Accenture’s 2015 Vision identifies the forces driving this shift to the “We Economy”, and reveals the bold bets pioneers are making. The Internet of Things counts among the major forces—bringing every object, consumer and activity into the digital realm. Simultaneously, leading organizations are digitizing every employee, process, product and service.

For transport agencies and operators this means a rich, interconnected ecosystem comprised of third-parties, partner agencies, and vendors working to provide services in unprecedented ways—helping to drive ridership and reduce congestion while creating new opportunities for funding. It also means more empowerment of the transport workforce with tools that drive down the cost of running operations while improving outcomes and safety.

This 2015 report highlights five technology

trends Accenture believes will help to

take transportation service providers even

further on their journey to becoming a

digital business. It is supported by a related

Accenture global survey of more than 2,000 IT

and business executives.

Businesses must stretch their boundaries, both

literally and figuratively, to grow and succeed.

That notion—of stretching boundaries—is

the top-line message from the Accenture

Technology Vision for 2015.

Outcome Economy

TREND 2

“The true digital disrupters know that getting ahead is no longer just about selling things. It’s about delivering results. Welcome to the Outcome Economy.“

It will become imperative for transport agencies to consistently collaborate with third parties so they can provide the outcomes sought by travelers—getting to their to their destination in a simple, streamlined manner with no surprises. No single transport agency will be able to do this independently. These business partnerships will offer the data required to improve components of the trip such as the last mile, providing travelers with options such as bike-sharing information in real-time.

87% see more intelligent hardware leading to a shift from selling products or services to selling outcomes.

77% are taking part in open innovation initiatives, using APIs to exchange data and use technology platforms.

TREND 3

Platform (R)evolution“Enterprises are carving out new playing fields thanks to rapid advances in cloud and mobility technology. Platform-based ecosystems are the new plane of competition.”

Transport agencies are building platforms based on an open architecture, creating an ecosystem to deliver digital services to travelers. The ecosystem will include data from outside agencies such as city maps, attractions, bike-sharing, car-hailing, and other services. Open architecture will also support integration with local businesses enabling agencies to offer loyalty rewards and incentives that reward travelers’ use of public transportation.

81% say industry boundaries will dramatically blur as platforms reshape industries into interconnected ecosystems.

74% are using or experimenting with industry platforms to integrate data with digital business partners.

TREND 4

The Intelligent Enterprise“Software that learns and adapts is no longer a one-off project. It must be an all-encompassing effort that propels discovery and innovation throughout the enterprise.”

Transport operators will unleash intelligent software to analyze rich data and improve operations, develop experiences tailored to travelers and provide travelers with options to avoid congestion.

Operations issues such as bunching of vehicles can become a thing of the past as cognitive systems monitoring bus location data in real-time will streamline traffic signals and tell bus drivers what to do. Transportation networks will become more integrated allowing you to seamlessly transfer across transport modes—such as from a subway to your local bus—without long waits. In the future, your local bus may offer a more customized experience bringing you closer to your destination.

80% say applications and tools will take on a more human-like intelligence.

78% believe software will soon be able to learn and adapt to our changing world and make decisions based on learned experiences.

Drones, monitored by operators, flying regularly over the tracks will become a reality for track inspection, enabling operators to inspect more lines per person in a safer and quicker manner. The Internet of Things will drive better asset management practices as transport workers use tablets in the field to access sensor data in real-time and electronically capture maintenance information. Cloud technology will play a key role here to support the speed of accessing data.

Driverless vehicles aren’t just a possibility, they may become inevitability. And they will probably become a competitive force for transport agencies as fleets of electric driverless cars become available to passengers at the touch of a button on their smartphone. Transport agencies able to embrace the change will develop unique offerings to remain relevant to their passengers

Workforce Reimagined“As the digital revolution gains momentum, humans and machines must do more together. Successful businesses will embrace both as critical team members.”

78% agree successful businesses will manage employees alongside intelligent machines, ensuring collaboration between the two.

77% believe that within the next three years, companies will need to focus equally on training their people and their machines.
