements that shall guide all SCA Youth Theater participants (students, instructors, staff and parents) in their choices, actions and behavior while participating in any Youth Theater production, class, workshop or camp. These essential tenets clarify what the SCA Youth Theater program is all about and are the foundation of its curriculum.

KINDNESS/ RESPECT: To treat others the way one would like to be treated and support their artistic choices.

COLLABORATION/TEAMWORK: To work creatively and effectively with others toward a common goal, placing the needs of the group above the needs of the individual.

RESPONSIBILITY: To take ownership and remain organized in working toward

the execution of an assigned role or task.

LEADERSHIP: To take what one has learned and teach it to others by setting an example through personal attitudes and practices.

COMMITMENT: To overcome any preconceived personal limitations and

enthusiastically apply one’s best efforts to the execution of an assigned role or task.

GROWTH: To learn through the experience or instruction of others, to develop

new ideas and to allow one’s self to be positively impacted by an experience.

Page 5: THE ADVENTURES OF HARLEQUIN & SCAPINO

Understanding Your Commitment Part of the experience you will come away with from participation in this production is a strong sense of responsibility. With every great endeavor, perseverance, hard work and attendance are essential ingredients to success. As an actor, you are asked to make a certain commitment. We do not ask that you make Solon Center for the Arts the center of your life, but we do ask that you take the decision to participate in a play here very seriously. At the very least, SCA requires a call in advance to alert directors in the event that a student will be late or absent from rehearsal. A “no call, no show” or an absence during the mandatory “tech week” rehearsals will result in your removal from the production.
