families. We have been honoured by the Order of St. George. Currently the Grand Chancellor of the Order is a member of Branch 641, as are the Chair and Vice Chair of the Ottawa Commandery. Finally, we have begun re-ceiving long-overdue recogni-tion from the various Com-mands of the Legion. What is it that makes us so different? Why are we growing and ex-panding while other Branches are floundering, are in con-stant financial turmoil, amal-gamating and yes even clos-ing? The kudos are new com-ing and we are being asked by many how we do things. It’s no secret Comrades, look around you and see what our people are doing.

Volunteerism is the backbone of Branch 641 as it was in the early days of the creation of the Canadian Le-gion. You, each one of you, who help this Branch operate on a day to day basis

Reflections – Advance New Years

It seems almost trite but we really do need to think back and remember 2012 from both a personal and a Branch 641 perspec-tive! We especially need to count our many blessing as we have so much to be thankful for. As a Branch, 2012 seems to have been our ‘coming of age’, as we received award upon award and many honours, not just for being a Legion Branch but for being an integral part of the Barrhaven Commu-nity. We have shown ser-vice and leadership at every level and have shown out-standing support of our Li-ons Club, Rotary Club and the Barrhaven Food Cup-board. We have organized events and participated in many others to help indi-viduals and

need our help, food and shelter. The fight for the better and more equitable treatment of those who have served and still suffer for lack of the support they re-quire will continue. As a Branch let’s treat those is-sues as a challenge and opportunity for us to work more efficiently and effec-tively as we seek to amelio-rate the needs. For clearly at 641 ‘we can and do get it done.’ Have a Very Healthy Happy and Pros-perous New Year and count your Blessings for we are all truly Blessed regardless of our personal situations.

with a willingness, indeed a strong desire, to be part of ‘a winning team’. Our over-heads are low, our excite-ment and level of involve-ment and activity very high and it’s because of your par-ticipation. Many of you have been honoured for your dedication, service and vol-unteerism this year and they were rightly deserved. These awards have been at Branch, Community, Munici-pal, Provincial and National levels, including the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal. Kudos to you all as you have earned them. You are the reason we have accom-plished so much since re-ceiving our Charter in 2005. Give yourselves a Bravo Zulu and a pat on the back. Now the question and chal-lenge for us is how do we keep this momentum up as we approach a New Year. One thing for sure, 2013 is going to be a very challenging year for our economy, the job market, for families and for the need to support so many who will

Page 2

I would like to take a moment to thank the Barrhaven Legion and all their mem-bers, families and friends for supporting the Barrhaven Food Cupboard this year. It’s been a challenging year for many members of our community and your gener-ous donations of food and money have truly made a difference in many lives. On behalf of President Ken Ross and all of us at the BFC, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year. Comrades in Arms at Barrhaven Branch 641

Mr. Clarence W. (Gus) Este was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1931. His father bought a house on the South Shore, just after the Second War began, so his children could get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. They lived in a village called Mackayville, which is now called St Hubert, Quebec. In 1948, after completing high schools in Longueuil and St Lambert, P.Q., Gus took on a few temporary jobs as a shipper at various firms in town.

In 1950, Gus, along with some of his buddies, decided to join the Canadian Army Special Force, which was being raised for United Nations operations in Korea. After basic training he completed medical assistant trades training in Camp Borden. He then was sent, as a member of the 25 Canadian Infantry Brigade Group, to Fort Lewis, an American Army base near Seattle, Washington, USA. There the Canadian Army underwent advanced combat training in the field, preparing for what awaited them in the Korean War. He served 13 months in Korea as medic in support of our infantry and other UN troops before returning to Canada, where he chose to be released from the Army in 1952. He then won a competition and was hired as a civil servant at the Canada Post head office in Montreal. After three years there, quite bored with the pace of his life, he decided to re-enlist in the army, joining the Canadian Postal Corps.

He rose from a Private to a Master Warrant Officer and was commissioned from that rank directly to Captain in 1974. During his second career in the army, he participated in tours to Germany, Egypt (3), and Cyprus. He also sailed for three years as the ship’s and the fleet postmaster, aboard the RCN aircraft carrier – HMCS Bonaventure. His first two tours in the Middle East were as a Corporal in the Sinai Dessert 1959-60, and again in 1966-67. His third one, in 1977, was as a Major, on the Chief Logistics Office staff, HQUNEFME11. There he was responsible for all Postal operations for the group of UN countries serving in the Middle East, as well as for the Canadian Contingent serving in Nicosia Cyprus. He covered the entire region by road as he travelled the Middle East in a white, UN Passat wagon, to his units in: Ismailia, Cairo, Port Said and Alexandria, Egypt; Tel Aviv, Hersilyia and Jerusalem, Israel; the Golan Heights; and Damascus Syria. He flew to and from Cyprus in Canadian Forces aircraft, via Lahr, Germany.

In 1987 he retired from his last posting with the Canadian Patrol Frigate Project in National Defence H.Q. after completing 33 years of military service, plus three and a half years Public Service time. Since retiring, Mr. Este has worked quite extensively as a volunteer, serving as a District Governor with the Lions Clubs International organization in Canada and abroad. Gus was also on the Ontario Lung Association, the Head Injury Association, the Mayor of Nepean’s Task Force on Visible Minorities, nine years on the Nepean Public Library Board and served with a few other groups. He is also a member of the Canadian Korea Veterans Association and the Royal Canadian Legion. He is currently serving as the Immediate Past-President of the Barrhaven Legion, Branch 641.

