Twenty-seven Named AP Scholars at Wilson Hall Because of their exceponal achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement (AP) Exams, 27 students received recognion from the College Board. About 22 percent of the 2.2 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to earn an AP Scholar Award. In May, 65 Wil- son Hall students became eligible to receive college credit by earning a score of 3 or higher on at least one exam. Of the 69 members of the class of 2018, 35 graduates passed at least one AP Exam and earned a total of 223 col- lege credit hours. Wilson Hall's average pass- ing rate is 71%, above the global average passing rate of 61%. The AP is a global academic program in more than 100 countries. Ms. Emma Catoe ’13 is the lower school computer science teacherand a member of the information technology department, and sheis the head coach for the J.V. tennis team and an assistant coach forthe varsity softball team. Ms. Catoe graduated from Winthrop Uni-versity with a Bachelor of Science in early childhood education andhas a year of experience with Sumter School District.

Mrs. Amy Jones is a kindergarten teacher with fifteen years of teach-ing experience, most recently at Trinity Day School. She graduatedfrom the College of Charleston with a Bachelor of Science in educa-tion and from Cambridge College with a Master of Arts in education.

Mrs. Courtney Moore is a four-year-old preschool teacher with elevenyears of teaching experience, most recently with Trinity Day School.Mrs. Moore graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelorof Science in early childhood education and from the University ofPhoenix with a Master of Science in education.

Mrs. Sarah Smith is the college counselor and has 15 years of experi-ence in college admissions, most recently at Georgia Southern Uni-versity. She graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor ofScience in psychology and from Georgia Southern University with aMaster of Business Administration.

Mrs. Sande Tisdale is a fifth grade teacher. A National Board Certifiedteacher, she has 25 years of teaching experience and retired fromSumter School District. Mrs. Tisdale graduated from the University ofSouth Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education anda Master of Science in early childhood education.

Joining our newly created campus safety team are Mr. Blain Schu-macher and Mrs. Ashley Wake. Mr. Schumacher is the Director ofCampus Safety and has 22 years of work experience with the Depart-ment of Defense, most recently as the as the assistant fire chief onShaw Air Force Base. Mrs. Wake, who works in the new gate house,has ten years of experience working in various capacities on U.S. AirForce bases.

Volleyball Team EarnsAcademic Recognition

The 2017 varsity volleyball team was recognized as an Academic All-Amer-ican Team for the third consecutive year by the American VolleyballCoaches Association (AVCA). The team was also selected as an Honor Rollteam for the second straight year, recognizing it for earning one of the 25highest team grade point averages in the United States. The AVCA recog-nizes programs in high school and college that excel in the classroom aswell as on the court. The Barons earned a team GPA of 4.6 and completed46 Advanced Placement and honors courses. On the court, the RegionChampion team (21-15) received a top four seed in the state tournamentand had five players selected to play in post-season all-star games. Theteam consisted of Abbie Beatson ‘21, Sarah Cain ‘20, Courtney Clark ‘18,Gracyn Coker ‘21, Chandler Curtis ‘18, Madison DesChamps ‘21, CameronDuffy ‘19, Drake Ives ‘18, Sydney Jarecki ‘19, Liza Lowder ‘18, Becka Noyes‘18, Betsy Noyes ‘18, Madison Reaves ‘18, Madi Sliwonik ‘20 and AndiGrae Wingate ‘21. Kindergarten students enjoyedthe annual Teddy Bear Picnic atthe start of the school year.Each student brought his or herfavorite stuffed animal toschool, and while the studentswere having their lesson, theanimals “escaped” from theclassroom. Once the escapewas discovered, the studentsset off on a trek throughout thecampus to find their lost ani-mals, culminating in a picniconce everyone was reunited.The special day gave the kinder-garten students the opportu-nity to tour all of the buildingson campus and discover wheretheir special classes (art, com-puter science, library, musicand P.E.) are located.

Sumter FeedsMy StarvingChildrenWilson Hall hosted a shift for the SumterFeeds My Starving Children and packed57,024 meals to feed 156 children for an en-tire year. The two-hour session held at theSumter Civic Center had 254 faculty mem-bers, alumni, students and their families par-ticipating. Organized by Mrs. Elizabeth MayesHyatt '02, school counselor, the Class of 2018led the fundraising effort to sponsor theshift. Feed My Starving Children is a Christiannon-profit that provides nutritionally com-plete meals specifically formulated for mal-nourished children.

MILITARYAPPRECIATIONNIGHT

To celebrate the military presence in our community, Wilson Hall sponsoreda Military Appreciation Night for the varsity football game on September 7.The school has enjoyed a decades-long relationship with Shaw Air ForceBase, home to the U.S. Air Forces Central Command, 20th Fighter Wing andNinth Air Force, as well as the Third Army/U.S. Army Central Command. Stu-dents from military families comprise 19% of the student body, including36% of the new students enrolling this year.

Twenty American flags, a Prisoner of War flag, and four South Carolina flags,loaned to the school by the family of the late Mayor Bubba McElveen andthe Sumter County Museum, were flown throughout Spencer Field. The var-sity cheerleaders painted a red, white and blue run-through banner for theteam that read “Here Come Our Heroes” and distributed red, white andblue balloons to the student fans, and for the night’s spirit theme studentsdressed in patriotic garb.

Captain Nicholas Lopresto, who serves as chaplain at Shaw AFB, offered theinvocation before the game. Chief John F. Kennedy, who retired from the AirForce after 24 years of service, sang “The Star Spangled Banner” and BellaLand ’21 sang “God Bless America.” Conducting the coin toss was ColonelDustin Smith, retired Air Force as Central Command Chief of Staff at ShawAFB. Mrs. Elizabeth Mayes Hyatt ’02, school counselor, coordinated the event.

ENROLLMENTWilson Hall opened the school year with 773 studentsand the school welcomed 134 new students, a recordnumber. Wilson Hall is the fourth largest school in theS.C. Independent School Association.

KindergartenDog Show

After reading the books Boomer Goes to School and MarleyGoes to School, singing “Dog Breath,” and enjoying Scoobysnacks, Wilson Hall kindergarten students sponsored a “dogshow” in their classes. Each student brought a toy dog to in-troduce in the show, and each dog received a blue ribbon incategories ranging from cutest to smallest.

Wilson Hall offered 29 week-long sports and enrichment camps as part of itsannual Above & Beyond Summer Programs, and nearly 400 campers partici-pated. The programs, open to the public, were for students in preschool through10th grade. Mrs. Brooke Wilder serves as the summer programs director.

Chavella Joseph ’32 & Morgan Brunson ’32 make their way onto Spencer Field to perform a mini-cheerleading routine. Theannual week-long mini-cheerleading clinic, sponsored by the varsity cheerleading squad, culminated with a performanceduring half time of a varsity football game. Over 100 girls in preschool through sixth grade participated in the clinic, whichwas held after school, when they were taught a dance, chants and cheers by the varsity cheerleaders.
