President’s Message
Gratitude is the rst order of business and I could not be-
stow my thanks upon a greater group of people. I am truly
blessed and encouraged by my fellow garden club mem-
bers and I would like to take a moment to oer praise. Thank
you District I for the terric installation held in Odessa, Texas.
The Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. has provided me with lifelong
friends who stand by me and continually oer encourage-
ment. Special thanks goes out to Keith, Veta, Jean, Lyda,
Irene, Nancy, Jane, Shirley, Bonnie, Sharron, Dorothy, Pat,
Debbie, Kermit GC, Judges Advance GC, Southwest Amarillo
GC, Desert Sands GC, and all those who attended. I am hon-
ored to be a part of the Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. and promise
to do my best to lead us through the next two years of ser-
vice. I sincerely appreciate each and every member.
This year’s National theme is Plant America, so to coordinate
I chose, Plant America, “Sowing Seeds the Texas Way” for Texas. We
not only sow seeds and plant, we teach members of our clubs, and help our communities
by planting in public places, city gardens, nursing homes, and hospitals. Another way we
sow our seeds is by teaching the youth gardening skills and provide a foundation for them
to learn how to care for our earth. They truly are our future, and we can make a dierence by
leading them in the right direction. We have to open new avenues within the public forum,
bringing discussions to the forefront that keep our earth growing, provide clean air and
healthy food, and ensure the upkeep of our world.
As youth is one of our primary focuses, my special State Award for Youth will be the Eagle.
Have you ever thought about the Eagle? He soars around the earth, keeping watch over us.
He is vigilant, constant, and a true beauty of nature. No matter how far he goes he always
returns to his nest. I feel the eagle is symbolic of our true purpose. We teach children in order
for them to learn the value of the soil and the life that planting creates, and we hope they will
carry these lessons with them always.
With these goals in mind, Linda Jean Brown is working on a program coloring contest using
the Eagle to draw and color for grade school children. There will be prizes for the winners.
I will be sponsoring this activity. Please think about your elementary schools and help us
promote this program to the youth.
In addition to our youth programs, I feel another main goal should be tackling the problems
that plague our struggling districts and clubs. We need to identify causes that lead to de-
creasing membership. It is essential that we nd ways to assist them in growing and gaining
members. Successful clubs need to share their strategies for growing their membership. We
need to unite and work together; for instance, call a struggling club and ask what you can
do to help, aid neighboring clubs with projects, or educate clubs on steps to implement suc-
cessful strategies.
One such project that you may want to help with is our income-generating project for TGC:
gardening aprons (see page 6). The orders are already coming in and I will be embroidering
a lot. All proceeds go to TGC. If this isn’t something that interests you or your club, then you
might want to consider contributing to one of our other projects. There is never too small a
donation – any amount is appreciated.

National Garden Clubs, Inc.
...it seems inevitable that I would be involved in an organiza-
tion with horticulture and design focuses. I grew up on a farm
that raised and shipped vegetable plants, and on that farm
was my grandmother’s !orist shop. So horticulture and !oral
design have been a part of my life since day one.
The changing world around us will continue to be a chal-
lenge for our organization – just as it is for all volunteer or-
ganizations. People say that they can get all the gardening
information they need from the Internet. They can Google
how to prune a rose bush or how to make a !oral centerpiece
for their dining room table. But nothing beats the hands-on
experience of actually doing either task.
Garden club meetings, workshops and projects give you the
hands-on experience with people who have done it before.
The Internet cannot do that for you. I haven’t seen many
computers out planting beds at the neighborhood entrance sign or planting petunias in the
barrels on the main street in town. In these communities - garden clubs know the impor-
tance of working with youth for the future of gardening, conservation and the environment.
I truly believe that the service to our communities that our garden clubs give assures our
future. That belief is the basis for the theme and projects of the administration: Plant America.
