Experimental Validation of an Unmanned Single Rotor Helicopter with 4 Rotor

Blades

Nobumasa Sekishita

Associate Professor of Department of Mechanical Engineering

Kanoshita Laboratory, Wind Tunnel Laboratoty

Toyohashi University of Technology, Japan

Unmanned aerial vehicles, UAV, including

multicopters are used in the various kinds of fields.

The problems of their high payload and long flight

time increase with practical application. These

specifications, especially the payload and the flight

time of single rotor helicopters with 4 rotor blades

are better than of multicopters. We developed an

unmanned single rotor helicopter with a 4 blades

rotor head. Its selling point of the helicopter with

main rotor blades of 1.8m in diameter are high

payload (max. 10kgf), long flight time (max.

100min by a piston engine), high maneuver flight, low vibration which is the good merit of getting clearer

aerial photos. The structure of the present rotor head developed in our laboratory is gimbal mechanics

which is 2sets with each 2 blades don’t conflict and independently move at the center point of the rotor

shaft for realizing high maneuver and low vibration flight. Ground testing, wind tunnel experiments, flight

testing were conducted for performance evaluations. As the results of the ground testing by using a load

cell, the vibration fluctuation of the helicopter with our 4 blades rotor head was 1/4 times smaller as

large as with 2 blades rotor head. The flow phenomena around the main rotor blades were observed in

a wind tunnel. Since unmanned helicopter with another ready-made 4 blades rotor head can’t take a

sharp turn, the maneuverability of our helicopter with the present 4 blades rotor head was validated by

the actual flight testing. The results of these testing show that our helicopter has high performance as

industrial use UAV. Now, an unmanned 4 blades helicopter with new concepts for industrial use is

designed. Moreover, we would like to develop a micro UAV and an airship for very long fight in the near

future.

Keywords: UAV, drone, helicopter, 4 rotor blades, rotor head, aerial photo

The Role of Quality Function Deployment Method in Product Development

I Made Londen Batan

Professor of Department of Mechanical Engineering

Product Design and Development Laboratory

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya, Indonesia

Product development is intended to develop an existing product, so that customer satisfaction will be

increased and even products are met thoroughly. In product development, external factors such as:

customer, market, and community / industry needs are very important role, because product is designed

to meet market demand. Nevertheless, there is a possibility of innovation and new creativity from the

designers on their own internal needs, as internal factor such as: tasks, documents, expectations, desires,

and designer ideas also affect on product development. This paper will describe the role of the Quality

Function Deployment (QFD) method for product development that can meet the quality and target,

market competitiveness, and also meet a customer satisfaction. Besides, it is also explained how the

product is developed by involving the customer needs into product development. As an example of the

application of this product development method, this paper describes a development of tricycles to

restore the movement of the stiff patient's foot due to a stroke. Bicycle is developed based on the needs

or expectations of patients, obtained from the results of interviews with stroke patients. Interview result

is a qualitative input which is requirement or desire of costumer in process of bicycle development. The

input is translated into a quantitative parameter that can be targeted in a house of quality (HoQ). The

target is transformed into design features, which should be completed on the bike. With the fulfillment

of these needs, bicycle is expected to benefit the patient, as a tool of physical therapy for post-stroke

patients.

Keywords: product development, QFD, quality, target, competitiveness, market, customer satisfaction

Cable-driven Parallel Robots and Industrial Applications

Stéphane Caro

CNRS Full time researcher

Robotics, Laboratoire des Sciences du Numérique de Nantes (LS2N)

Ecole Centrale de Nantes, France

Cable-Driven Parallel Robots (CDPRs) form a particular class of parallel robots whose moving platform is

connected to a fixed base frame by cables. The connection points between the cables and the base frame

will be referred to as exit points. The cables are coiled on motorized winches. Passive pulleys may guide

the cables from the winches to the exit points. A central control system coordinates the motors actuating

the winches. Thereby, the pose and the motion of the moving platform are controlled by modifying the

cable lengths. CDPRs have several advantages such as a relatively low mass of moving parts, a potentially

very large workspace due to size scalability, and reconfiguration capabilities. Therefore, they can be used

in several applications, e.g. heavy payload handling and airplane painting, cargo handling, warehouse

applications, large-scale assembly and handling operations, and fast pick-and-place operations. Other

possible applications include the broadcasting of sporting events, haptic devices, support structures for

giant telescopes, and search and rescue deployable platforms. This keynote will deal with the design,

modeling, workspace analysis and control of CDPRs. A focus will be put on the development of CDPRs in

Nantes and their potential industrial applications.
