OHANA Waikiki East Learning Center

Join us as HMSA Health Educator Gene Corpuz helps us to understand diabetes. Everyday someone is either diagnosed with diabetes or diagnosed with a disease as a result of having diabetes. According to the Hawai‘i Diabetes Report, 2004, and Director of the Department of Health, Chiyome Fukino, MD, it is estimated that approximately 100,000 people in Hawaii have diabetes and more than 900 people die every year of related complications, making it the seventh leading cause of death in the state.

Did you know:Native Hawaiians, Filipinos, and Japanese have higher rates of diabetes than CaucasiansPrevalence rates of diabetes are similar across all of Hawai‘i’s countiesNative Hawaiians have the highest diabetes mortality rates when compared with the other major ethnic groups, and Caucasians have the lowest diabetes mortality ratesObesity rates are significantly higher among adults with diabetes when compared with adults without diabetesAlmost 60 percent of patients receiving kidney dialysis for end-stage renal disease have a primary diagnosis of diabetes

Diabetes is a serious, common, and costly disease, but by working together, we can create a healthier Hawai‘i. Outrigger brings this opportunity to you in this short, informative seminar that will help you to understand what diabetes is; determine the warning signs, steps to prevention, and if you have diabetes, how to take control of it. Join us as we Lunch & Learn!

Saturday BriefingPage 5

It was a busy week for the Outrigger Reef on the Beach when two important partner events were held on consecutive nights last week. Representatives from Alaska Airlines were in Hawai‘i over a four-day period to meet with state, industry, and tourism officials to talk about the airlines expanding service to Hawai‘i. Alaska Air held an industry reception at the Outrigger Reef ’s Voyager Deck on August 17 with more than 100 in attendance. It was a memorable evening, with Alaska Airline’s President Brad Tilden sharing his team’s excitement at being an important and growing part of the Hawaii community. The airline started its Hawaii service from Seattle in October 2007 and currently has 16-17 flights a day, depending on the day of week. Starting in January 2011, Alaska will increase its flights with daily nonstop service between Bellingham, WA, and Honolulu. Come March, the airline will add service between San Jose, CA, and Kaua‘i, as well as flights between Oakland, CA, and Kaua‘i. Everyone had nothing but good things to say about the newly revamped Outrigger Reef and the stunning Voyager Deck; the service, capably handled by the Outrigger Reef Catering Team; and the food, catered by award-winning Chef Chai Chaowasaree. The very next night, another 100 industry friends, colleagues, and media representatives descended on the Outrigger Reef, this time for Morris Visitor Publications launch of Outrigger’s

At the event, stories were brought to life with a sample of cuisines from restaurants at the Outrigger Reef, Outrigger Waikiki, and Waikiki Beach Walk®. The event also reacquainted Outrigger Executives and Hotel Managers on the refreshed design and features that reflect the interests of the Outrigger guests, while creating a buzz among Outrigger tenants and advertising and public relations agencies for advertising opportunities. The Islands of Outrigger books are now in all guestrooms of Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Hawai‘i, and the new OTV programming begins airing in September at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach, Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach, and in all OHANA Hotels & Resorts. Outrigger’s Pre-Tax Monthly Bus Pass Program

As you might expect, there are some important

details to this program that need to be understood:

• You must be a full- or part-time employee.

Employees with pre-tax parking are not eligible.

• Bus passes are for employee use only, and

are non-refundable and non-transferable.

• Bus passes must be purchased for full months

only; no partial-month purchases are possible.

• Employees requesting either to enroll or

end their participation in the program

must submit their completed form to

Human Resources by the 1st of the month,

one month prior to the effective date of the

bus pass. (For example, for a bus pass for

October, forms must be received in Human

Resources by September 1.)

• Deductions will be made from the second

paycheck of the month.

• Passes will be distributed by each property’s

Housekeeping department beginning the

25th day of the month before the month

for which the pass is valid. (For example,

the bus pass for October will be distributed

beginning on September 25.)

• If you are not already signed up, you may

begin this benefit for your October bus

pass. To sign up, see your Supervisor or the

Human Resources Service Center before

public transportation system. In fact, TheBus is the only mass transit system to be recognized twice by the American Public Transportation Association as “America’s Best Transit System” (for the years 1994-1995 and 2000-2001). TheBus has received many other accolades and awards for its long tradition of providing customers and visitors an efficient bus operation, for its commitment to the people of Honolulu, and for its continuing effort to improve service throughout the island. Today TheBus is heavily used by local residents and visitors alike. Thanks to its high dependability and frequent schedules, many of our O‘ahu visitors use TheBus to get around instead of renting a car. There are several advantages to this. It allows visitors to avoid driving unfamiliar, and sometimes narrow, winding roads. It saves the cost of car rental, gasoline, and parking. Plus it’s a great way to sightsee. Visitors can view the scenery without having to keep their eyes on the road, and when they see something of particular interest, they can get off at the nearest stop, then catch another bus when they are ready to move on. Many local residents also find TheBus an inexpensive and convenient way to get around. And from a “green” perspective, it’s important to realize that TheBus has the lowest cost per passenger mile of any ground transportation system in Hawaii and one of the industry’s lowest costs per passenger. Think about this: The average person who drives from Ewa Beach to Waikiki every day will probably spend over $2,000 a year just for gas and parking. This doesn’t count the cost of vehicle payments, insurance, repairs, and maintenance. Taking TheBus instead and purchasing monthly bus passes from Outrigger, that person would probably save well over $1,000 a year. What would you do with an extra $1,000? That’s why Outrigger would like to encourage employees to ride TheBus, protect the environment, reduce traffic congestion … and save some money! Starting in September, Outrigger employees in Waikiki will be able to purchase monthly bus passes at work with pre-tax dollars. This reduces taxable income (not total income), so employees can actually save even more money because their state and federal income taxes will be lower! (The amount saved depends on each person’s tax bracket, but it should come to over a hundred dollars a year for most people.) Once enrolled in the program, employees will be able to pick up their bus passes at their respective hotel Housekeeping departments, or for those in Company Services, you may pick them up at the Human Resources Service Center.

Introducing the New Pre-Tax Monthly Bus PassContinued from page 1

So, if you are tired of fighting traffic as you drive to work, tired of searching for a parking space, and tired of paying Waikiki parking rates, think about TheBus!