Gardening will be at the center of every facet of this administration from its theme to its
projects. [This is an excerpt. Ms. Hargroves’ very interesting full message can be read at www.gardenclub.org/about-us]
Another way to participate would be to increase your own knowledge of gardening. We have
some great schools that provide our members with valuable knowledge. They welcome our
programs and we need to support them. I encourage each club to nd one of interest. Who
knows what we might learn and how we might help others with that information.
Personally, I hope to go to as many of them as I can in the next two years. If you don’t want
to attend a school, then nd another way to contribute your special skills. Together we can
make a dierence . Whether you like horticulture, gardening, the environment, or working
with youth, our schools oer a way for you to learn more. Participate and share your talents.
Everyone has one and they are all dierent. United we stand, divided we fall.
See you in Killeen in October. Come join the fun! Betty Edwards

“Plant America”
Summer 2017 5
South Central Region
We have had interesting spring weather in all four states of
the South Central Region, from heavy rain to hail, wind and
dipping temperatures. During the SCR Convention in Albu-
querque, New Mexico we boarded a bus to go on our tour
to the Bandelier National Park, and, much to our surprise, it
began snowing! The view was a winter wonderland and de-
nitely made the trip more memorable.
“Magnicent Mariposa” was the title of the 84th Annual
South Central Region Convention. And magnicent it was! I
want to say a special thank you to the members of District I,
New Mexico Garden Clubs for hosting us this year.
We now transition into a new term with new o#cers, chair-
men and theme. With unity of purpose in mind, I have adopt-
ed the same theme as National Garden Clubs, for the 2017-2019 term of “Plant America” with a
focus on gardens and gardening. This theme can cover any and every aspect of gardening,
horticulture, water issues, garden design and community service. These are the activities
that we as garden club members, currently do. To make it even better, NGC will have a Plant
America Grant Program that garden clubs can apply for to provide nancial assistance with
our new gardens and projects. My Regional Director’s Project is “Beautifying Our Communities”, and
during the second year of the term I will be awarding a club in the region a high quality
marker with its name proudly posted where their garden project is located. In addition, four
$100 awards will be given (one for each state). Alternate Director, Shirley Tetreault will be
serving as SCR Chairman of the Director’s Project and will be announcing the criteria for this
award. Not only am I excited about the “Plant America” theme, I’m excited and looking forward
to working with the members of our four states. Many of you have a wealth of experience
and expertise in various areas and will be sharing this information with us in our quarterly
newsletter The Communicator which comes to you electronically. Our new editorial team is
Suzy Andrego and Pam Grotts and they welcome your submissions. Send your information
and articles to [email protected]. Due dates are March 1, June 1, September 1
and December 1, and publish dates are March 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15.
Watch for our new website due to be completed by the fall. It will be re-designed with more
information and tabs that will be much easier to navigate. Most importantly it will be se-
cured and a password and user name will be required to access member only pages. Our
Website Manager, Kathy Cox has a great vision for our website and would love input from
any of our generation X members. Not only will this better serve our members, we are hop-
ing to appeal to and attract new membership.
Our 85th Annual SCR Convention will be hosted by Texas in the great city of Houston on
April 27-28, 2018. We have an exciting term ahead of us with many things to look forward
to. The week of May 16, 2018 brings the NGC annual convention in Richmond, Virginia. I look
forward to reporting the convention highlights.
In closing ... always be true to yourself and your passion and most importantly have FUN!

SCR Director’s Project - 2017-2019
“Beautifying Our Communities” – Isabel Olsen has selected a project that emphasizes the regions
theme of “Plant America.” For many years our local garden clubs have shown a presence in
their community by sharing the joy of gardening when they plant, and maintain gardens in
various public locations, one of the most rewarding aspects of being a garden club member.
For the two year term, NGC will have a Plant America Grant Program for Community Projects.