Gus and Olive will have been married 60 years next June and they are the parents of four grown children, who live virtually all across Canada from west to east. One son, David is a Professor at the University of Calgary and Dean of his faculty. One daughter, Denise works for the Government of Manitoba in Winnipeg. A second son, Dwight, is a Chemical Engineer in Waterloo, ON and a second daughter, Deborah, is a Geriatrics Nurse in Trenton, ON. They are also very proud to have two beautiful granddaughters, Cynthia in Trenton and Morgan in Winnipeg. Plus one precious great granddaughter Ziva, also in Trenton.

Ho, Ho, Ho-liday Security! As this holiday season approaches, we would like to wish you a safe and happy holi-day. We ask you to remember that winter roads create dangerous conditions and we urge you to sloooooow down. In addition, the holidays can be an opportune time for criminal activity. The following are some of the more “holiday-centric” concerns:

Theft from Vehicles: Please do not leave valuables (including wrapped or un-wrapped gifts) in plain view in your vehicle. Remove valuables and lock your vehicle! Contact your local Ottawa Police Community Police Center for a free “All Valuables Removed” Card…they make great stocking stuffers!

Distraction Thefts: Do not leave your purse in the shopping cart! Not all people are good intentioned; that person who was only looking for assistance in reading a label at the grocery store was really a distraction so an associate could grab the wallet from your purse – Close it and keep it close!!!

Residential Break and Enters: Have someone watch your home if you are going away, use timers, have someone park in your driveway…etc. and of course, remove all valuables (gifts etc.) from view.

Secure your home and property – Together we can make our community safer!

Please give us a call using the numbers below:

The Barrhaven Legion once again participated in the Barrhaven Lions Santa Claus Parade, led by our Colour Party. Our brightly lit float was filled with Veterans who proudly waved to the thousands of people who came out on a cold Sunday evening and waited patiently

for the man in red. Andy Moore, our great friend from the Manotick Legion, pulled the float with his truck while his wife, Cathie, joined other members who walked beside the float.

Santa’s Visit to the Branch! By Debi Sereda

The voices of more than 50 children filled the Branch on Sunday, December 9 at the annual Children’s Christmas party. The hall was filled with parents, grandparents and children . . . lots of children . . . who were entertained by Yaki Music, fed by the Hospitality Committee, read to by Dave Voisey of the Bar-rhaven Lions Club and, finally, thrilled with the arrival of the “Man in Red,” Santa! Fresh from his arrival at the airport, Santa arrived in true Christmas style aboard a red mustang and he was greeted by excited children and parents alike. Santa handed out gifts to all the children, some of whom were happy to chat with him while others preferred to keep their distance. We share below a few of the photographs taken during the afternoon. All the photos can be found on our website, www.rcl641.ca. Thanks to the shoppers, the BBQers, the Hospitality Committee and the Branch for hosting such a fun afternoon and bringing so many smiles to little (and not-so-little) faces! And thanks to Santa for taking time away from his busy schedule to make a quick stop at the Barrhaven Legion.

The Way To A Happy New Year in 2013

To leave the old with a burst of song:

To recall the right and forgive the wrong; To forget the things that bind you fast

To the vain regrets of the year that’s past.

To have the strength to let go your hold Of the not worthwhile of the days grown old;

To dare go forth with a purpose true, To the unknown task of the years that’s new;

To help your brother along the road,

To assist with his work and lift his load; To add your gift to the world’s good cheer,

Is to HAVE and GIVE a HAPPY NEW YEAR. :the editor

Two members of Branch 641 participated in the Zone 8 Ball tournament in Orleans on December 1, 2012. 17 teams were entered and only the top four teams would advance to the next round. Dave St Amand and Geoff Kragtwyk breezed through the round-robin event with a 5-1 re-cord. Unfortunately, sometimes bad things happen to good people and we were unable to bring home the trophy and Zone title. Did you know that the Legion is a member of The Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League (RCEL) which supports veterans and ex-service members in present and for-

mer Commonwealth countries?

A number of years ago it was decided that The Royal Canadian Legion could be most effective, as an RCEL member, if it were to assume a special relationship and specific responsibility for veterans and their dependants in the Caribbean. As a result, the role of The Royal Canadian Legion, within the League, is to look after the interests of veterans in the Caribbean area. Having made the commitment, and using donations from Legion branches, the RCEL Welfare Fund was established.

In all, 14 of the RCEL's locations are in the Caribbean. They are:

Bahamas Dominica Montserrat Trinidad & Tobago

Barbados Grenada St Kitts Turks & Caicos Island

Belize Guyana St Lucia

Cayman Islands Jamaica St Vincent

Legion funds used to support these programs come from the membership through direct donations, or, on occasion, a small levy on each poppy sold to branches - and general Dominion Command funds. The fund is administered by the Legion's RCEL (Canada) Committee and assists veterans in the 15 coun-tries in the Caribbean region. Administrative overhead is minimal and care is taken to ensure the funds disbursed are not misused. The average value of these annual grants is between and $200 and $1,000.

The frequency of tropical storms, hurricanes and natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, and the resulting devastation, also calls for the allocation of emergency funds to help veterans. Without the emergency relief provided by the RCEL Committee, many veterans would be unable to afford the mate-rial required to rebuild after tropical storms, or other disasters.

The Legion also works in co-operation with the Canadian International Development Agency, the Cana-dian Forces, the Salvation Army and other agencies to deliver services to Caribbean veterans, and advo-cates for them through approaches to local and national governments.

The Royal Canadian Legion is committed to supporting the objects of the RCEL. The funds used in all ef-forts in the most recent years is approximately $300,000. Through participation in their programs the Legion does much to improve the lives of the less fortunate among the Caribbean's veteran population.
