The District of Columbia law undor which a consumptive has been arrested and sentenced for frequenting a saloon is an extreme example of the new legislation against tuberculosis. In several States of the Union consumptives are now prohibited from marring. They may not teach in the public schools or ir minors become pupils. In Oklahoma physicians infected with tefbuculosis are refused licenses to practice. As a'result of the.socials movement against the diisease hovels and hospitals decline to receive its victims as guests of patients. Ministers will not marry them. Health resorts discourage their presence and a California city has threatened to deny asylum to visitors from the East know to have the disease in an advanced stage. All of this is evidence of a determined and praiseworthy effort to reduce the risk of infection. But consideration of equal justice should not be overlooked. If we are to create by law a parish lcass in which by the nature of tneir disease many refused people must included, we at least should compensate those from whom the privileges of society are withdrawn, If consumptives are to be segregated adequate provision should be made for their accommodation in hospitals, and mountain camps and for their sanitary housing under some formjof the community plan. The Cleveland experiment on tlrts line reveals a sense of society's moral obligation to the consumptive. All of this is evidence of a determinedand praiseworthy effort to reduce the riskof infection. But consideration of equaljustice should not be overlooked. Is theconsumptive a man and brother or a lepermac ne snouiu ue suujeuteu to socialostracism?