This will provide nancial support to the participating clubs to oset the cost of the plants
and materials of their project. Now is the time for your club members to decide the kind of
project they would like to participate in. Plant a tree, edible garden or container garden at
schools or public locations, churches, cemeteries, hospitals, libraries, parks, adult centers,
assisted living or retirement homes, downtown or at an art museum.
Along with applying for a grant from NGC, you can submit an application (in the second
year of the administration) for the Regional Director’s Project Award and receive from Isabel
a high quality marker with your garden club name proudly posted where your project is
located. And in addition, four $100 awards will be given (one for each state). Shirley Tet-
reault will be serving as SCR Chairman of the Director’s Project “Beautifying Our Communities.”
The deadline for states to send their application to Shirley will be December 1, 2018. Send
to [email protected] or 12404 Apache Place NE Albuquerque, 87112. You can con-
tact me at (505)294-4331. I will post the criteria of the application in “The Communicator” and
on the SCR website.

Change is in the Wind
TGC Fall Convention in Killeen
We may have more than a few gray hairs, but that doesn’t mean we have forgotten how to have fun!
Join District V as we host the 86th TGC Fall Convention in Killeen, October 17-19,
2017 at the Courtyard Marriott. We selected “Change is in the Wind” as our theme
because we might have a hint of the season change at convention time; this conven-
tion will also disclose some new policies TGC is considering; and lastly, looking to the
future, District V is using this convention as a training platform for our future conven-
tion planners, pairing seasoned members with new, as we planned. While planning,
the word “FUN” kept creeping into the discussion, so fun is what we will have. First
we must attend to business, so if you are a member of the Trustees, Finance, and
Scholarship committees plan to be ready for work on Tuesday. The Trustees will meet
in the morning, with a lunch break for a “Chit Chat Luncheon” allowing time to visit
with friends. For those not involved in meetings you are welcome to lunch with us
or you may elect to freelance and visit our mall across the street or lunch elsewhere.
Finance and Scholarship will meet in the afternoon. Late afternoon you are invited to
a wreath workshop at no charge, sponsored by the McGregor Garden Club and our
Co-chairman, Charlotte Weiss. Dinner will be the beautiful Design Banquet.
You room rate of $105 for king or double includes a full bu et breakfast daily exclu-
sive to our convention. Wednesday we will have the Executive Board meeting in the
morning. Lunch will nd the dining room “a buzz” with third generation beekeeper,
Clint Walker III, telling us all “about the birds and the bees and the ! owers and the
trees”. Not only is Walker Honey found on every super market shelf in the area, they
have a magni cent tasting room for their renowned honey mead. His talk will cover
a wide range of the bee keeper’s world. The Board of Directors will convene in the
afternoon but will adjourn in time for “The Magic of Edible Flowers as a Garnish”.
Professional magician, Trixie Bond, will entertain you with her non-stop dialogue, an
occasional sleight of hand, and a beautiful culinary display with tasting afterwards.
We are still not done for the night is young. Put on your western duds for an evening
of entertainment with instruction on line dancing. Our DJ promises a play list that
will be easy on our tired knees. There is nothing like toe tapping, hand clapping, and
laughter to round out a day. Canes are allowed on the dance ! oor. Don’t be shy!
We don’t plan to slow down for our last day. After breakfast we gather for our formal
Opening Ceremony and General Assembly. If you are a one-day attendee this is the
one you want to make. At lunch we honor Carol Moore as our Garden Club Member
of the Year then hear a program on grape growing and wine making. Penny Adams
of Wedding Oak Winery in San Saba will whet our appetites to grow our own grapes
and create our own vintage. We may have to reconvene brie! y to nish Assembly
business but will adjourn in plenty of time to don our nery for High Tea honoring
our TGC President, Betty Edwards. Hats are encouraged but not required. Our nal
event of the convention will be Thursday dinner. We have arranged to have a local
gospel choir perform some of your favorite hymns. Make yourself comfortable for
the lifting of your spirit in song. What better way to close a convention.
