What is a FP? The FP is the main financial tool through which the EU supports research and development activities covering almost all scientific disciplines.
What may be financed? Frontier of knowledge, technologic development, demonstration activities, innovation activities, improvement of European infrastructures of research, formation of research; almost anything remotely related with science.
Who can participate? Universities, big companies, SME, public administration, (individual) researchers, (research) institutions, non-European-countries scientists, etc.

The 7 FP (2007-2013) 1. COOPERATION:
INSTRUMENTS
Collaborative Research: in all themes through -Collaborative projects; -Networks of Excellence; -Coordination Actions; -Support
Actions
Coordination of non Community research programs: Era-Net; Era-Net+; art.169
Joint Technology Initiatives (art.171; European Technology Platforms)
International Cooperation (opening all themes to Third Countries; actions of specific interest
of regions and macro-areas)
M.Rossano-CNR
INDIRECT ACTIONS
Cooperation: The instruments of the 7FP
1. Collaborative projects
Research aiming at developing new knowledge, technology, products , demonstration activities. Dimensions may vary: Large Scale Integrating Projects (IP) and Small or Medium Scale focused research actions (STREP).
2. Networks of excellenceTheir purpose is the durable integration of participants’ research activities. A formal committment is required.
M.Rossano-CNR
INDIRECT ACTIONS
3 Coordination and Support Actions
They are aimed at supporting or coordinating activities and policies in S/T , preparation of future actions, dissemination of results (networking, exchanges, conferences, studies and so on). They may be presented by a consortium or a single organisation.
They aim at developing and strengthening the coordination of national and regional research programmes in two ways: 1. Providing a framework for actors implementing public research programmes to improve coordination through new ERA-NETs or by broadening and deepening existing ERA-NETs; 2.Providing, in a limited number of cases, additional EU financial support to participants who create a common fund for the purpose of joint calls for proposals among national and regional programmes (‘ERA-NET PLUS’).
Era-Net; Era-Net+
Cooperation: The instruments of the 7FP
M.Rossano-CNR
INDIRECT ACTIONS
Art.169
The aim is integrating parts of national and regional programmes for implementing jointly, together with the EC, a real European research programme. The actions supported may cover subjects not directly linked to the ten themes if they have a sufficient EU added value. They can enhance the comple-mentarity and synergy between FP7 and activities carried out under intergovernmental structures such as EUREKA and COST.
Art.171/Joint Technology Initiatives (JTI)
They are aimed at combining private sector investment and/or national and EU public funding (including grant from the FP and loan from the EIB) . Joint Technology Initiatives may be decided on the basis of Article 171 of the Treaty or on the basis of the Specific Programme Decisions in accordance with Article 166 of the Treaty.
Cooperation: The instruments of the 7FP
M.Rossano-CNR
The objective is to reinforce excellence, dynamism and creativity in European research and improve the attractiveness of Europe for the best researchers from both European and third countries, as well as for industrial research investment. The implementation
is by European Research Council. The support is aimed at encouraging investigator driven, or bottom-up research on
iniziative of researchers.
