Transcript of The 9 Tour & History, Cleveland
The 29-story Ameritrust Tower was built in 1971 and designed
by Marcel Breuer. It was the only skyscraper the famous
architect ever built. The tower was built immediately adjacent
and connected to the Cleveland Trust Rotunda
(1909).
Ameritrust merged with Society Bank which in the
90’s merged with Key Bank. Key Bank was
headquartered in the 57-story Key Tower, so the Ameritrust building was vacated. From 1996 to 2014 the building sat
empty. Years of dirt turned the concrete brown.
In 2005 Cuyahoga County bought the
complex with plans to build their new
headquarters on the site. The plan fell through and after
getting wrapped into the Cuyahoga County
corruption scandal, the complex was finally
sold to Geis Company in 2012 with plans for
a complete rehab. Almost immediately, Geis began cleaning
the filthy tower.
The P & H Buildings (Below) were demolished and a
new County headquarters building was constructed
on the site
The tower’s top half consists of luxury apartments while the bottom half is now the Metropolitan Hotel at the 9. The adjacent building known as ‘1010 Euclid’
was turned into additional apartments and the roof of this 12 story building will become an outdoor bar and lounge. The Cleveland Trust Rotunda will be turned
into a Heinen’s by early next year.
1010 Euclid had to be completely restored. The cornice was
removed and rebuilt to
accommodate the outdoor lounge.
The Metropolitan Hotel officially opened in September along with the Adega restaurant, Ledger Bar, Vault, and the apartments. The
Azure Sky Lounge and Heinen’s will follow early next year. The following are pictures of the completed complex. The restoration utilized
many artifacts from both the 1971 addition and the original 1909 Cleveland Trust Bank included
steel beams, vault doors, safe deposit boxes, etc.
