A Final Passage in Genesis:A Final Passage in Genesis:Gen 22:15-18Gen 22:15-18

• This is the last of the recorded conversations between God and Abraham, and follows Abraham’s obedience to God’s test of sacrificing his only son Isaac (Gen 22:1-14).

• Based on this obedience, God affirms His commitment to bless Abraham and to multiply his “seed.”

• He also states that Abraham’s seed “shall possess the gate of his enemies” (Gen 22:17). This is a reference to their taking of the Promised Land.

• Once again the Lord affirms that in Abraham’s seed “all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.”

The Essence of the Abrahamic The Essence of the Abrahamic CovenantCovenant

– The Lord promised to make of Abraham a great nation. This includes both a multitude of descendants and a particular piece of land for those descendants to inhabit.

– The Lord promised to bless Abraham personally. He did this via provision of livestock (Gen 13:2), granting of victory in battle (Gen 14:1-24), and sons who were born to Abraham (Gen 16:15; 21:2-3; 25:1-4). Toward the end of Abraham’s life Moses writes that “The Lord had blessed Abraham in every way” (Gen 24:1).

– The Lord promised to bless all the nations of the earth in Abraham and his descendants.

– The covenant was reaffirmed to both Isaac (Gen 26:1-5) and Jacob (Gen 28:12-15).

• The children of Jacob/Israel become a great nation in the land of Egypt (Exod 1:7-9; Num 23:10).

• The Lord delivers this great nation from Egyptian bondage, again in accordance with the promises of the Abrahamic Covenant.

• The Lord brought the people out of Egypt in order that they might occupy the land promised to Abraham (Exod 6:3-5, 8).

• Israel’s ongoing existence as a nation, despite her idolatry with the golden calf at Sinai, was due to the Lord’s commitment to Abraham (Exod 32:11-14).

• The blessings promised in the Mosaic Covenant are in part a fulfillment of the Abrahamic Covenant (Lev 26:4-12).
